CHAPTER 63: THE ABNORMAL STATUS INVALIDATION PART 1

At that moment I could feel a cold chill running down my spine, making me shudder all over.

「What the……?」

I stopped right there in my tracks, alerted and wary about my surroundings at all times.

It was then that —

「REIN!!!」

I could hear Kanade’s loud cry, being filled with both dread and fear.

As to why she was like that, I immediately understood why.

It was the Grim Reaper.

A Grim Reaper with a giant scythe was flying towards us through the sky.

As for who it was after…… It was me.

There was no time for me to escape.

Before I even knew it, I was already well within the Grim Reaper’s scythe’s range.

In order to try and intercept it somehow, I used the Narukami to shoot a needle the size of the palm of my hand towards the Grim Reaper.

It was a highly offensive gimmick, a projectile that was not coated with poison, but it was rather to be used as a blunt weapon.

However………the needle did not manage to pierce the Grim Reaper.

It slipped through its body as if it was some sort of phantom or apparition without much of a substance to it.

And yet, the chill that was rocking my entire body did not go away. In fact, it got even worse than before.

The Grim Reaper then rose its scythe in the air!

「Rein, nooo!!!」

It was too late.

The collision of the scythe with my body was inevitable!

Without a second thought to it, I closed my eyes and braced for impact……

「…… Hmm?」

…… But nothing ended up happening?

When I opened my eyes in fear and anxiety, I saw the Grim Reaper’s figure right in front of me.

And the scythe that the Grim Reaper swung at me had pierced my body alright.

「WHOA!?」

I couldn’t really help it but to scream out loud.

But I was not really in any particular pain, and there was no blood flowing out of my body in place where the Grim Reaper’s scythe slashed at me.

Yes, aside from piercing my body with its scythe, the Grim Reaper did not manage to do anything else to me than that……

And then, as it was, it disappeared just like a mirage of some sort.

「…… Was that perhaps a hallucination? No, it was definitely TOO real to be just an illusion. And then…… And then……」

「「「「REIN!!!!」」」」

Everyone came rushing to my side at once, looking flustered and agitated.

「A-A-Are you okay, Rein!? Just now, some sort of freakish scythe came flying right at you, and…… and then……!!!」

「Are you hurt, Rein!? Or are you in any kind of pain right now!? Hey! Say something, why don’t you……!!」

「I’m going to cast some Recovery Magic at you, just to be on the safe side! Come on, show me that wound of yours! Quick!」

「You have made a contract with me, remember!? So I’m not going to let you weasel your way out of it just like that! You’re not leaving me behind!」

It seems that everyone else was also able to see the Grim Reaper, and seeing it made them all pretty panicked and agitated. But that part was perfectly understandable.

But, does that mean that everyone else was also seeing things? Were they under the effect of the same hallucination that I was?

Or was that really not a hallucination, but the real deal?

…… Ahh, no good.

No matter how much I try to think about it, I can’t think of anything rational here to explain this phenomenon.

But, for the time being, I need to put my doubts aside and reassure the others that I was okay.

「Everyone, please relax. As you can see, I’m fine. I’m really okay.」

「Really? Are you sure……?」

「Rein, would you like to lie down for a bit? You don’t need to push yourself too much, you know……?」

「Thanks, guys, but I’m fine, really. See? Everything’s alright. See? Want some proof? Here you go.」

I then started to move my body lightly on the spot to prove my point to my worried companions.

That finally seemed to reassure them enough, and everyone looked relieved.

「But anyways, what was that thing all about……..?」

「I had a really bad feeling about it. I thought…… Well, I thought that you were going to die there, Rein……」

「Perhaps this thing…… It could have been an Instant Death Spell.」

Apparently having some sort of idea what that thing might have been, Sora said with a stern look on her face.

I guess that’s the Spirit Tribe for us.

If there was ever someone who would know more about magic than anyone else out there, it would be them for sure.

「Just as its name suggests, it is an extremely dangerous magic that can cause the target to die instantly. It’s not that much of a high grade, but even more so…….. it is classified as Super-grade magic because of its sheer effect. I didn’t expect someone from this town to be able to use such magic at all……」

「…… Hmm?　But there was no magical reaction at all, right?　And I’m sure that I have never seen such a thing before. It’s impossible to have such a thing appear from thin air without as much as a small reaction at all. It must have been some sort of Magic Item at work. Most probably.」

「Hmm, I see…… Yes, it’s certainly a possibility…… But the thing that I am even more curious about here, is how the hell did you manage to tank that thing unscathed, Rein.」

Sora looked sincerely curious at my side.

「A dud…… Could it be that the spell did not work as it was intended to?」

「No, that’s not possible. Since the spell managed to manifest a form of the Grim Reaper, this means that it was a genuine, working thing. Once manifested, the Grim Reaper will reap the life of its target without allowing any sort of resistance…… That’s the kind of magic it is.」

Kanade asked the question that was probably on everyone’s minds, but Sora quickly denied it.

The magic from whatever item it was supposed to be was apparently activated normally.

But I’m still alive.

What does that even mean?

「Since this is Rein that we are talking about here…… Do you perhaps think that it is the doing of some sort of hidden ability or something like that?」

「Now come on…… What do you think I am, really?」

「「「「A ridiculous Beast Tamer with impossibly ridiculous skills and abilities.」」」」

Not only Tanya, but Kanade and everyone else joined in on that answer, saying it all together.

Did they honestly think of me that way……?

I don’t really want a fancy title like that sticking to my name.

「Fumuh.」

In the midst of discussing that topic, Luna was the only one who remained silent, having a really thoughtful look on her face.

Does she have an idea of what it could be all about?
