That man asked in a voice that was beyond astonishment, that sounded even close to admiration. The Hero laughed through his tears and said: 「I mean」

The Hero desperately wiped his face with the back of his hands. It seemed that he was completely overcome with emotions. I didn’t think that he would be so happy for us.

I silently stepped on the foot of that man, who sighed as if he were fed up from the bottom of his heart. 「Ah」Looking back at that man, who let out a small wince, I took a handkerchief out from the pocket of my coat.
「Sir Yuri, please use this.」
「I’m sorry, thank you.」The Hero said as he accepted the handkerchief that I handed to him. Using that, he wiped his face again. Ah, as he wiped his face, that dignified face of his started to turn red.
What a waste, I thought. Without looking at me, the Hero desperately continued to fight those tears of his that wouldn’t seem to stop flowing even now. Seeing him like that, I naturally couldn’t control letting out a smile.
「Thank you very much, Sir Yuri. Those tears of yours are a more valuable gift than any other. Edi, you too. 」
「A man’s tears are just annoying.」
「Sigh, Edi」
I glared at the man who, rather than expressing his gratitude, spout out words that showed just how annoying he found it. If only he could just honestly say his thanks at times like this. He really was a thoroughly dishonest, hopeless person. I was amazed at how he was about to say something like 「annoying」. Whose mouth did that word come out of? This man had no obligation to say words like that.
「But you were crying so hard when I told you about the baby……!」
「Don’t say anything unnecessary.」
Quickly shutting my mouth, that man glared at me and spoke in a low voice. Even though I was just trying to speak the truth. He really was being ridiculous. I looked up with a critical eye at those sunrise-colored eyes. As we continued to glare at each other silently, the Hero started to laugh out loud.
「Hahaha! You guys really never change. I’m relieved.」
His mood seemingly not affected by that man’s words, the Hero laughed brightly. The Hero wiped off the last tear from his eyes and spread his arms out wide.
「It’s a bit late, but again. Welcome to the Schtorenvihein region!」
Seeing the Hero say that with an expression as clear as the blue skies, I was filled with joy. I yet again thought about how thankful I was to have a kind person like him as a friend. But I couldn’t just stay there being all happy. I wasn’t in a position where that was allowed.
「Sir Yuri. Again, please accept my sincerest apologies.」
I felt really bad that we were forcing a person as kind as him to take up all these troublesome things. Although we said that it was just therapy by getting a change of scenery, in reality, we were in a situation where we were being hunted for by the Royal Capital. In reality, it was confinement. There was no doubt that he faced many problems for taking us in. He probably faced objections, and even if not, there would probably be baseless criticisms against him after he takes us in.
Yet, the Hero was full of laughter just now. He didn’t show a single sign of loathing on his face. I somehow felt that him going to these lengths probably meant that it wasn’t just because of his good nature.
However, in response to my apologies, the Hero just tilted his head, seemingly confused.
「Apologies? What? About what?」
His voice reflected just how confused he was, as shown by his movements. That tone of his in turn made me hesitate.
「What do you mean about what……」
I didn’t know what to say. There were a huge number of things to be sorry about. First of all, there was the thing where we asked him if he could house Noct. And now he was taking us in when we’re being chased by the Royal Capital. Rather than being thankful, I couldn’t help but feel apologetic. The Hero had the right to be angry. He should be angry. Yet, he was smiling at us with that kind smile that I had always known.
「I’m really happy that you guys are relying on me. I’m just happy that you guys are able to come like this and that I’m able to meet you guys. After hearing about the details as to why the two of you left the Royal Capital, my parents and I decided to take you guys in. We weren’t forced to do it at all.」
「B-but!」
「Hm. If Filmina really is really that concerned about it, I’d rather she just thank me instead of apologizing. I would be much happier that way. 」
The Hero simply said that, as if this was not that big a thing to him. I really felt saved by those words of his. How calculating I was. If the Hero spoke honestly, there would probably be nothing more troublesome than this. Yet, the hero didn’t speak a word about it and smiled at us.
I could feel the apologetic feeling and anxiety that had been tightening my chest the entire way from the Royal Capital melting away. I somehow managed to hold back the tears that had formed in my eyes. I then bowed my head down, with all the gratitude I could muster, just like how I did for the Princess and my family the other day.
「Thank you very much, Sir Yuri.」
「You are very welcome.」
In response to the Hero’s cheerful smile, I smiled back clumsily. As I stood there, a hand held onto mine. That man, the owner of the hand, was looking away for some reason. What was he trying to do? I gazed at him to urge him to continue. Finally, that man directed his gaze at the Hero.
「Yulifalet」
「Hm? What is it?」
「I’d like to thank you too」
「What」
「Oh my」
Hearing those unexpected words, both the Hero and I blinked our eyes blankly. Wrinkles were etched deeply between that man’s eyebrows.
「…….What? Do you have something to say?」
That man asked in a low voice. In response, both the Hero and I tilted our necks.
「N-nnno, it’s nothing!」
「Yes, that is right.」
I was able to restrain myself to only give a gentle smile, but the Hero was beaming with joy, as if he could not contain his happiness. Even if he said it was nothing, his expression completely betrayed those words of his. His words weren’t persuasive in the least. I could feel it in my skin that that man’s mood was dampening by the second. And it seemed that the Hero had sensed that too. Turning around in a panic, he walked two or three steps forward before waving back at us.
「Th-then, let me guide you around our mansion. And could you be so kind as to come to meet my father and mother? 」
「Oh dear, that would be an honor. Here, let us go Edi.」
「…….Yeah」
「I’ll have the servants come help to move your belongings so you can just enter empty-handed. As well as, Filmina, please watch your step. Especially because the ground isn’t paved like it is in the Royal Capital.」
I nodded in response to those considerate words of his. That man took my hand without saying a word and guided it towards his arm. Knowing what that man wanted to do without him having to say it out loud, I laughed and entangled my arm around his.
「Thank you very much Edi. I’ll be lending your arm, alright?」
That man didn’t respond to my thanks. He really should learn from the Hero. But the fact that this man wasn’t able to say those things out loud honestly was something that I already knew very well. I couldn’t see anything because his head was hidden under the hood. But there was no doubt that, right now, those fair-skinned ears of his were dyed pink. I had known him for so long. I understood things like that without having to make sure every time.
Showing kindness in an obvious way was by no means anything embarrassing. But this man, who was still embarrassed… or more accurately, shy about doing so, really was a hopeless, and also adorable person.
