Chapter 33

Episode 26: Party Formation

Two weeks had passed since the duel with the seniors.

I no longer heard people whispering things like 『Commoner trash』 or 『Sycophant girl』 behind my back. While I thought they were finally recognizing me… it felt more like they were avoiding me so they wouldn’t upset me (sweat).

The wall between nobles and commoners feels even larger than I imagined. When I think about it that way, I can’t help but admire Lady Selen and the others even more for treating me so kindly, despite being royalty. I have a lot of respect for them.

As I was lost in thought while eating breakfast, Lady Selen spoke to me.

「Ren? You’ve stopped eating. We have class, so if you don’t hurry, we’ll be late.」

「Ah, sorry, I was just thinking about something… I’ll finish up quickly (laugh).」

「Were you thinking about the party formation? There’s a mock subjugation training coming up soon, and this week’s classes are supposed to focus on preparing for that, right?」

「Yeah, I was just thinking how nice it would be to be in the same party as you, Lady Selen (smile).」

Though I was actually thinking about something else, I gave an answer that matched Selen’s comment. Saying something like 「I respect you」 out loud would be way too embarrassing…

After finishing breakfast, I walked with Lady Selen as usual to the classroom and sat down next to her, waiting for class to start.

The teacher entered, and the lesson began.

「Today’s lesson is about party formation. In preparation for the subjugation training, you’ll need to form parties for the mock subjugation exercise. A party can’t function with just strong members. You need a balance of roles such as scouts, front-line fighters, healers, and rear-guard support. With that in mind, I’ll teach you the basics of party formation.」

Since I’d been working as a hunter, I understood this already, but I figured everyone else would learn from here.

➖➖➖➖Slaine’s Perspective➖➖➖➖

I started thinking about my ideal party formation.

I believe I’m best suited for the front line. Selen would definitely be in the rear guard. Ren, being versatile, would be perfect for watching our backs. That leaves the roles of scout and healer to fill.

In this week’s lessons, I plan to observe my classmates during the mock battles to determine who would fit in my ideal party. And I won’t let anyone else take Ren.

Even if that means I end up in a different party from Selen.

Episode 27: Party Formation II

The basic lecture on party formation begins.

「For forming parties in the S-Class, you have two options: either five groups of four members or four groups of five members. Which one do you choose?」

The teacher asks the question, but no one answers. There’s no correct answer to this question, so I thought we could all just share our opinions. Since no one spoke up, I decided to answer.

「I think four groups of five members is better. Since we are beginners in subjugation, having more members would be safer. Ideally, we would form a party with five members: one scout, two frontliners, one healer, and one rearguard.」

The teacher nodded repeatedly, then glanced around the classroom before speaking.

「Is there no one else who wants to respond besides Selen? When you form a party, there will be plenty of times when you’ll need to exchange opinions with your members.」

After hearing this, Slaine-sama answered.

「I agree with Selen. Since we don’t have much experience fighting monsters, having more members would make things safer. Also, every party should definitely have a healer. Other roles can be substituted, but there’s no replacement for healing.」

「In that case, we need to select those who can use healing magic from the class to form the parties.」

Right after Slaine-sama finished his statement, Lady Selen made a suggestion.

「Slaine has a point. Are there any other opinions? If not, we’ll take a short break. Afterward, we’ll adopt Slaine’s suggestion, and we’ll select those capable of healing from the S-Class. Then we’ll divide the appropriate members into the four parties. Is everyone okay with that? Speak up now if you disagree!」

No one voiced any objections, so we took a break.

I also thought Lady Selen’s proposal was right.

「Hey, Ren, can you use healing magic?」

「Yeah, I can. I use water magic, so I can heal!」

「That means you and I will be the first ones chosen for a party then.」

「If there are a lot of students who can heal, they’ll just select the most suitable ones, so I don’t think I’ll be one of them.」

「Because you can also use martial arts and offensive magic?」

「Yeah, I think I’m more suited for the rearguard.」

「That makes sense! In that case, there’s still a good chance we’ll be in the same party♪」

「Don’t worry! There are only two girls, so if we’re split up, it might cause some issues. We’ll end up together♪」

During the break, I chatted about things like that with Lady Selen.

When the break was over, the teacher called for those who could use healing magic.

「Alright, if you can use healing magic, stand up! I know who you are, so don’t lie!」

The teacher made it clear he knew already, probably to discourage anyone who didn’t want to take the healer role from lying. In total, eight students, including Lady Selen and me, stood up.

This means the chances of me being in the same party as Lady Selen are even higher now♪

Episode 28: Healer Selection

Eight students stood up.

Aside from Lady Selen and me, the others were as follows:

– Nigel Collins (Martial Arts & Magic)
– Novak Stockton (Magic)
– Michael Lampert (Martial Arts & Magic)
– Harry Rushford (Magic)
– Davis Carmine (Magic)
– Dominic Holmes (Martial Arts & Magic)

I specialize in Martial Arts & Magic, while Lady Selen specializes in Magic.

Simply put, selecting the four magic types would seem like the best option, but the important factor here is the ability to heal.
Thus, it was decided that we would evaluate everyone’s healing abilities.

Of course, we couldn’t deliberately injure ourselves to test this, so instead, we were going to observe a mock battle between upperclassmen in the afternoon class.
During the mock battle, we’d heal any injured participants, which would allow us to assess each individual’s capabilities.

It’s rare to get a chance to observe upperclassmen’s mock battles, so not only would it help with our healer selection, but it would also serve as a great learning opportunity for martial arts.

With that plan set, the morning classes ended a bit early.

To foster communication between the healer candidates, Lady Selen suggested we have lunch together at the central cafeteria and talk things over.

From our conversation, I learned something interesting.

Everyone wanted to be selected as a healer.
The reason was simple—thinking about their futures, being a healer would be highly advantageous.

Whether entering the military or becoming a court magician, healers were in high demand and received preferential treatment.
Being selected now would be a valuable opportunity to position oneself as a skilled healer for the future!

This conversation made me feel confident that I could opt out of being selected if it came down to healing abilities♪

After spending some productive time together, we headed toward the arena to observe the upperclassmen’s mock battle.
