Frontier Lord Chapter 038 – The Long Eared Trio Act 1 (Part 2)

「Well, how should I put it… First of all, I have not done anything bad. And I wasn’t trapped inside because I was being punished. Still… Explaining why I was trapped in this box might prove to be a bit difficult… To put it simply… My friends tried to do something bad to Lord Dias. And, in the end, they ended up being captured by Lord Dias. And so Lord Dias and the others began looking around, searching to see if there weren’t any other of my friends hiding around that were planning to do something bad.」

I began recalling the events of one week ago to the girls. About how I had gotten separated from the others. I tried to explain it in an easy to understand manner so that the two of them would grasp it without any problems.

「And I just happened to be there at the time, and I didn’t do anything wrong, and I didn’t intend to do anything wrong… … but since my acquaintances and I look so much alike, I thought that people might mistake me for someone who was planning to do something bad. I was afraid of being mistaken for a bad guy and that Lord Dias and the others would punish me… And I got really scared and ended up running away. But by that time there was nowhere else for me to run to… That is why I decided to hide in a crate that was nearby. Then, right after I hid myself, a heavy load was placed on top of the box’s lid and I had no way to get out of the wooden crate… And that is how I ended up inside.」

Although it was a very pathetic and embarrassing story, this was the way in which I had found myself inside the wooden box.

I, of course, had no idea that in the course of their search the would place other packages on top of the crate’s lid.

And to top it all off, when the search had finished, no one had bothered to even check this package…

I had believed that when it came time for them to unload the packages, that they would move the things on top of the lid away and that I would have a chance to escape. However, they’d simply moved the crate I was in, and the packages on top of it altogether. 

That said, at the time I still hadn’t had the courage to speak up and ask for help from Lord Dias and the others. Thinking that they would still be angry.

There had been a few times since then when Lord Dias and others had passed by the crate, but I hadn’t been able to speak up. As such, time slowly passed by, and before I had realized it a whole week had gone by with me being trapped in the box.

Thinking back about the whole situation, I really couldn’t begin to fathom what I had been thinking at the time.

The good thing was that there were a ton of beans in the crate, so at least I hadn’t worried about dying of starvation.

「Hmph… … In this case, you aren’t a friend of Dias’, are you Eyma?」

「Are you on bad terms with Dias, Eyma?」

「How should I answer… Well I guess you could put it that way… It is true that we still haven’t talked and I wouldn’t particularly call myself Lord Dias’ friend.」

When I answered their sudden question without giving it much thought, young Senai and Aihan exchanged glances, their eyes locked in a thoughtful expression.

Then they began to whisper and discuss amongst them. I could hear bits and pieces like, 「I don’t think Eyma is a bad person.」 「I also don’t think Eyma is lying to us.」 

After some time, they both nodded, as if they’d gotten to an agreement between themselves, and wiggled their long ears before turning their attention back to me.

「Eyma, there’s something that we need to ask you about.」

「It’s something that we can only ask you. We can’t ask Dias or the others in the village.」

「What? A secret question kind of thing? Something you can only ask me? If you’re asking about a secret then wouldn’t it be better to talk about it with someone you’re familiar with, rather than me, who you just met for the first time?」

「It has to be you, Eyma. We can’t talk about it with the people of the village.」

「It’s something that we can’t tell the humans about… It’s fine with you, since you’re a Beastman. We love Dias and the others but we can’t tell him. We also can’t tell Aruna, Francis or Francois because they will definitely tell Dias!」

「I see… I don’t quite follow what you’re trying to say, but if there is no one else you can talk to about this then I’m all ears. So, what is this thing that you want to ask me about?」

I asked, tilting my head to the side. Hearing me accept, the two girls began speaking at a tremendous pace, as if they had been eagerly awaiting my response.

「You see, Dias has been working to make this field. And every day he’s been working hard and coming home all sweaty. And he’s been doing his best every, every day…」

「But this place is no good. It will just suck it up.」

「The earth has no life in it. That is why what Dias is doing is wrong. It will all just be sucked up and nothing will come of it.」

「We two can do something about it being bad… but, we can’t tell the humans about it.」

「Our father and mother told us that if humans learn of the power to create forests they will use it for bad things. That is why we must never tell them about it and we mustn’t let them see us using our power.」

「It was the last promise we made with father and mother…」

「We know that we mustn’t tell the humans about our powers… but… we really want to help Dias… …」

「We can tell you about it Eyma because you are not a human. So, Eyma, what should we do?」

Young Senai and Aihan whole heartedly tried to explain their circumstances and their worries, however, I unfortunately wasn’t able to keep up.

All the stuff about Dias making a field, and how the field wouldn’t be able to work because the earth would just suck it up, and how they had the power to create good forests, but couldn’t tell the humans about it just all seemed foreign to me… …

(Wait… …)

「Young Senai, Aihan. I can’t seem to follow what you want to say with just that explanation… Could you please tell me a bit more about this so-called power and about the field that Lord Dias is trying to make?」

I asked. Seeing that I was intrigued about the matter, Senai and Aihan became all smiles, nodded cheerfully and began to explain all about what this so-called power was, and about their own mysterious powers.
