CHAPTER 52: THE DARK SIDE OF THE TOWN PART 1
The three of us hurried back to the inn and met up with Kanade and Tanya.
As for the current moment, we were in our room and in the middle of planning what exactly it was that we wanted to do in the near future.
[Nyaahh…… I can’t forgive such a thing! Not after what you said that happened!]
[Yes, I don’t like that guy at all. He sounds like a whole lot of trouble. And he deserves a good beating for being the way he is!]
When the two of them heard the story of what happened to us this morning, Kanade and Tanya were as indignant as they were about Edgar.
I guess it was an apparent sign of just how much they cared for both Sora and Luna, way more than they would let on.
At a time like this, I’m glad to see their reaction being the way it is. It was really reassuring.
It felt like a steady stream of trust was building up between the five of us every single day.
[I went ahead and asked around town. And I heard from the townspeople that Edgar’s, the Lord’s son, insolent behavior has been going on for quite some time now. About once a month or so he goes into town and takes back with him a randomly selected woman from the streets…… and then he does a whole manner of unspeakable things to them.]
Before returning to the inn to discuss our plans for the future, we first asked the people of the city about Edgar and his people.
We heard a lot of stories about the bad impression they had of Edgar and how we had helped the people of the town with what we did this morning.

Muttering that under her nose, Kanade’s face turned beet red for some reason.
[…… Hoo? What’s this? What are you acting all restless for, Kanade? Are you perhaps imagining something really lewd?]

[…… Yeah. But still, judging from what we have heard so far, that Edgar sounds like one hell of an unpleasant guy to be around.]
Yes, if I had to summarize him in one sentence, it would surely be “The enemy of all women”.
[But here’s another thing I’ve heard…… If you get “selected” by him, you cannot actually refuse or oppose him, and I’ve heard that those who disobey him are then put to jail under the charge of plotting to commit or committing treason or some other far-fetched charge like that. Which is of course a bunch of utter bullcrap. But needless to say, if we had been caught by him and his guards today, we would have surely suffered the same kind of fate.]
We were also told that some people even chose to abandon the city and flee from it after being targeted by Edgar and his cronies.
[That’s just terrible……]
[For a despicable man like that to actually be the son of the Lord of this town…… This is the classic example of what happens when you actually end up putting way too much power in the hands of someone who does not deserve to wield it in the first place.]
[Yeah. And the greatest problem here right now is that we are being targeted by a fool with way too much power at his disposal like that.]
[This Edgar guy…… I have only met him once, but he seemed to have quite the vindictive personality to him.]
[Not to mention that he was also threatening his guards to beat them and humiliate them in public if they were to refuse to do what he wanted them to do.]
Yes, it was very unlikely that this whole incident was going to be a one-time occurance and that nothing bad would come out of it in the near future.
[I mean, I have been wondering……]
Tanya raises her voice all of a sudden.
[What is the Lord’s take on this entire situation? I mean, his son just goes around town doing whatever the hell he pleases, and he just leaves it like that? Without actually doing anything about it?]
Yes, that is one more point of concern that I wanted to bring to our attention here……
[Apparently, the Lord of this town loves his only son very much. So not only is he absolving him of all of his crimes and transgressions, but he also covers up and cleans up after all of his crimes.]

[It seems that the people of the city have petitioned or appealed directly to the Knights Order as well. A Lord of the town is not a King, but only one who is entrusted with a part of his reign by the state. If he is judged to be not capable to performing his duties in the name of the King properly, he should be immediately dismissed from his position…….]
The Knights Order has conducted several audits of the Lord in the past. But in each case they concluded that there was no evidence of misconduct or misuse of power. I heard that their ability to destroy any evidence and silence all witnesses is also quite impressive.
[And to top it all off, there is also a certain rumor circulating about town: that the Lord is not only defending his son and protecting him from being punished, but that he is also enjoying the “prey” that his son is bringing back with him to their mansion.

Hearing all that, Tanya seemed to be visibly stunned.
[…… Alright, then. I guess I am going to go now and burn the mansion of this Lord to cinders. Or maybe I won’t even leave anything behind, just to be on the safe side.]
All of a sudden, she uttered something completely outrageous with a completely straight face.
[Hey, what!? N-No! Wait, wait, wait, wait!!! Wait just a moment!]
[Hey!? What gives!? Why are you stopping me!?]
[Please, just don’t do anything too rash! If you were to do that, then we would really get charged with treason! And that’s the last thing I want to happen to us!]
[Then what to you suggest that we do? If this continues, Sora and Luna are going to get taken away from us and made into nothing more but playthings for that stupid Lord and his stupid son!]
[Of course, I won’t let that happen!]

[I will protect Sora and Luna no matter what. And of course, I will also protect you both, Tanya and Kanade. I will never allow for anything bad to happen to you.]

[I promise you that. And I promise you that I won’t let anyone touch you or hurt you in any sort of way. And if someone even tries to lay their hands on you, then I will make sure that they are going to absolutely regret it.]
