Volume 6 Chapter 10: The Road Ahead
The second day of the trial.
Starting early in the morning, we were making our way through the forest toward the next checkpoint shown on the Divine Codex’s map.
「We’ve walked a fair bit, but this forest is still dense… It’s huge.」
Hearing my remark, that I uttered aloud, Lorie replied:
「It is. If you look at the map, you’ll see this forest stretches across multiple mountains. It’s massive.」
I glanced at the map again. Sure enough, several mountain ranges were completely covered by forest.
Aside from the plains around the Spirit City itself, almost everything here was wooded.
「In the Human Realm such a forest wouldn’t be unusual in the wilds or uncharted lands. I didn’t expect one to be this close to the city.」
「The Spirit Realm isn’t as developed as the Human Realm. That said, the roads in this area of the forest have been maintained.」
Just as she said, the ground beneath our feet had been packed into a proper walking path, making travel much easier.
「But the fact that there’s a road means people come out here, right?」
「Yes. There’s a spot deep in the forest where valuable ingredients for magic potions grow in clusters. They’re difficult to cultivate, so we harvest them here.」
「I get that. In alchemy too, there are materials you can’t synthesize artificially. They’re precious.」
Daisy said..
…Without certain materials, there are not only things you can’t create—there are things you can’t repair.
Like that broken spear I had in my transport bag right now.
Understanding how important these materials were, it made sense that they’d carved out a path here.
As I was thinking about all this, Lorie, still walking ahead, pointed her finger.
「And our next destination is near that harvesting site.」
She indicated a location deeper in the forest, in the direction of a green-tinted mountain visible through the trees.
「It’s not far. Let’s go.」
「Got it.」
We walked for another several dozen minutes. And then—
「…Huh?」
We were met with a collapsed slope—steep enough to be called a cliff—and what was clearly the remains of a collapsed tunnel, once carved through it.
