I thought that it was worth it if the man got saved, because of this. But it seemed like it forced him to be engaged with me and he has gotten bound to me. How could I say that I don’t regret that? But I was told that such was not the case. This scar was definitely a trigger, but I found out that even if I didn’t have this, he would have chosen me. I will not wish for anything more in this case. Rather than that, I feel proud of this scar which is proof of me being able to protect that man… he would get angry again if I said something like this. Since it seems like he still regrets it, from how he reacted last night, and it is true that I am sorry for making him feel like that.
「It’s fine however you think of me, but I am really happy that you value Edi as Edi and didn’t judge him based on him being a champion or the pure black. That man is…how to put it, he is really prone to being misunderstood. He is in reality a really kind man. Thank you very much for accepting Edi, your highness.」
Without being distracted by the number of titles he has, the medium with his copper-red eyes saw Edi as who he is and found him likable and that made me happy. I wonder what kind of face Edi would make when he heard this, and imagining what his face would look like brought a smile to my face.
「Is that how the things are?」
「Yes, for me at least. But keep it a secret from Edi. He might just go ahead and scold me, saying that it is naive.」
The medium was tilting his head trying to understand what I was saying. I put my finger on my lips and smiled at him. The medium looked at me with his big, beautiful, bright eyes with hints of admiration.
「You are odd.」
「Is that so?」
「Yes, you really are odd.」
「…Should I take that as a compliment then?」
「Yes, for sure, and do cherish it.」
The medium nodded majestically playing along me, we looked at each other and after a pause we burst into laughter. It felt really good laughing along. “Odd” he said, it was really a great praise for me, considering the things I had been hearing. If the medium despised the man saying that he was the pure black, then I would have acted accordingly, but it seems like I don’t have to worry about this boy doing such a thing. It seemed like he was not a just doll to the people surrounding him, but has an opinion of his own too. Hopefully, he will be like this when he stands next to the princess. I kept laughing while thinking about things like these. The medium stopped smiling. He seemed to have remembered something and he inquired, 「Why do you call your husband Agedilus as Edi?」
「Eh?」
「I have heard that you two are a married couple. Are all the married people in the royal capital like this?」
The medium told me that no married couples around him refer to each other with nicknames like I do. Hmm, it was quite a tough question to answer since there wasn’t much of a reason anywhere. It’s because I kept biting my tongue whenever I tried saying his name, because I wasn’t used to names like his. So he allowed me to call him Edi and saved me from the effort. There wasn’t really a deep meaning behind him allowing that, maybe he was just dumbfounded by me who kept apologizing whenever I bit my tongue trying to say his name. Or maybe he gave up on me after he got tired of correcting me. No matter what the reason, the only person he has allowed to call him Edi is me. There is no denying of the fact that I feel proud and happy about that. ‘Edi’ saying that fills my heart up with happiness, it has a precious ring to it. Well, even if Edi wasn’t around, telling this boy such a thing was an embarrassment that I could not bear. I felt my face getting read unconsciously. I tried concealing my embarrassment as much as possible, but the copper-red eyes stared directly at my red face. I avoided his eye contact and looked away and decided to make up a reason and get rid of this situation.
「Well…you see it’s like a habit since my childhood. Him and I are childhood friends and I have been calling him Edi since then. Don’t you have any nicknames by which people close to you refer to you as, your majesty?」
He is referred to as the medium, but even he must have a name and people close to him might have given him a nickname of some sort. It was a simple question I asked, and I thought he would answer it with ease, but the medium frowned and looked down.
「Your majesty?」
I looked down at his hair while he was positioned below my head, and the medium muttered, 「…There is none.」
His voice was really low and I wouldn’t have heard him if it wasn’t for how close we were and if we weren’t alone in the room. I repeated his words in my head and tried to understand what he meant, a bit late but I understood what he was saying and tilted my head in wonder.
「Umm, what do you mean by you have none?」
「I’m saying that I don’t have a name, everyone calls me the medium.」
It was an unexpected answer, I have observed everyone calling him his majesty or the medium from yesterday but I never expected him not to have a name. They must have thought that the child who is meant to live as the medium from his birth didn’t require a name. A name is a blessing, a prayer, a wish and according to Edi, the name binds the soul itself. It is the shortest yet strongest spell in the world. That was probably one of the reasons that they couldn’t name the medium, who is the beloved child of the spirits. Maybe I have messed up things by saying that. I felt like something really bad was about to happen. If this boy who stands as a bridge between the humans and the humans wasn’t given a name on purpose and that he hadn’t realized that he was nameless…no, if his surroundings acted in such a way to make him not realize this….. then considering all of these reasons, my dialogue till now was like stirring up a hornet’s nest. You don’t have to think too much to know how kids react to the things they don’t have.
「I’m envious, I want a name too.」
……Ah so, I wasn’t wrong. Nobody had pointed out that he didn’t have a name and that acted as a sort of hypnosis to make him believe that that was how the things were meant to be. It seems like I, an outsider, had broken the norm in his perception. I could see the dumbstruck faces of the youth and that man. It was almost as if I might hear them scolding me anytime soon that I should think before I say anything. I would not have anything to say back to him, and all I could do was to keep my head low. I am sorry, I should have thought before opening my mouth. I was hastily thinking about how to evade this situation, then the medium grabbed my hand and his copper-red eyes met mine. I wanted to throw away my composure and run. The medium smiled at me and said,
「Filmina, was it? Give me a name.」
「You, you want me to do it?」
「You taught me about this thing called name, so you need to take the responsibility for that!」
His splendid smiling face was a final blow to me. Even though he was ignorant of it, I was the one who had made him realize. But we just met, why are you giving me this great labour of naming you? Please let me go.
「Yo…your majesty. Such an act of honour isn’t worthy of someone like me. I feel like it would be better if you ask someone who knows you better rather than asking someone like me.」
Wouldn’t it be better for the medium to be named by someone close to him rather than being named by a stranger who he had just met? No matter what the reason is behind him not being named, the people of this land who are soft to him would give a name worthy of him if the medium wishes for him to be named. The female attendant or the male guard from before would surely think of a wonderful name for him.
