CHAPTER 78 PART 2

「N-No…… Not really…… Why would I……?」

「…… Fuahh. Thank goddess!」

For some reason, Natalie-san looked both relieved and ecstatic.

「S-so cute…… I want to hug you so bad…… Can I?」

「Yeah, I want to do that, too……」

「Ugh…… She’s so cute that it’s actually borderline disgusting…… In a good sense, that is.」

Seeing Nina act in such a cute way, even Kanade and Tanya started saying things that were somewhat weird and questionable.

Could it be that this is another one of Nina’s special abilities? Maybe something that she wasn’t even aware of herself?

…… Nah, there’s no way that this could be it.

「Nina-chan is still so young and so precious…… C-Could this be……!? N-No, that’s impossible, but…… I mean, if she’s so cute, then maybe…… Say, Rain-san?」

「Yes? What is it now?」

「Could it be that you actually have a thing for little and adorable children?」

「And where did that come from just now?」

To me, it felt like something just happened to break inside of Natalie-san.

「E-Ekhem. Oh my God, please excuse me. It just happened to slip out…… Let me apologize here for asking you something so strange. I really did not mean to do that.」

「Well, I mean, it’s not that big of a deal to me, but……」

Come to think of it, we did not come here so that we could talk about such weird and unimportant things.

That’s right. We have come here with a clear goal on our minds.

「By the way, Natalie-san. Were you or the Guild able to find out anything more about that Demon that appeared in the city the other day?」

It was weird that Edgar was able to transform into a powerful Demon completely out of the blue like that.

So I thought that the Guild might have some sort of a clue as to what could have possibly been the cause of that strange transformation……

「I’m really sorry…… We tried to investigate that mutter as thoroughly as possible, but I’m afraid that all of our efforts amounted to nothing.」

「Oh, I see……」

「Due to the delicate nature of the matter at hand, we are doing our best to investigate it in conjunction with the Knights Order, but it’s difficult to provide a proper investigation at this time, especially since the prime suspect, Edgar, has apparently gone insane in the hospital. And without his testimony, we might be missing the most crucial pieces of evidence.」
It was something that I have found out about only after the fact.

Apparently Edgar managed to survive being turned into a Demon, but he was branded a criminal and apparently became mentally ill because of the weight of his own trauma of the recent events combined with his own depravity.

When it comes to me, I have little to no sympathy for him. Because in my opinion, this comeuppance was somehow that he had long since coming.

However, the fact that he was apparently branded as clinically insane and unable to testify was something that was a huge shame.

Where did he manage to get that ring from?

The existence of the ring was another fact that I thoroughly reported both to the Knights Order and the Adventurers’ Guild, but even after running some investigations on their own the two organizations were unable to come up with anything.

I thought that if we were able to interrogate Edgar and force him to spill everything that he knew, we would be able to get the whole picture of this entire incident.

「However, while we might not know what was the cause of this rare incident, let me assure you that we will not allow for something like this to take place ever again. Just to be on the safe side, we have raised the alert level across the entire Guild and the places its influence can reach. That should be more than enough to make sure that any such future incidents will be nipped in the bud.」

「…… I really hope that you are right about this one.」

There was one thing that Natalie-san was absolutely right about.

It was a very rare occurrence for humanity having to deal with Demons just like we had to do a few days back.

Or at the very least, it was SUPPOSED to be a rare occurrence, but……

There is really no guarantee that the same thing won’t end up happening again. And no one was able to promise you otherwise.

We might be hit by a similar threat in the future.

At the very least, that was the lingering feeling that I had at the very back of my mind this entire time.

「But even so…… Your party has quickly grown to a considerable size, Rein-san.」

「Yeah, I guess you could say that.」

There us myself, Kanade, Tanya, Sora, Luna, and Nina.

So we have six people in total in our party.

Natalie-san was right about that, we were quite a large group at the current moment.

We should start thinking about our accommodations more seriously in the near future.

…… So why not?

I might as well ask Natalie-san about it. Maybe she’ll be able to help us.

「Natalie-san, there is something I have been meaning to ask you for a while now. Is that alright?

「Yes, certainly. What can I help you with?」

「As you can clearly see, we’ve got a good number of people in our party at the current moment, right? I’m trying to figure out a place for us all to stay, and I was wondering if there’s a better way for us to live rather than being all cramped up in a single inn room.

「Hmm…… I see.」

For a moment out there Natalie-san looked as if she was lost in her own thoughts. And then……

After a bit, she opened her mouth.

「Well then, why don’t you buy a house?」

「A house?」

「It’s a thing that larger parties staying together for a prolonged time tend to do: they buy themselves a house to use it as the base of their operations.」

「But buying a house surely is expensive……. I mean, I have some money saved up for unforeseen circumstances, but still……」

「If money is your primary concern, I think the best option would be for you to simply rent a house at first. If you have a base of operations in this city, the Guild will subsidize it and if you combine that with the rewards that you get from quests and the earlier incident, I think the resulting sum would be more than enough to allow you to rent some place for a really long time.」

Adventurer parties above a certain rank often leave the city and go away to look for a place with more challenges and better financial opportunities.

Sometimes they just end up settling in other places for good.

In order to prevent such a situation from happening, the Adventurers’ Guild seemed to have decided to offer a grant to keep promising Adventurers around.

…… Or at the very least, that was the official explanation that was offered to us.

「What do you think about that?」

Such an important decision was not something I would be able to do on my own.

I then looked at everyone else.

「House? Like, our very own?」

「Yes, we can get one, but only on condition that we make this city our main base of operations.」

「I think it’s a really good idea. I like this town and I’m looking forward to living together with Rein……」

「As for me, well…… I don’t really care if I’m with Rein or not, but I’m sure I’ll be more comfortable than at the inn. So I’m all for it.」

「I agree with Sora. I think having a base of operations would help in a lot of ways.」

「Yes. I don’t disagree with that. In fact, I really DO agree. After all, ever ruler needs a suitable castle, isn’t that right?」

I see that we have a unanimous decision.

And because of that……

「Then we are going to start looking for a house for us to use.」

「「「「OOOOHHHH……!!!!」」」」

「Oh…… ooohhh……」

Kanade, Tanya, Sora and Luna all shouted cheerfully……

As for Nina, she followed suit, looking a little embarrassed to do so.
