Beast Tamer Who Got Kicked Out From the Hero’s Party Chapter 55 Part 1

CHAPTER 55: THE CLEAN UP PART 1

Gilet Stregar was growing increasingly more impatient.

It happened while he was performing his usual knightly duties, like he would always do.

He noticed that there was a certain rumor circulating around the young knights all of a sudden.

「It seems that there is evidence of corruption between the Knights Order and the Lord that recently emerged somewhere around town.」

Gilet right away took action and chastised the young knights for being so gullible and spreading around some silly, unconfirmed rumors like that.

But inwardly, he has broken into a cold sweat unlike ever before.

Because the connection between the Knights Order and the Lord, as well as the corruption in the Order’s ranks was an undoubted fact.

More than half of the knights, including Gilet himself, were involved in corruption, as well as plethora of other crimes, big or small.

What if that rumor turned out to be true?

What if the actual evidence was in the hands of the members of some group who have been wronged by the Knights before? Or someone who has been involved in their illegal activities?

The longer Gilet was thinking about it, the more he was coming to a conclusion that he could not simply leave that matter be.

There was too much at stake for him here. Even if it was a mere rumor, he had no choice but to treat it as something completely opposite.

After all, where there is smoke, there is undoubtedly fire.

「Tch…… This is becoming even more of a pain in the ass than I had originally thought.」

The place where the evidence was said to be located…… Gilet clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction while besieging a lone warehouse on the outskirts of town.

Of course, neither the Lord himself nor his son Edgar knew about this case for the time being.

This was all because of the gag order that Gilet himself had issued.

The Lord might have been the way he was, but he was cautious in nature.

He would never do anything that would actually leave any lead that would connect him to any sort of illegal operations or downright crimes committed around the city.

So, what would happen if such a Lord found out about this completely out of the blue?

Without a shred of a doubt, he would call it a blunder on the Order’s side of things. And he would not be happy about it.

Gilet and the other Knights who happened to enjoy the Lord’s protection until now, they would no longer get to exercise that right. Because if there was one thing that the Lord hated the most, it was loose ends.

They wouldn’t be abandoned or thrown to the wolves right away, but……

At the worst possible outcome, there could be a purge in the near future to silence all those who knew something, and to make an example out of them for all others to see.

So, if Gilet was to do something about this situation, he had to move quickly, but also quietly at the same time.

「Those guys…… They have been weirdly quiet about this this time around.」

The only thing that could be tricky to deal with here was the matter of what a bunch of young knights and their de facto leader, and the Knights Order’s Second-In-Command, Stella, were up to.

As for Stella and the ones she directly commanded, they happened to be a small bunch of knights who were yet to dip their fingers in any sort of illegal activity or crime.

Gilet once tried to ask her about it in a casual manner, as to sort of test the waters here, but the only thing that he managed to obtain……

「Captain, I sincerely hope that in the future you are going to refrain from making that kind of jokes. Because they are not even remotely funny.」

…… Was a blank stare filled with disdain and contempt.

Although he managed to somehow end the conversation on a lighthearted note, saying that it was only a joke and that she shouldn’t take it all that seriously……

But, the other members of that little clique reacted in a very similar way and refused to join the main Knights group, the one who was benefitting so much from accepting the Lord’s bribes and supporting his illegal activities.

They are a stuck-up and foolish bunch. That’s what Gilet thought at the time.

They really believe in such things as ‘Justice’ and ‘Righteousness’ in today’s day and age.

There is no such thing as ‘Justice’ in this world. At least not today.

They blindly believed that they were doing the right thing and trying to be the great and ideal knights that they imagined inside of their heads.

It was actually a very wonderful complacency.

Because in this current world, nothing can be possibly fulfilled by such lofty ideals alone.

Ideals won’t raise your paycheck, and if you make a mistake of any kind, people will shout out at you and denounce you where you stand, without even a moment of thinking or consideration for your poor circumstances.

There is no need for any kind of ‘Justice’ or ‘Righteousness’ in the current Knights Order.

There is no such thing as ‘Justice’ in this world in the first place.

In the past, Gilet himself also tried to deal with people in a sincere and just manner.

But the people just repeated their selfish and self-serving actions, not even considering others around them, only seeing as far as the tip of their own noses……

Eventually, the passion he had in his chest for his work all but disappeared, leaving him vastly disappointed and discouraged.

And then…… Gilet decided to abandon any notion of ‘Justice’ and follow it as a blind faith and acted purely for the sake of his own desires and needs.

「The sooner they realize the reality of things, the better.」

The people Gilet was currently referring to, that is Stella and those under her direct command, were currently not here, since it was decided that it would be a bad idea to tag them along. This was basically a cover-up operation so that they could clean up any evidence of their wrongdoings, and they did not need Stella’s group to know about this at all.

That much was pretty obvious to everyone involved.

In case that the evidence of their wrongdoings actually DID exist and was inside of that warehouse……

What would have happened if Stella’s group was to get their hands on it?

His head was starting to hurt really bad just from him trying to imagine that exact scenario.

Hence, none of those people were brought along for this operation and were left behind in the Knights Order’s branch office.

All knights who were accompanying Gilet tonight were the ones who accepted bribes and had deep connections to the corruption going on behind the scenes in this city.

This also meant that the ones involved in this cover-up operation were the people who Gilet knew that he could trust..

Of course, if they did that completely out in the open, Stella and the other non-corrupt knights would realize that something was wrong and they could start sniffing about.
