CHAPTER 59 PART 2

「No matter how big or small, every type of living being in this world possesses at least some traces of Magic Power inside of them. And this is only an assumption on our part, but wouldn’t the hostages be gathered in one place, just for convenience’s sake? I mean, it should be really inefficient to keep a huge group of people locked up all over the place. So, by using this spell and examining various types of Magic Energy reactions here……」

「We will be able to know where exactly the hostages are being imprisoned.」

「Yes, that’s right. …… I was just about to say that. You stole my line there, Rein!」

After saying that, Luna pouted her cheeks a little bit, sulking like a little child.

Maybe I shouldn’t have interjected into her explanation since Luna was clearly so excited to lay it all to me herself.

「I’m sorry. I’ll try to be more careful and considerate next time.」

「…… You really mean it? But now that you’ve said it, you can’t take it back! You have to make sure to let me finish when I’m explaining something, is that clear?」

「So….. What are the results of the search?」

「Hmm, yes, let’s see……」

Luna murmured while furrowing her brow.

Could it be that there was actually no response at all……?

But that would mean that the people who were taken here before were no longer inside of the mansion itself. And that would mean that they were either transported out of the mansion and relocated somewhere else, or that they were already……

For a moment, I expected the worst to happen.

「…… There! There are numerous magic power reactions in the basement. There’s a high probability that those are the people who were taken away from the city!」

「Really? Are you sure? Were you really able to find them?」

「Why do you sound like that, Rein? Were you perhaps thinking something weird inside of your head just now?」

Apparently, Sora had the same thought as myself.

She seemed to be so relieved that she even let out her breath that she’s been holding in all this time…… and then proceeded to chew up on Luna for being loud once again.

However, even though Sora was on her case, Luna’s brow was still frowned, as if there was something that was worrying her.

「Hmm, hmm, hmm.」

「What’s wrong, Luna? Is there something bothering you?」

「No, it’s nothing, it’s just that…… There was another Magic Power reaction coming from the basement.」

「Could it be the Lord…… Or even worse, his son?」

「No, the amount of magic power I’m detecting is far too great to belong to either of those people. Or to be more specific, this amount of Magic Power is something that no human could even dream of possessing. It’s a tremendous amount of raw Magic Power, comparable to that of our own.」

「Then, does that mean……」

Could it be that…… Someone from the Ultimate Species is being imprisoned here as well?

「Where is that reading coming from?」

「Considering both the distance and direction, I’d say that it’s coming from the third floor of the building, to the east.」

「Rein, what do you want to do? Are you perhaps going to……」

「Yes, that’s right.」

I think about it really quickly.

Somewhere out there in this building, there is a member of the Ultimate Species, or a spellcaster of comparable strength.

Are they really someone who would be hostile to us?

Or are they perhaps another victim of the Lord’s misuse of power, just like the people who were taken away and imprisoned here?

We have no information to work with at all, so there is no way for me to be able to make a surefire decision.

So, let’s think about it from another angle for the time being.

I don’t know if that someone is going to be a friend or a foe, but there’s no doubt that they are someone with powerful Magic Power.

Leaving someone like that unattended and to their own devices would be a bad move, no matter how you look at it.

If it’s someone who would be friendly to us, then there would be no problem at all.

However, if they are our enemy, if we somehow manage to take that person out of the picture, we might be able to strike a powerful blow to our enemies.

So no matter what, we at least need to make sure with who we are dealing with here.

「…… Alright. Let’s do it like this: Sora and Luna. Can I leave the rescue of the imprisoned hostages to the two of you for the time being?」

「Yes, that’s no problem for us. Sora and Luna can also use Teleportation Magic, so we can get the people who were imprisoned here away to safety in an instant.」

「But what about you, Rein?」

「’I’m going to go check for the source of that other Magic Power reaction. We can’t just leave it alone and do nothing about it.」

「No way…… But that’s dangerous! You don’t even know who or what it is that you are going to be dealing with, right? The amount of Magic Power of that someone rivals that of Sora and Luna…… If they turn out to be hostile towards you, you are going to be in grave danger!」

「I’m sorry, but I must disagree with you on that idea as well. What do you think this is? There is no familiar out there in the world that is going to just take the nice and easy approach while willingly sending its Master in the middle of danger! You should really leave that other signal to us!」

「…… Thank you, you two. For worrying about me so much.」

「Ahh.」

「Fuh.」

In response to their feelings, I gently stroked their heads.

At the same time, their cheeks were stained crimson.

「But, even if I were to go with you two, I cannot command such an amazing magic that would let me get the imprisoned people to safety. I will need to rely on your magic for that.」

「But……」

「I promise you that I won’t do anything rash or unreasonable. I’m just going to check out what’s going on. That’s all.」

「…… Really? You promise that you REALLY won’t do anything unreasonable?」

「Yes, I promise.」

「「……………」」

Sora and Luna looked at me for a long moment, and then……

After a long moment, they looked as if they had given up on something and just let out two long and deep sighs.

「Goodness gracious. Ours is certainly a stubborn Master, wouldn’t you say, sister dearest? To trouble us so much like that…… When it comes to Masters and Familiars, there is such a thing as the division of labor, you know? But then again…… You do this just so that you can keep us out of the harm’s way, so it’s not like we can really complain here.」

「Yes, I guess that this type of behavior is typical for Rein……」

「That is also the reason why we know that we can absolutely trust you, Rein.」

「We know that we might have already said that, but allow us to reiterate: please, no matter what happens, make sure that you won’t do anything rash or unreasonable.」

「If you happen to break that promise, you will have to pat our heads one hundred times each! So be sure to watch out! You got that?」

「Yes, I know. I’m not going to betray that trust of yours.」

In order to reassure the two of them, I flashed them a bright smile.

I then went in the other direction from the two of them and climbed up the flight of stairs.

Before long I arrived at the third floor of the mansion.

I moved towards its eastern wing, getting closer and closer to the source of that other powerful Magic Power reaction.

「This area…… Is it being used as a warehouse of some sort?」

Not knowing where exactly to look, I started by checking the different rooms one by one.

There were many rooms here where things were being stored away or placed in a total disorder.

Thinking about it now, this might have been the area where the evidence of the Lord and his son’s wrongdoings might have been stored away. I think that Stella and her people would want to see this with their own eyes.

I memorized the exact location of some of those rooms, so that I could pinpoint the knights towards them later..

「This is the last one……」

While I was going from one room to the next……

Before long, I arrived at the room at the far end of the third floor. There was nothing else here beside that room.

It had probably been a normal room, just like the other ones.

However, there were signs that this particular room was renovated.

The door was framed with an iron grate to make it possible to see what was going on inside of the room without actually coming inside.

The entrance was locked with a sturdy lock, as if whoever was imprisoned there was not allowed to go in or go out of there.

Yes…… this felt more like a prison cell rather than a normal room.

I carefully approached that room, as to not make even the slightest noise.

Gently, I peeked inside of the roo through the iron bars.

「……………」

There was a girl laying all slumped on the flimsy bedding on the floor, looking all limp and pretty much lifeless.

The girl had long, pointy ears, making her look just like a fox.

That, and she also had three long and fluffy tails growing out of her lower back.

There was no doubt about it.

She was actually the being known as the God of All Beasts……

She was one of the most powerful of all the Ultimate Species, the God Tribe.
