Chapter 127

After the final match of the Magic Tournament ends, and the fighting abilities of the students are measured, a banquet is held to reward the participants.

Although students who aren’t participants in the Tournament are allowed to attend, familiars are unfortunately not allowed, so Selina and Dramina had to stay behind in their rooms.

But since most familiars were demi-humans or humanoid magic beasts, just like Selina and Dramina, it was unfortunate, but it couldn’t be helped.

I felt bad about going while leaving the two of them behind, but maybe because they knew about it beforehand, Selina and Dramina didn’t seem to mind being left out that much.

As far as I could tell, they really weren’t upset about it, so it would make them feel bad if I were too apologetic to them.

I passed my arms through the sleeves of my uniform, and according to the regulations set by high society, I attached a slightly large ornament of the school crest to my chest, and put on spotless white gloves. A blue sash with gold hems hung from my left shoulder down to my right hip.

The shirt I wore under my uniform was of a finer quality suited for special occasions like this. Including a spare, I only had two pieces of clothing like that. The collar felt a bit tight, but it wasn’t enough to make me feel choked.

Selina and Dramina were helping me get dressed, and since I was letting them do what they wanted, they were having a lot of fun with it.

They had already prepared my outfit beforehand, but they were fussing over even small details, like the school crest, the necktie pin, and the cufflinks. Although I didn’t think they had to bother with such tiny details, they got heated and debated with each other over every little thing.

All students who attend the banquet are required to wear their school uniforms, so Christina and Lenia and the others should also be wearing their uniforms, but would they also be going to these kinds of lengths to look as fashionable as possible, even if restricted in clothing choices?

「Alright, this should be good, Dran. Yes, no matter which angle I look from, you look wonderful and gentlemanly!」

Selina took a long time to tie my necktie, but her whole face was lit up with her smile as she looked at me with complete adoration. Even though they had made only slight changes to my uniform, and it shouldn’t look all that different from usual, those small changes must be very important to them.

Being experienced in this type of thing, Dramina had a superior fashion sense, and seemed to agree with Selina as she nodded to herself, but she also always looks at me under a favorable light, so it was a bit worrisome.

「Yes, it is really unfortunate that we cannot accompany you, but all the other familiars have to endure being separated from their masters as well, so Selina and I will be with Nyx and Fran, waiting for our beloved masters to come home. Right, Selina?」

Fran was Phenia’s familiar, a female flame cockatrice.

Originally, a cockatrice’s beak and claws have the ability to turn things into stone, but flame cockatrices are a subspecies that can produce flames instead, and they are giant birds that can run around with five to six people on their backs.

Her compatibility with Phenia is outstandingly excellent, so much that they can communicate without exchanging a single word, so when they enter battle together, they raise each other’s power, creating a flaming hell that surpasses any other ever made in the finals of the Magic Tournament.

Fran herself had a gentle nature, and she was quite fond of us as well. Through the blessing of being a familiar, she had enough intelligence to communicate using simple human words.

Well, with that said, the discussion about Fran didn’t last that long. In response to what Dramina said, Selina didn’t seem to have any objections whatsoever.

「Yes, Dramina. It will be very lonely being left behind by you, Dran, we will stand shoulder to shoulder with our brethren who will also be left alone, and distract ourselves from our loneliness with each other’s company」

With that said, Selina came over to literally stand shoulder to shoulder with Dramina, then hid her face as she pretended to cry.

I knew they were joking, but whenever these two act sad, I always immediately feel weak. Humu, it seems they had me right where they wanted me. Well, it’s worth it, so I don’t mind it.

「Don’t tease me so much, you two. I can’t do anything when you two sulk like that」

When I raised both my hands in defeat, Selina and Dramina glanced at each other and giggled. It seems they both wanted to confirm with each other that they would stop teasing me here.

If they knew that I let out a relieved sigh in my heart, even Alexander would be angry and bite me, thinking I was pathetic.

「Fufu, as expected of you, Dran, you are weak to women. Even though all you have to do is say the word, and we’ll do as you say. Right, Selina?」

「Yes, but it’s a bit of a relief to see that Dran doesn’t see through everything all the time.

Dran, we’ll be happy so long as you say you’ll come home to us again. Your home is where we are」

Well, that’s what I thought too, but I thought it would’ve been wise not to say it out loud myself. So I decided to answer them honestly in my own way. I hugged both Selina and Dramina close, and told them the words they wished to hear.

「We’ll be apart for a bit, but I’ll come back as soon as I’m done. So until then, please wait for me」

Maybe because I was hugging them for a long time, Selina and Dramina looked joyful as they nodded in response. Since I would be separated from them for a while, even if it was for a celebratory banquet, I prayed that it wouldn’t take too long.

The feast will be held in the grand hall of the main building of the Royal Magic Academy.

The place will be filled with hundreds of people, including not just the people affiliated with all the Magic Academies, but all the servers and orchestra musicians who will be there to add to the atmosphere.

Attendance to the banquet is not so strict, so each person can just go if they have the time for it.

We were known for being closer than any of the previous representatives, and we had promised to head over to the grand hall all together.

As I walked down the hall, statues of fairies held up luminous stone lamps, which lit up the hall so brightly, there wasn’t even a bit of darkness anywhere. I could see the faces of the others as I made it to the door that led to the grand hall.

「I’m sorry I’m late」

Phenia, Christina, and Nell were waiting together with Fatima and Irina, and they were all wearing their school uniforms made for ceremonies.

Christina was exchanging pleasant conversation with Phenia, but when she looked my way, a somewhat rare expression rose to her face as she spoke to me.

「Don’t worry about it, we also just arrived. Even so, it’s quite rare to see you by yourself. I’ve gotten used to seeing Selina or Dramina always with you」

「It’s a bit embarrassing to say, but I get lonely easily. If I don’t have anyone by my side, I can’t stay calm」

This was my honest confession. In my previous life, loneliness was always my biggest weakness. Without a doubt, loneliness and desolation were my natural enemies, and the worst poison to me.

Since I’ve been aware of this for a long time, I wasn’t ashamed to say it, but Phenia looked at me from head to toe as she casually opened her crimson dyed phoenix feather fan and spoke.

「You are as honest as ever. At any rate, that ceremonial uniform actually suits you pretty nicely. You could enter high society like that without any shame」

「If you say that, Phenia, then I have nothing to worry about. Truth be told, I was a bit worried I would be laughed at」

「I assure you, there is no need for you to worry about that. Besides, if there were perchance someone rude enough to laugh at a friend of mine, then I would willingly duel with them, with my family name on the line」

Phenia declared that without any hint of shame, but to hear the young lady of a noble family say so lightly that she would enter a duel for me, was on the contrary, not very good for my heart.

What made it even worse was the fact that when Dramina and I were called to the governor’s office, we were told that Christina and Nell had declared they would be willing to even attack the governor’s office, if push came to shove.

Of course, I was happy that my friends would say such things so enthusiastically for my sake. But that was that, and this is this.

Even so, the one who should have chided Phenia was Christina, who was also a fellow noble, albeit illegitimate, but it seems she agreed with her, as she nodded.

If these two were to go all out, even if they were to declare an attack days in advance, giving the governor’s military forces time to prepare for battle, these two would probably be able to take them all out.

I’m happy they feel that way, but I did wish Christina, as someone of the same social status, would chide or advise Phenia not to do something like that.

Probably, just as much as Phenia would challenge someone to a duel for me, Christina was just as likely to do the same. And Nell, with her attitude, would definitely happily help out too.

「It’s okay. If it’s us, we can win even against everyone from the other four schools」

Nell did speak up, just as I expected of her, but her scope was far bigger than I imagined.

It seems Nell was assuming that we’d be dueling not any individual students, but was rather expecting a school-wide conflict. Aren’t you being a little too hot-blooded?

「Dran, you don’t have to worry so much! The Headmaster and all the staff, plus all the high-ranking mages and officials from the Imperial Court will be there! Lots of big shots will be there, so I’m sure there won’t be any troublemakers around」

Fatima smiled softly as she said that, and in that moment, I felt like she embodied true human virtue.

Everyone who goes to a Magic Academy acts in accordance to differences in social status, so it would be a rare occurrence if someone were to break those rules in front of the headmasters of all the Academies.

The only ones who would were either idiots, or they are such a troublemaker, that any more wouldn’t be a problem for them. The former may exist, but there is probably none of that latter.

I looked around at my friends once again, and I saw that, like me, they wore the school crest and their ceremonial sashes, and they all looked more gorgeous than usual.

It’s just that Christina, although she boasts a tall and beautiful figure, she was wearing the male school uniform. She still looks extremely pretty, but on occasions like these, I think it would be fine if she wore the female uniform instead.

Actually, I’d love to see it, at least once.

When she was fighting in the tournament, with her fighting style, the boys’ school uniform makes sense, but in this case, the girls’ uniform would be better, and I’m surely not the only one who thinks so. Well, anyway, I want to honestly listen to what she has to say first. That is just who I am.

「Christina, the male uniform does look good on you, but won’t it be a problem for you not to wear the female uniform on this occasion?」

「Oh, I’m ashamed to say this, but I’m not yet used to wearing feminine clothing. Until my father took me in, I always dressed as a boy because it was quite dangerous otherwise.

Due to that, female clothing still doesn’t suit me, and besides, it doesn’t break any rules, so I probably won’t be reprimanded. It may raise some eyebrows, but I’ll deal with it when the time comes. I also wore male clothing during the Magic Tournament anyway」

After I pointed it out, Christina’s eyes wandered about restlessly, and she began to look uneasy. Based on what she said, it seems she’s quite resistant to female clothing, mostly out of habit from her childhood, but I think it is such a waste.

If someone of her beauty were to dress up, then even stone-hearted, stoic clergymen would be entranced. I mean, she really is so beautiful that she could be invited to be a follower to a god of beauty, or rather, she might even make the god jealous of her instead.
