「Even if you say that, what about you work?」

As the head magician in the royal palace, it wouldn’t be possible for him to take time off work just because his wife was not feeling well. But he shut down my train of thought in a second.

「Just one day wouldn’t be that big a problem. Moreover, your health is much more important than my work.」

…I never expected this workaholic of a man to say something like that. It certainly surprised me, but even more than that, I was touched. Oh no, what do I do? Although it wasn’t the right time for it, I was filled with happiness.

To selfishly keep the palace’s head magician, someone who spent day and night tirelessly working for the country,  to myself. Even I felt impudent myself. I had yet again internalized the fact that, before this 「Palace’s Head Magician」was the  「Palace’s Head Magician」, he was first and foremost, 「My Husband」. The reason that this man was still working this tough job as the「Palace’s Head Magician」, was partially because the higher-ups wished to keep a Pure Black Magician in the country. And that just happened to coincide with how this man enjoyed the convenience that having such authority sometimes brought to him. If their intentions started to diverge, I’m sure that that man would instantly throw away his status, his authority and even his name.

What a hopeless man. Although his brains and his ability as a magician were both obviously a rank above the rest, he was unnecessarily ill-natured. But, for me to forgive this hopeless man, no matter how hopeless he is, I’m sure that I was the one who was truly hopeless.

「…….What are you laughing about?」

He said in his low voice. That was when I noticed that I had started giggling out of nowhere. Oh no, I mustn’t. As I had said before, It really was not the right time for this. To me, this was nothing but just a flu that was taking a bit longer to recover from. But if getting a doctor from the White Lily Court to check on me would ease this man’s mind, there would be nothing I would want more. From my perspective, of course, if I could cure whatever this is, the faster the better.

As such, I widened my smile.

「No, it is nothing. I understand. So I will take it that we will be heading towards the castle together tomorrow?」

「Yeah. Sleep early tonight.」

He spoke to me as if he were talking to a child. Being spoken to like a child, I finally started to laugh out loud. That might have been a small mistake, because his mood to seemed deteriorate even further.

*                  *                 *

The night passed, and came a refreshing new morning. Just as expected, it had started snowing. The entire kingdom was warped in pure white, and the air was freezing. Yet, at the same time, the skies had cleared up nicely. These were the kind of days that made one want to go for a walk. In the spring, I liked taking my time reading on the terrace in the courtyard, basking in the warm sunlight. But I also liked the winter, eating a piping warm hot biscuit as I walked under the clear winter sky. …… But sadly, today, there would be no time for me to relax.

The man I called my husband was bringing me to the White Lily Court first thing in the morning. That was where I was introduced to the female doctor who was to become my attending physician from now onwards. She was the doctor who that man had called 「highly skilled」. Her name was Dr. Natolise Lindeburg. I started panicking. Having something like an attending physician was blowing things out of proportion. 「Madam Lancelot, let us first examine you before we decide that.」She smiled and said. She was right.

Based on what I heard from that man, Dr. Lindeburg was very popular because of both her personality, as well as her skills as a doctor. As such, she was someone who was well sought after and well respected. Quite amazing considering how young she was.

「Let me just thank you again for taking time out of your busy schedule for me. 」

I could not help but feel guilty for causing Dr. Lindeburg to have to take time so early in the morning for me, considering how busy she must be. I bowed my head down deeply while still seated on my chair. As I bowed down,  I could hear Dr. Lindeburg’s refreshing laughter.

「It is alright. This isn’t that big a deal. Especially since we’re always causing so much trouble for Sir Agedilus. He is always putting in so much hard work for not just the Black Lotus Court, but also for the development of the White Lily Court. I am glad to be able to do whatever I can to fulfill his requests. 」

She narrowed her ice-blue eyes. Hearing how she dismissed her own efforts, I could not help but lower my head even more.

Incidentally, the very man who brought me here was quickly chased out of the room and back to his research lab in the Black Lotus Court. The reason being, as much as we were a married couple, it was still important to protect my privacy. He tried to stick around until the last possible moment, but Dr. Lindeburg, who has dealt with all types of patients and family members, had the upper hand. Chasing that man out of the examination room with a smile, I could not help but be amazed at how skillful she was. Wow, I should really learn a few tricks from her.

As such, only Dr. Lindeburg and I remained in her examination room, located in a corner in the White Lily Court. Even the nurse who had assisted with the examination just now had left the room. I naturally sat up straight as the stinging smell of disinfectant tickled my nose. Although I was quite sure that it was going to be alright, I was still nervous. That was especially because Dr. Lindeburg started to compare the medical questionnaire that I had filled up with the medical records from her examination, but with an expression more solemn than I had expected.

Based on my own evaluation, it shouldn’t be anything that serious, since it was not serious enough that it caused any problems in my daily life. I had thought that it was just that man being overly-worried, and that it was just a cold that had worsened a bit. But I now got the sense that it wasn’t something as simple as that. What would I do if it was a disease so serious that even the doctor was hesitant to tell me about it?

My thoughts became increasingly negative. Having seemed to have noticed that, Dr. Lindeburg looked up from the medical records and gave me a smile. Her smile cleanly erased off any feelings of uneasiness that I had and filled me with relief.

                「Congratulations.」

The words that came out of Dr. Lindeburg’s were very different from what I had expected to hear. I blinked, surprised at what I had just heard. I had thought that the best-case scenario would be for her to tell me that「It was just a normal cold.」. I never expected her to congratulate me.

I couldn’t help but tilt my head, wondering what on earth she meant. Why would she congratulate me for being sick? As I tilted my head, as though there were question marks written all over my face, Dr. Lindeburg started to giggle softly before she started to speak again. Her lipstick a calming red color, applied neatly.

「Madam Lancelot, it means that you are pregnant. A cause for celebration.」

                「…… Cele…bration?」

I could distinctly feel my eyes open wide. Not fully understanding what Dr. Lindeburg had just said, I just repeated the word back to her. As I sat there still confused as to what she had just told me, Dr. Lindeburg nodded deeply, with a kind smile on her face. With her smile and nod, the fact finally started to seep in. Still shocked, I put both my hands on my belly.

「Edi and I’s baby, is in this stomach…….?」

My belly was still flat. There was still no bump at all. That fact made it all the more harder to believe what I had just been told. However, Dr. Lindeburg didn’t seem to be joking or lying. It was obvious that she was really expressing her blessings.  You could see it from her warm smile. Right here, there was a new life developing within me. That’s what Dr. Lindeburg said. A precious life formed between me and no one else but that man.

Oh yes. Even though I had yet to recover from the shock that I had just experienced, I suddenly remembered, albeit a bit late. After hearing what Dr. Lindeburg said, If I think about it, my period had not come for a few months now.  I had thought that it was because of the many incidents that I had been caught up in recently, and that my body had just been unable to catch up with the bewildering events. But I was wrong. The reason for my periods not coming wasn’t because of vague reasons like that. It was because of something more certain.
