CHAPTER 97: THE PAST FATE PART 1

「Sorry for keeping you guys waiting!」

After a while, Kanade came back with Tina in tow.

「I have brought Tina with me, just as I promised I would!」

「Yes, and she certainly managed to do that.」

Even though Tina was about to step into the house of a rogue merchant, she did not seem to be all that tense about it. Not in the least.

Well, I guess it’s better that way. At least the team’s morale is high thanks to that.

It was certainly better than having everyone as tense as a drawn string.

「Yeah, I mean, since I was cooped up at home all this time, it actually feels great to be able to go out for once, you know? That way I won’t be bored to…… Well, to death. Then Kanade came up to me and said that I’m needed for something? You have no idea just how happy that made me feel! And since Master Rein did so much for me, the only thing I can really do here is to pay him back with my best efforts!」

「Thank you for that. It’s also great to see that you are so motivated, but please try to keep your voice down a little bit, alright? This is technically a stealth operation, so if we are found out, we are going to get in some real trouble.」

「Oh? …… Yeah, right! Sorry about that, sorry! I must have been even more excited than I thought I was, so I just……」

Tina said while smacking herself to the forehead in a cutesy way.

Even after her death, Tina’s been around for more than thirty years now.

But since she’s a ghost, this means that her appearance didn’t change that much at all.

So, when she made such a gesture, I looked strangely cute for some reason.

Oh well, putting that thing aside for now,

How about we get to the point already?

「The house that we would like you to infiltrate is the one on the other corner of that road…… Get it?」

「Yeah, I know. And I can already tell that the owner has way too much money and a really bad taste, to boot.」

Speaking of bad taste, maybe Tina was right about that. That might have been it here.

Because the garden in front of the house was ridden with golden statues (?) and other obscure objects like that. So yeah, that pretty much confirmed the owner’s poor taste.

But still, even for Tina, that was a pretty relentless remark.

…… Or maybe she just naturally has a foul mouth? That’s always an option.

「For the time being, we would like to go into that mansion, but we can’t find a way to know what’s going on inside of it. We were trying to scout things out with magic earlier, but it seems that they have some methods of precaution against outside interference. That is why……

「That’s when I step in to save the day, huh!?」

「Yes, that’s right…… You look awfully happy about that, huh?」

「Yeah, I mean, I cannot really go out of the house during daytime, right? So I need to be all cooped up at home. That’s why I would like to make the most use out of this outing as possible, not to mention being able to finally do something for Master Rein! That’s why I’m happy to be able to help in this way!」

「Yes, it’s nice to see that you want to help, but why are you so enthusiastic about it? Personally, I do not think that I have done anything that would earn me this level of devotion from someone else.」

「Oh, yes you did, Master. Yes you did. But I guess that’s the problem with people who are lacking in the self-awareness department, huh?」

Oh, really now? I did?

I tried to look back on my past actions, but I had no idea what it could have been that I did for Tina specifically.

We got to know Tina fairly recently, and instead of kicking her out of the house or exorcizing her on the spot we decided to allow her to live with us for the time being.

Other than that, I didn’t do anything that was even worth mentioning.

「Master Reim, could it be that you really are so dense, or just……?」

「Huh? No, I don’t think that I……」

「Yes. Yes you are dense.」

「That’s right.」

I was about to say no, but before I got to say anything, the girls all of a sudden answered for me, and in a tone that would tolerate no buts or ifs.

Kanade and Tanya just nodded their heads in agreement with Tina.

Did I, did I actually do something to them for them to think like that……?

「I have been all alone for the longest time now, right?」

「Oh, yeah……」

「And because I’m a ghost, I am basically unable to relate or interact with other people who are living their lives to the fullest. So I was forced to hide and live in seclusion. That’s how I have lived my life after life for the past thirty years. All alone, with no one to even talk to.」

「Tina……」

「But after I met Master Rein everyone else, I am no longer alone. I’m very happy and delighted about that fact. I never thought being with someone else could be so much fun…… I have realized how important it is to have that connection with other people. That’s why I’m really, really grateful to Master Rein for teaching me that.」

「I see.」

I don’t think I actually did that much, but……

Still, I’m glad if I’ve been able to heal at least some of Tina’s loneliness with our company.

「So, I am ready to do anything if it is for Master Rein! Come Hell or high water!」

「But since you are a ghost, Tina, do you really need to be afraid of both fire and water?」

「……………」

One sentence coming from Luna was more than enough to cause Tina to start sweating profusely.

「…… Luna. That was really insensitive of you, you know?」

「Muh…… Could it be that by any chance, I didn’t read the atmosphere in the room right?」

「Even if you thought you did, you actually didn’t. In fact, you were completely off the mark here.」

「Ooohhh…… Oh well, so I made a mistake! Sorry about that. I’m going to just shut up for the time being, so you can carry on with the conversation if you want.」

「Thanks, but there’s no need to be so considerate of me. It’s not like I care about stuff like that anymore or anything like that.」

Tina giggled slightly.

I guess she couldn’t even have a casual chat like this when she was all alone.

So I guess that no matter what, she was enjoying herself greatly now.

「Now then! It’s time for me to show you guys what I can really do! After all, I don’t want you to think that I am all useless or anything like that!」
