CHAPTER 8: JET BLACK FANG

When we had defeated all the bandits, we called out to the merchant.

「Are you alright, sir?」

「Yes, yes…… Thank you for saving me from such a dangerous situation. Thank you so much!」

The merchant seemed to finally come to his senses and bowed his head in a hurry.

「You’re not hurt, are you?」

「No, good sir. My coachman and I are perfectly fine. No need to worry about us.」

「But, wasn’t that a little bit dangerous and irresponsible to travel the roads without a proper escort?」

「No, you see, good sir, I had hired an escort, but when the odds were stacked against them, they simply ran away and left us to our fate just like that……」

「They sound like a bunch of terrible people.」

「Oh well, it doesn’t even matter anymore. What’s done, is done. But more importantly……」

The merchant said while his body shivered all over.

「Just now, didn’t those ruffians said that they belonged to the “Jet Black Fang”……? Because if that was true and they really belong to “Jet Black Fang”, we have to hurry and get out of here right away…… Ahh, how dare they. leaving us like that while saving their own skin!? I can’t believe those people……!」

「Are they really that troublesome of a bunch?」

Because of the fact that until a while ago I was exclusively traveling with the Hero’s Party, I had little to no idea about the world and its current affairs.

「’They are a bunch of cold-hearted killers and ruthless criminals, good sir. They kill and steal from anyone unfortunate enough to cross their path, and they are so violent and well-organized that no one dares to oppose them. And it seems that there are many skilled fighters amongst their ranks, for many Adventurers and soldiers alike sent by the country are getting beaten by them over and over again……」

「Hmm, I see.」

Even though it was an emergency, I still went and picked up a fight with a troublesome bunch like that.

Now, I do not regret that decision even for a second, but……

If I leave things like this, they are only going to escalate further and become even more troublesome.

One of the bandits that was spread on the ground lifted his head and laughed weakly.

「Oh, you’ve done it now, you bastards! I have memorized all of you lots’ faces! And in revenge for this, I will kill all of your loved ones, family members, friends……」

「Was that supposed to be a threat?」

「I just stated the fact that’s about to happen! Hahaha, serves you right, assholes……」

This guy doesn’t seem to be all that remorseful about what he did. Not even one bit.

I could also see that the other guys seemed to be more or less the same way.

In that case, it would only be appropriate for me to judge the other members of the ‘Jet Black Fang’, who weren’t here at the moment, to be the same type of people as those guys right here.

「Alright then, I guess we should go ahead and capture the rest of them as well.」

「「Huh?」」

The merchant opened his eyes wide in surprise.

Kanade did the same thing.

「Well, we can’t just leave dangerous people like them to just roam free and do whatever it is that they please, right? 「I mean, it’s a band of bandits that we are talking about here! And the one that has like one hundred men to its ranks, no less! Upon further questioning, we found out that the “Jet Black Fang”’s hideout was in a cave that was some distance off the main road from here.

For the time being we left the captured bandits in the merchant’s care and we headed towards the cave.

「…… Oh, there it is! It’s right there.」

We arrived at the cave, relying on Kanade’s exceptional sense of smell to guide our way.

We hid in the shade of a tree as we had done before.

There were two guards stationed at the cave’s entrance.

「Are you absolutely sure that this is the right cave?」

「Yes. Without a doubt, this is the cave that the “Jet Black Fang” uses as its main hideout. I can smell the scent of those bandits from before coming from the inside. And I can hear a lot of voices inside of that cave, so it’s unlikely that they are out somewhere at the current moment.」

「Alright, thanks.」

「What are we going to do?　Do you want to go in there like you did before? Oh, but…… But this time I’m going to stand right by your side, alright? I don’t care just how many they are in there, because I think it will be way too hard for you to handle on your own, Rein.」

「Yes, you’re absolutely right. But I’m not going to go in there completely blind.」

After all, it’s the hideout of a band of bandits who have a high bounty on their heads.

The inside is probably filled with traps.

I don’t plan on showing my face in a place like that without knowing what’s coming to get me.

「When I was young, I used to train as an Insect Tamer for a while to see if I would be able to do it. as an insect tamer for a while. So I can tame insects as well.」

「H-Huh? Huh!? HUH!? I-Is that how it works? You can really do something like that? …… No, seriously. The word ‘amazing’ is slowly starting to become more and more inappropriate to describe just how awesome you are, Rein.」

Kanade’s expression became more and more complex, as if she was surprised and dumbfounded by this sudden revelation.

「Normally, you would think it’s impossible to be able to master two professions at the same time……」

「The Insect Tamer is by no means a perfect and foolproof profession, I’ll let you know. There’s still a lot of things that it can’t do, or it has a whole lot of restrictions. But this is the best thing that can be done with normal taming alone. Okay, that should take care of all of the temporary contracts for the time being.」

First of all, I’ll have the emissary bee gather its kin around and……

Even though I was about to pick a fight with a large group of bandits, I was strangely calm.

……..Maybe it’s because Kanade is with me now.

I’m not sure if it’s just because of that alone, but Kanade’s smile makes me feel like I can do my best at all times.

「So, what are you going to do now?」

「This bee is a special specimen called the Earl Bee. It has a paralyzing venom that renders its prey immobile, allowing them to be captured and brought back to the hive where they can be eaten while still alive. It is a unique kind of bee, in more sense than one.」

「Ahh, I can already see where this is going. You’re gonna use those Earl Bees to immobilize the bandits, right?」

「Yes, that’s correct.」

The Earl Bee is so toxic that once it stings you, you won’t be able to move properly for at least half a day.

「I’ll give the bees instructions here, so Kanade, go back to the city and gather the other Adventurers and soldiers, as many as you can find. As expected, I can’t bring so many guys in on my own.」

「Leave it to me!」

She nodded her head, but then……

Kanade’s expression turned surprisingly serious.

「But be careful, okay?　I don’t think you’re going to make any mistakes since it’s you who we are talking about, Rein, but you mustn’t let your guard down, okay?」

「I know. The moment I feel that something is not right, or that I might be in danger, I will turn around and run. I promise.」

「Good.」

Kanade glanced back at me anxiously, but then…….

She finally felt relieved when I gave her a firm nod as if to say that everything will be alright.

She then jumped and disappeared beyond the veil of clouds.

「Alright. Well then,,,,,, Let’s do this!」

I then ordered the Earl Bees to move forward and begin the assault.
