「Good grief, what is the Guild thinking these days? Giving a C Rank to a mere kid? If they start doing this en masse, people will start to think that the quality of the Adventurers have started to go downhill, wouldn’t you agree?」

「*Irritate*」

Hearing the pair’s words, Kanade’s temples twitched violently while blue veins could be seen popping out all over her forehead.

…… Or not. I guess that Kanade was not the only one who got irritated by their words here.

Tanya, Sora and Luna looked equally as irritated.

Even Nina had a sullen look on her face.

「…… Want to go and deck those chumps, like, really good?」

「Alright, let’s do this! Permission granted!」

「…… Wait wait, wait! Adventurers really shouldn’t be throwing hands with one another like this!」

「…… Or rather, I guess that those guys have no idea just how amazing Rein really is!」

「How could they not know about Rein? After all the amazing things that he did just recently? Isn’t that really strange?」

「…… Maybe they just came here from somewhere else? That would certainly explain things.」

「Hey, what was that? What are you whispering about over there?」

「Ahh…… No. nothing. N-Nothing important, really.」

「By the way, could it be that you two come outside of Horizon? That you have come here only recently?」

「Why, yes, that’s right. That’s because we are traveling Adventurers, always on the lookout for new challenges while on the road.」

「Ahh, I see, nya. So that means that Nina was basically right.」

「Wait a second…… Now that I get a closer look, aren’t you a Cat Spirit Tribe, missy? And that Lady over there is a Dragon Tribe! And this child is a God Tribe!」

「Hmm, I see. Well, if you are friends with so many Ultimate Species, it’s only natural that you would be able to obtain the C Rank.」

「Hey, now that’s just rude! Rein was able to obtain the C Rank thanks to his own efforts and hard work!」

「And let me tell you, our Master is way more powerful than the two of you! Way more powerful than you could ever hope to become, actually!」

「Huh? What was that?」

Ogg let out a sullen voice at Kanade and Tanya’s sudden rebuttal.

Oh no, they really shouldn’t have done that.

I was really glad that they were willing to get angry on my behalf like that, but……

But I don’t want to fight with other Adventurers because of a silly reason like this one.

And honestly, I don’t really care if someone wants to criticize me without actually knowing the first thing about me.

「Umm…… Are you guys in the middle of doing a request, too?」

I hurriedly asked that question in hopes of averting the conversation onto some safer territory.

「Hmm? W-Well, yeah, I guess.」

「We were asked to capture the poachers and smugglers that happen to be roaming about these woods.」

「Huh?」

「Hey, hey, Rain? Isn’t that basically the same kind of request that we have been tasked with?」

「Huh? And what the hell is that even supposed to mean?」

「W-Well actually……」

It was then that I explained to the two Adventurers that apparently we happened to receive the same kind of request that they did.

「Goodness gracious, who would have thought? We are completely different parties, but we happened to accept the same request? What are the odds?」

「Does that mean that there is some double-booking in place?」

It is the usual rule of thumb that the requests that the Adventurers take on shouldn’t overlap with one another.

If more than one Adventurer would accept a single request, it would be easy to get into disputes over achieving the conditions of request and distribution of rewards…… and that system was making it easy to avoid it.

However, when it comes to defeating a monster with immense power, there are times when requests are sent to multiple parties at once……

But this case was different.

Since we’re only catching poachers and smugglers, it is the kind of request that should be manageable by a single party.

「Who was the one who gave you guys this particular request……?」

「…… Huh? That would be Natalie-san, but……」

「Ugh, so a different person, huh? Oh well, maybe the Guild just happened to make a mistake. It happens sometimes, these things.」

「Huh, I see.」

「So, you guys can just go back home.」

「…… What?」

I don’t remember ever agreeing to give up on a request, so it would be nice if those guys were not trying to come up with that on their own.

In this kind of situation, isn’t the first thing we should discuss amongst ourselves?

And yet, the way in which they thought that we would just politely back down without even saying a word was somehow pissing me off.

「I’m sorry, but we are not leaving.」

「No, sorry, but since you are going to be a bother here, why don’t you just go back home and……」

「I said. That we are not. Going to leave!」

Kanade and the others seemed to have reached the same conclusion, and they just repeated my words while the other two looked clearly baffled.

「Come on now…… You said your name was Rein? For how long have you been an Adventurer?」

「Rein has been an Adventurer for about a month or so, right?」

Kanade replied in my stead.

「What the, only a month, huh? And still you managed to reach all the way to Rank C…… Yeah, that sounds about right. You are being completely carried by your companions over here, isn’t that right?」

「No listen here. We have been Adventurers for a few years now. We are your seniors in that regard, so to speak. It’s only natural to step back for your seniors’ sake, wouldn’t you agree?」

「You can say whatever you want here, but your twisted theories won’t convince Sora and the others!」

「Why would we want to respect someone only by virtue of that someone being older than us? Or rather, since Rein managed to attain Rank C in about a month’s time, doesn’t that make him a whole lot better than you guys? Shouldn’t you just retire at this rate……?」

「Why you little……」

Sora and Luna’s rebuttal only made Ogg turn even more hostile.

It might actually be useless for me to say this right now, but I really wanted to avoid pissing those two off if I could help it.

But I can’t really blame them. After all, Sora and Luna were still hiding their wings, so they wouldn’t even think that those two were also the Ultimate Species.

The one who was the most problematic here was Luna in particular. Her personality was so confrontational that she would pick fights with people, which resulted in her getting us into trouble.

「Well then, how about we do this?」

Kreutz, who has remained relatively calm all this time, offered us an alternative.

「Regarding that particular request, we can clearly see that neither of our parties intends on letting that request go. In that case, we’ll have to compete for it.」

「You mean, first come first serve rule……?」

There was no need for us to actually get mad at his words. Because that was a pretty obvious provocation just now..

But more importantly, whatever should we do about it?

Since they are both C Rank Adventurers, they must be pretty experienced.

And considering that they are a party of only two people, they must be pretty skilled in their own right.

So it was easy to assume that even though there were only two of them, they would be more than enough to handle that particular request.

With a generous smile on his face, Ogg and Kreuz disappeared into the forest again.

「*HISS*……! Those assholes! I don’t like them! I don’t like them at all!」

「Just leave them be. The weaker the dog, the more likely it is to bark at you.」

「But still…… Well said, Rein! You have gained even more respect in my eyes in that moment!」

「Yes, that’s right. Since it’s about Rein, I thought that you would actually consider giving the request to those two in order to avoid the unnecessary conflict, but……」

「Yes, it’s great that you stood up for yourself! It was a whole lot better than having those two push you around!」

「You really did…… your very best there……」

I have such dependable friends in my party.

With them at my side, I’m not going to let those two beat us! No matter what!
