CHAPTER 6: THE BANDITS

Since we already managed to collect a whole lot of those medicinal herbs on the plains, we proceeded to go back to town.

There were also many kinds of different medicinal herbs that we managed to spot while on our way.

When it comes to herb collecting, it is the kind of job the importance of which could not be underestimated.

Because if we collect many, many kinds of different herbs with different effects, we can get more rewards for our troubles.

I have only started as an Adventurer, so it’s important to take it slow and steady instead of trying to rush things.

「All right, guys! Go ahead and spread out!!」

「I’m telling you, that’s simply way too weird, nyaaaaaa!!!」

This time when I made a temporary contract with about ten wild dogs or so and used them to search around, Kanade shouted as if she couldn’t stand it anymore.

「And I keep telling you. It’s only natural for a Beast Tamer to be able to do something like this. It’s only a matter of course.」

「I think that this “Matter of course” of yours is way too ridiculous, Rein…… Nyah?」

Suddenly, Kanade looked into the distance.

Her ears twitched…… and her tail straightened up, as if she switched into an alarmed state.

「Rein, there’s some kind of commotion going on over there. I hear yelling and screaming and stuff like that.」

「Hmm, a dispute between other Adventurers……?　Or maybe……?」

I stopped and thought for a moment, and then I made a quick decision.

「Let’s go and check it out.」

「Yeah!」

For starters, I recalled the wild dogs that were collecting herbs for us, and when they placed them on the ground I canceled their temporary contracts.

「And once again, it’s simply unheard of that you can give so many animals such complex and detailed orders……」

But I guess it’s not all that surprising anymore, Kanade seemed to have murmured under her nose.

As we headed towards the place that Kanade directed us, we saw a carriage and several men surrounding it.

Inside of the carriage, there was one man who looked to be the driver.

There was also one other man beside the driver, and that person looked like a merchant..

As for the men surrounding the carriage, there were twelve of them in total.

All of them were armed and could be recognized at a first glance as some kind of bad crowd.

Yes…… they were ‘Bandits’.

「Kyahahaha! Today is not your lucky day! Even your escorts ran away in panic!」

「See? As soon as they learned that it is the ‘Jet Black Fang’ that they are dealing with here, they were in such a furry to run away that they were kicking dust behind them!」

「So, how about that, hmm? How does it feel to be betrayed by the Adventurers that you yourself hired for protection?　If you’d like, you can tell us!　Your screams will surely serve as a nice appetizer before we eat and drink tonight! Gyahahaha!!」

The men laugh vulgarly.

The merchant, surrounded by bandits, could only shudder in fear.

We watched them from behind the cover of the trees for the time being.

「‘Jet Black Fang’……? What’s with that name? Are all Bandits naming themselves in a similar manner?」

「I’ve heard of them. It’s a huge bandit group, allegedly possessing over a hundred members. They are brutal and cruel, and they do a lot of terrible things on a daily basis. I hear that they even have bounties on their heads.」

「Oh, that’s actually quite impressive. You’re a lot more informed than I thought.」

「Hehe, It’s important to be well-informed when traveling.」

「So you were able to obtain information on the road, but not food?」

Swallowing hard, Kanade’s shoulders sank down and she looked really depressed.

「Rein, we should go and help those people.」

「…… No, we can’t. I think that this situation is something that we cannot possibly handle on our own.」

The bandits look like they could kill the merchant and his men at any moment now.

We should consider that if we wanted to act here, there was not a single moment to lose.

「I think that the two of us are more than enough to take care of them.」

「Are you sure?　They’re a massive bandit gang with bounties on their heads, you know?」

「I know, but I don’t care about that at all. I just think that it’s not right to leave someone who needs help to their fate.」

「Nyahahaha♪ That’s my Master for you, indeed. I knew you’d say that.」

「Kanade, you have to protect that merchant, no matter what. I will take care of the people around the carriage.」

「Roger that~!」

「On my signal, alright? Three…… Two…… One…… NOW!」

With a loud shout, both of us jumped out from behind the tree.

「Huh!? What the hell was that!?」

The bandits reacted quickly, but there was no way that they would be any match for Kanade’s speed.

Kanade broke into a sprint right from the get go, and before the bandits could even realize what was going on, she was right in their faces.

「Unyanh!」

SMACK! SMACK!

Kanade shook her fists around, and the two men surrounding the merchant fell down on the spot.

「Rein!」

「I’m on it!」

I joined the battle and stood my ground with the surrounding bandits.

I’m going to be completely honest here.

I was worried.

Rein has a talent that defies the norm for any normal Beast Tamers, and yet, his physical abilities have been enhanced by signing a contract with the Cat Spirit Tribe.

However.

It’s doubtful that he can properly use the power he’s suddenly been given just like that.

Won’t he be swept away by that power?

Won’t he just end up destroying himself because of it?

Yes, that’s why I was worried.

Even though it was my Master’s order, wouldn’t it have been better if I had simply destroyed those bandits myself?

I couldn’t help myself but to think things like that.

Rain managed to avoid the swords and axes wielded by the bandits with plenty of time to spare.

He didn’t even let them as much as graze his skin.

He would accurately avoid the incoming attacks……

And then he would launch a painful counterattack himself.

There was the sound of bones breaking.

There was the sounds of loud screams.

The bandits would fall down one by one.

I was positively stunned.

Because it was like a bottomless pit.

I couldn’t take my eyes off of Rein as he continued to fight.

I held the area around my chest tightly, my cheeks staining with deep crimson and growing hotter and hotter.

I let out a sigh as I took down the last bandit.

「So, I guess that takes care of that, huh?」

「G-God damn it……!!」

The bandits were all lying on the ground, utterly defeated.

They were all alive, but none of them was able to stand up.

All they could do was moan and writhe in pain.

「Kanade, is everything alright on your end?」

「Y-Yeah! I’m fine.」

「Good to hear. Thank you. Because you have secured the hostages, Kanade, I was able to fight to my heart’s content and without holding back.」

「…… But I must say, you were pretty amazing out there, Rein. I know that you have a contract with me going on, but to think that you would be able to handle all of those bandits all by yourself? That’s impressive!」

「Well, I’m pretty confident in my martial arts skills alone, if nothing else. Sometimes you have to make an animal obey you by force, you know? I’ve trained my body and skills for moments like that.」

「I see, nya.」.

Kanade, for some reason, had her cheeks blushing furiously.

「Rein, you were so cool♪」

And then she said something that made me feel embarrassed for a change.
