「Hey, this has been on my mind for some time now but…」

As Makoto finished drinking heal potion, mana potion and stamina potion all in a row, she asked in a helpless tone as if to mask the fear she felt for a split second.

「Why do monsters like these tend to get stronger whenever they’ve been cornered?」

「Mako, it’s useless pointing out something as cliched as that.」

Mio commented against Makoto’s words. However, they were also making a very cliched move of not attacking the monster while it was powering up. Yet that was because even if they were to attack the monster now, it won’t take any damage.

「Welp, if they’re gonna go all out, enlargin’ would make their appearance ‘n impact bigger. Since their size gits bigger, they git stronger as well.」

Makoto made a careless comment. Then Hiroshi answered, his eyes focused on the situation. No one was expecting a serious response. But in a situation like this, it was normal for at least one person to give a response like that.

「Also Mako, it’s not an ideal situation for adventurers if the monsters came out at its strongest form in the start.」

「Well, with these guys, it looks like there is some risk with levelling up their power so I wasn’t going to comment on that anyways.」

These types of monsters typically level up by taking in other’s core so it wasn’t something that can be done easily. Considering their method, it was understandable that they wanted to finish this battle as fast as they could. After all, this wasn’t the same as combining mecha sneaking into the base of their nemesis separately to fight them.

「Mako, have you calmed down a bit?」

「Yeah, I guess.」

Makoto answered, hoping that she hasn’t jinxed herself. She unsheathed her hihiirokane katana and took her stance, realising that someone younger than herself has just seen right through her. Although their opponent was strong, it was humiliating to lose one’s composure from fear in front of someone younger than her.

「The strength o’ the monster isn’t goin’ ta change what we need ta do.」

Seeing that Makoto has regained her composure, Hiroshi spoke out to get everyone back into battle mode. Haruna cast auxiliary magic on everyone as if to follow Hiroshi’s call. Compared to a song, the presence of the spell was very thin. But the easiness during the battle changes significantly just with this spell.

「It’s going to move soon.」

「Ya, brin’ it on!!」

Hiroshi puts on outclass as Mio spoke, preparing her bow and arrow. With that, the Void Resident started to move. Syncing with the monster’s movement, Haruna, who was chanting some sort of spell which wasn’t a song rushed in head-first.

「Snare!」

As Haruna cast some kind of spell, the ground beneath the Void Resident collapsed and the monster lost its balance for a moment.

Intermediate destruction magic, snare. Although most destruction magics are dull, snare was one of the flashy ones. As Haruna has already shown, the spell manipulates the ground which the opponent is standing on and make the opponent fall. The sword and magic in TRPG version is 1, in the very first re-play, the spell became famous after one of the elves in an easy-going party used it.

If things go well, the impact of the spell is huge. But if it’s used rashly in middle of battle, it had a risk of dragging one of the allies in as well, so the timing for using this spell was difficult. Also, the spell won’t activate unless the ground is made of sand, clay or any other type of ground that can be manipulated with magic. Even if the player’s skill level was high, they would only be able to move cobblestone and other rocky surfaces with a lot of their effort going towards the spell. So, the situation in which this spell could be used was very limited. Unlike TRPG, it didn’t have requirements like there needs to be an earth spirit around. Yet, with the spell requiring a ground that can be easily manipulated, it was safe to say that the difficulty of using this spell was about the same as it was in TRPG.

The most difficult part about this spell was that the opponent needs to have their legs on the ground. So, it won’t be very effective against multi-legged monsters. On top of that, even though Haruna has gained a decent amount of skill level, she has not used this spell even once after being teleported over to this universe.

「… it’s the same with Tatsuya but you’re also using pretty niche skills.」

The Void Resident didn’t fall down. But it did lose its balance for a split second and stopped its movement for a split second. There, Makoto sliced in her Katana and commented on Haruna’s skill set in a helpless tone.

「Destruction magic is pretty interesting as long as you get your head around its use.」

Haruna responded as she cast a chantless destruction magic. The next spell she activated was Itch. A type of spell that causes an itch somewhere on the opponent’s body and averts their movement. Haruna didn’t think the spell would be effective but she cast it anyway just to tease the monster a bit. Yet, the spell was surprisingly effective against the Void Resident. It started to scratch around their side.

Haruna started to sing Heart Sutra Gospel, worrying that if she annoyed the monster anymore, it might change its location. Since she was now singing with all she has, she couldn’t cast anything along with the song even if it was a chantless spell.

Haruna knew quite a lot of destruction magic. However, during the main boss fight, she usually played the role of a healer and was mostly singing. When they go up against a trash mob, the battle would end before she could cast any of the destruction magic. Recently, they were mostly going against the main boss which were related to the fallen God so instead of casting destruction magic, it was more effective to sing Heart Sutra Gospel to reduce the monster’s stat. So, there weren’t many occasions where she got to use the destruction magic which she has learnt.

Now, it was very rare for them to have the type of battles they had before Tatsuya and others joined in. But even back then Haruna had to back up Hiroshi’s attacks since the difference in their force were so different. So, even back then she couldn’t really use any of the destruction magic. Also, when she was working with Hiroshi alone, most of the boss class monsters which they were going against were resistant against destruction magic. So, it was faster to fish off the fight with close-range combat. Even between those two periods of time, Haruna either had to take on an Avant-grade role or they were going up against a monster that destruction magic wouldn’t be as effective on. So, there wasn’t a lot of chance for her to cast any of the destruction spells.

The only reason why Haruna cast destruction magic this time was because she noticed that the foot of the Void Resident turned into something that looked like a hoof while it was enlarging. So, she thought the monster might trip over if she cast snare. But also, there was a part of her that thought it would be a little boring if she just used Heart Sutra Gospel.

Since she thought it would be boring if she only sang, Haruna might be self-conscious of the fact that she doesn’t really stand out; even though she’s one of the easy targets when it comes to boss fights.

「Well, it looks like it’s lost its balance so let’s finish this off quickly for the sake of the feast!」

Haruna changed the song. Makoto called in as if to paint a landscape to the situation. They closed in right away. Attacked the monster, as they dodged its attacks. Although they could have just used their major abilities, they still had to check the Void Resident’s stats.

「I guess its size isn’t for nothing. It’s really tough.」

Makoto attacked, and frowned at the toughness she felt against the cut. She did attack without any plan. And the ability she used prioritized cost efficiency. Yet it was an intermediate-level single-shot skill, and it didn’t even leave a scratch on the monster.

「Mako, what about the elemental attack?」

「It’s not impossible but unlike lumen tribe based skills the force of the skill is low.」

Mio politely double-checked the attacks Makoto could use. Makoto only responded with a bitter expression. She didn’t possess any convenient skills like Temporarily Granted Holy Attribute. Also, katana itself had very little elemental skill. If she learnt a different kind of attacks, she might be able to obtain more elemental attacks. However, it wasn’t something to whine about it now.

「Because of the impact from Sanctuary, the elemental type is being strengthened. Mako, even with low elemental ability, it could be effective against the monster.」

「You’re right, I’ll give it a try.」

Hearing Mio’s opinion, Makoto stepped in to see how it goes. The ability she used was Wind Slash. Majority of the katana’s ability are foundation abilities and even though the name included the word wind, it somehow had an elemental attribute to it.

She faced the boss. Seeking out for the timing to attack. Just then, Hiroshi cracked the void like sickles of the monster with Smash. The monster lost its balance. Another Smash and the monster stumbled over. Seeing this, Makoto rushed in.

「Take that!!」

One slice, with all her power. She sliced through something that felt like a hard film and the katana sliced into its body. It was barely a scratch. But the monster definitely took some damage. Unfortunately, she has used all of her elemental abilities just to break the monster’s barrier. But the monster did take some damage from it. So, its physical stats wasn’t that impressive.

「It’s defending itself with a physical barrier rather than its stats!」

「So like the wall around the general-humanoid decisive weapon’s heart?」

「Yeah, something like that. The barrier is really tough but its main body is thin compared to a Tower Golem or Hiroshi.」

As they made a unique comparison, Makoto held her Katana again.

「So the problem is how we’re gonna deactivate its barrier.」
