The medium lifted his head up slowly after a while. His copper-red eyes had a helpless glow as if he was lost.
「Then, what do I need to do? My friends are always with me. They think of me as an equal and I don’t want to give them any orders that defy their will.」
「It’s easy to teach you what you need to do but if you really care about your friends then you should find the answer on your own.」
The medium was biting his lips with frustration waiting for the man to answer, the man’s answer didn’t criticize the medium but because of that, it seemed harsher.
「Think about the things you bear once. That’s all I can say. The answer is an assignment for you and the due date is the day we leave.」
The man then proceeded to have the herb tea, on contrary to that the medium’s hands were still and he started pondering upon what the man had told him.
As I was watching the two of them, I suddenly remembered something. According to the documents that were given to me yesterday, it seems like the medium has been causing a commotion a couple of times using the spirits. It was something equivalent to a child’s tantrum. I remembered the time we got assaulted by the bandits on the way here. It is new to my memory that he countered the bandits by summoning the wind spirits but he assaulted the people from the royal palace along with them. That probably is a good example. Such an act that can cause tragedy if slightly gone wrong has been forgiven due to how this place is. If something like that had happened in the royal capital then the people who don’t like the medium would have bashed him for that without missing the opportunity. I could understand somewhat of the『 The things medium needs to bear』that man spoke about. It’s most certainly『 Responsibility』it’s something someone with power needs to know and never forget. It is something Edi and the princess bear.
The medium still doesn’t know that and it seems like my husband understands it more than I thought he hid. It’s something a Head magician of the royal palace should know but am I overthinking if I say that he knows it because of the burnt mark on my back?I put back the empty teacup on the low table and at the same time the medium lifted his head again. I thought he had a gloomy or angry expression but betraying my assumptions, it had an innocent, joyful smile.
「You really are different from others.」
The man lifted his brow when he heard his joyful tone. The medium didn’t get intimidated by the man’s silent query and continued with a smile on his face.
「You are thinking about not only me but about my friend too. My friends around you are kind. You probably are kind too. It is as Filmina had told me.」
The man’s sunrise-tinted eyes widened. It is quite rare for the man to not hide his surprise. It is quite an obvious reaction since it is extremely rare for someone to call him kind like this straightforward. It must have come out on my face that I was glad seeing him surprised like that, the man glared at me asking what I had told the medium but I pretended not to notice his gaze and poured the herb tea into everyone’s tea cup. The medium, oblivious of our silent conversation gave a big nod with a smile.
「Alright, I’ll give your assignment a serious thought. I don’t want my friends to be in trouble.」
「It would be helpful if you do that.」
「Edi.」
I called the man’s name since he didn’t let go of the sarcasm even in times like these. The man simply sneered at me. The medium saw us and seemed like he had an idea, 「Oh wait!」 He raised his voice and bent towards the man.
「Hey, Agedilus. Can you call me Snow too?」
…..Oh no, I forgot to tell him to keep shut. I might get scolded again for doing something unnecessary. Not might but definitely. The sunrise-tinted eyes of the man blinked once in surprise. He stared at the medium’s face, he kept staring as if he was puzzled.
「Snow? Is that your name, your highness?」
「Yes! Filmina named me yesterday. It’s a good name right?」
Stop, stop it young one. I was sweating cold sweats from inside but the boy didn’t seem to notice it and smiled at me once and then nodded at the man proudly. The gaze of man, unlike the medium, wasn’t friendly at all. His gaze stabbed my heart like a knife, I couldn’t bear it and I looked away. Next to me was the medium looking at the man with a gaze full of expectations like yesterday. After a few moments, the man sighed.
「Alright, I’ll call you Snow-dono then. But I’ll refer to you as your highness as usual when the people are around.」
「Yes, I understand.」
The medium deepened his smile further with joy. He tried to reach towards baked sweets on the low table again when we heard a knock on the door. We looked at the door and the lady who is the medium’s caretaker came in.
「Your highness, its time.」
「I see. See you again Agedilus, Filmina. It was a productive time.」
The medium lightly leaped off the sofa and picked up a sweet and put it in his mouth. He left the room along with his caretaker.
I watched him till he left and then I stood up to take away the tea set, it was then that I heard a low voice, 「Wait.」
「You did something unnecessary again, didn’t you. What were you thinking of being the godmother of the beloved child of the spirits?」
The man seemed dumbfound by my actions and seemed like he didn’t have any room left to be angry. I sat down again on the sofa. It couldn’t be helped you know.
「I’m really sorry. It was the medium’s wish. I couldn’t say no to his plea…. And it seems to me that it isn’t just me who is taking his side you seem fond of him too.」
「What?」
「Oh my, you were oblivious about it? If it was the usual you, you would have left him to his fate if someone fell asleep like that. You showed him your power and on top of that gave an explanation. What kind of change of heart is that? 」
That’s right, come to think of it this man isn’t that kind. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he had continued his lesson leaving the sleeping medium and said that he had done his job. But he didn’t give up on the medium and gave him a second chance. This is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
「The reason you are soft towards the medium isn’t only because he is the princess’ partner but because he is similar to Widnichol-sama and Lucius-sama isn’t it? 」
His eyes slightly opened when I took the names of the young boys who admired him from the bottom of their heart. Oh, it seems like he really was oblivious. The medium’s behaviour is similar to the behaviour of those cute two when it comes to interacting with Edi. I thought it was the reason Edi was soft but I didn’t think he was doing like that without noticing it.
Oh my, my, I muttered and the man looked away from me.
「–Who knows.」
The man muttered in a faint voice while looking away and that made me laugh. This man is bad at faking things as always.

A few days passed after that. The medium’s education is proceeding steadily. The manners and etiquette that I teach is perfect from how to talk and walk to how to eat if it comes to the minimum requirement. Regarding the magic lessons that the man is teaching, the medium has begun to learn the magical language and gained means to communicate with the spirits through it, he used to communicate with them using his instinct before but now he has a solid and stable way to do so if it comes to easy things. It is still not mature enough to be called spirit magic but if this might make him ponder upon what it means to be with the spirits and if it helps him find the answer then nothing is lost on us. Although he still hasn’t found the answer yet, but at this rate he would get to the answer sooner or later.
The medium is probably intelligent to begin with. If he is willing to learn then he absorbs things being taught like a sponge. The keyword is, if he is willing to learn. That’s the important point.
