Hearing the men discuss something like that so casually right in front of him, it was more than enough to make Edgar’s heart sink with fear.

Who are those people?

What are they doing here?

Just what do they want with him?

Both fear and anxiety started to slowly build up inside of Edgar, reaching critical mass.

「My dear wife…… You took her away from me.」

「You took my girlfriend away.」

「And my sister as well.」

「Wha…… What?」

「Now that you have become like this, everyone is finally going to be freed from your oppressive rule, but still…… time marches forward without stopping. There is no undoing what was done. There are a whole lot of people out there who happened to be hurt by you, one way or another.」

「We know that going through with this is not going to change anything in the grand scheme of things, but…… We couldn’t just sit down and be silent any longer.」

「And seeing how you ended up…… How about we put you out of your misery, huh?」

In the next moment, the men pulled out knives from the inside of their pockets.

With the cutting edges pointed at Edgar, they each had a dark expression on their faces, which were oddly filled with grim determination.

「N-No, stop it…… Do you even know what you are trying to do, you sick bastards!? How dare you even think of inflicting harm upon me! Someone like me…… No, stop it!」

「But no matter how many times we begged you to stop doing what you were doing, you just wouldn’t stop doing it, would you?」

「A-Alright! You got me! I-I’ll apologize! I’m sorry! I’ll even bow down my head to you or lick your boots……! So please, I beg of you……!!」

「After all the things that you have done, you still dare to have that kind of attitude……!?」

「There is just no saving this guy. He is completely lost.」

With the knives still firmly resting in their hands, the men started to slowly approach Edgar, leaning closer and closer.

Sensing the impending doom that was fast approaching him at the moment, Edgar broke into cold sweat.

He tried his best to move and escape, but his body would simply refuse to move the way it should.

The only thing that Edgar’s struggles managed to accomplish was to make the bed creak in a loud way.

In the next moment, the tip of the knife touched Edgar’s skin.

Its cutting edge would sink deeper and deeper into his body, tracing a deep red line alongside it.
「O-Ouch!? It hurts!」

Even when he was facing Rein in the mansion before, Edgar managed to avoid suffering any sort of injury himself.

But now he was being cut open by hostile men armed with long and sharp knives.

I’m scared. I’m scared. I’m scared!

Edgar shuddered from the bottom of his heart when the sudden realization of his current situation hit him.

His teeth chattered as he could clearly sense the killing intent emanating from the men combined with the physical pain that was currently being inflicted upon him.

「N-No, please! Stop it! Stop it! I beg of you, please spare me! Please, PLEASE…… I’M BEGGING YOU! Just stop! Don’t do it! Please don’t kill me! I don’t want to! I don’t want to die!!! Please……」

Without any trace of shame or dignity left in his voice, Edgar started to plead with the men, crying and wailing for them to stop hurting him and spare his life.

He rolled up his body in a vain attempt at escaping, tears streaming down his face without stopping, and pleaded for them to spare him and leave him alone.

It was a truly pathetic sight to witness.

If anyone who knew Edgar before would have seen him right now, they would have suspected that he was a completely different person altogether.

That’s just how much Edgar was backed into a corner. To the point where he would abandon his pride just so that he could have even a sliver of a chance at making out of this situation alive and in one piece.

Edgar was a man with a whole lot of pride to him, but……

Up until now, he had lived his life completely unimpeded, with no one even daring to stand up to him.

There was no way such a man could ever hope to endure the burning hatred of people that he had wronged being directed at him so up close and personal.

「Don’t! Please don’t, stop it…… I’m begging you, please don’t kill me……! I apologize, I apologize for everything that I have done, so…… So please……!!!」

「…… Boring. You are so boring it’s simply unreal.」

Seeing Edgar’s unsightly and disgraceful appearance, the burning desire for vengeance inside of the men’s hearts started to cool down.

Even though they have come here with every intention at stabbing him to death, when they were looking at him right now, they couldn’t help it but to feel utterly silly and embarrassed.

「…… Let’s just get out of here.」

「Yeah, that’s right. Someone as sorry as that is hardly worth killing.」

After saying that, the men put their knives away and left the room without waiting even a single moment.

Being left all alone, Edgar let out a breath of relief as he realized that the sudden crisis and the threat to his life was finally over.

It was also then that the realization hit him…… The realization of just how unsightly he was behaving just now.

「W-Why did I…… do that…… Why did I…… say that……?」

At this moment, the image of himself desperately begging for his life while sobbing and crying was burned deeply into Edgar’s mind.

He desperately tried to forget it, but he just couldn’t.

And as he tried to do just that, his mind rattled and crumbled.

「W-Why…… Why did I…… How could I…… I…… Ugh……!!」

Edgar groaned loudly with his head cradled tightly in his hands.

It was all he could do at the current moment.

There was nothing else he could do to protect himself.

And then……

Edgar couldn’t answer any questions properly that the Knights would have for him, and was swiftly deemed insane.

No amount of recovery magic could heal his utterly broken mind.

However, being in an insanity state did not mean that the sins of his past would be erased and forgiven.

He would be judged accordingly and sentenced as any sane person would.

Just like his father, he would be transported to the royal capital to be convicted after he was able to move properly.

As it is, Edgar would spend the rest of his life in prison, but that’s another story for another time.

The man who had been looking out the window inside of the hospital room…… Arios quietly left the scene without saying anything.

「I thought I should take care of him so that he wouldn’t talk about anything unnecessary by accident, but…… With the way he looked, I don’t think that this loser is going to be any sort of threat to me at all.」
