Chapter 135

When the light in the surroundings faded out, only a split second had passed in Christina’s body clock. They had been transported from the sky garden basked in sunlight to a location filled with grey buildings.

Christina and her companions were standing on a platform slightly higher than the ground, a pedestal engraved with complex magic writings and mystical symbols. The air was dry, and despite the presence of spirits, it was an unsettling place to be in. The vast space was filled with a disconcerting atmosphere that penetrated the bones.

Christina looked to her side to ascertain that Radia was there, along with a crouching Frau and the two maids sticking close by. At the very least, she was relieved that they had not been separated after the teleportation, unlike their experience in Srania, the city in the sky. It was easier for Christina to protect Frau and the rest if they were within sight, and there was no need to rescue her companions from captivity.

That being said, Christina was aware of the dozens of enemies in this space. She maintained her composure and unleashed her fighting spirit. At the same time, Radia’s eyes glazed over grimly upon noticing the enemies surrounding them.

The people who had encircled them hostilely were wearing the same dark blue robes as the intruders of the sky garden, though their ages, races, and genders were varied. Their eyes gleamed icily as they stared at Christina and her companions.

Radia was just considering grabbing the one who looked most authoritative as their hostage to break through this standoff when an invisible force struck all five of them, including Frau and her maids.

This experience was not painful, but all their energy seemed to be drained into a bottomless pit. Even the well-trained Radia could not find it in herself to stand upright.

「I apologize for rudely striking without a word, Princess Frau.」

An elf wearing robes with unusually intricate embroidery stepped forward from the crowd of heretics. She was unaffected by the odd power on Christina and the rest as she walked toward Frau. Her long brown hair was tied together at her neck, and she had the beautiful figure of someone in her mid-twenties.

Perhaps it was due to her long worship of the evil dragon or her zealousness as a believer, but her eyes were narrow and elongated like a dragon, and dark blue patterns in the shape of scales gleamed on her skin.

「Were you the insolent ones who did this?」

Frau managed to get up on her feet, with her maids guarding her. Her gaze was dignified even as she glared at the heretical elf. As for Christina and Radia, they quietly positioned themselves between the heretics and Frau. Radia seemed to be barely moving her feet, though Christina’s movements were steady.

「Of course, I need to have a proper reason to invite the princess of a country over. This was the best way to achieve my goal.」

As the elf chuckled, Frau’s glare grew ever more threatening.

Christina and Radia had the same response as Frau, though their movements were dulled by the strange force draining their energy. Radia gritted her teeth in frustration. If trouble were to arise, she would not be able to fulfill her duty as the princess’s shield.

On the other hand, Frau straightened herself like steel and retorted the elf fearlessly with a question.

「What is your aim? What drives you to do something so audacious? Answer me!」

Christina was impressed by Frau’s dignified demeanor, finding it hard to believe that this was the young lady she had spoken to moments earlier. Clearly, Frau would make a worthy ruler.

「There is no need for you to know that, Your Highness. However, we do need the treasures kept by the royalty of Arkrest for our noble purposes. Hence, I have resorted to such brutish means in hopes that Your Highness will be our bargaining chip.」

The founding king of Arkrest was said to be an adventurer who traveled the continent. Hence, the Arkrest royal family possessed all kinds of treasures, from historical artifacts to useless items. Among all these items that seemed like mere decorative pieces, it would not be odd to find that some were in fact hidden magical weapons. Perhaps they were even creations by aliens or Devas made with unprecedented technology.

If these items were handed over to such heretics who would easily sacrifice innocent lives for personal gain, the world would be riddled with unjust deaths and calamities. Frau knew little about aliens or Devas, but she intuitively knew that she could not let these people before her succeed.

「Rogue, are you belittling the royal family? Do you think my parents are fools who would permit your wretched deeds just to save me?」

Christina was deeply amazed by the authority and dignity radiating from Frau’s petite physique, though the elf’s ears twitched in response to Frau’s words. Christina instantly detected that as a sign of irritation with her superhuman sensitivities.

「Hoho, what an impressive princess. Let’s see how long you can keep up that attitude.」

The elf let out a sneering laugh in a bid to bury her irritation, and Christina snapped back sharply.

「The wicked always spout the same words.」

The elf’s gaze landed on Christina as an incendiary smile spread on her face. She reaffirmed the tremendous beauty before her, and her dragon-like eyes gleamed salaciously. Christina was known for her beauty that would cause unwanted tragedies, though the elf’s mind was already filled with twisted thoughts of the ravishing Christina tortured by pain and pleasure.

「Such impertinent words. Are you the daughter of the Almadia clan? We’ve seen your fights in the Magic Tournament. Though, what are you even capable of within this barrier? All who steps within the Lethargy Ring will be weakened. Right now, you’re a hundred times weaker than you usually are. You can’t conjure any magic or fighting spirit. That being said, it’s impossible to escape from it…」

「That’s not true. Guaaaaagh!」

Christina took a deep breath and drew upon her magic and fighting spirit while resisting the Lethargy Ring’s effects on her.

The Lethargy Ring had blocked the flow of powers mentally and physically. Hence, Christina had simply attempted to destroy this obstacle by channeling her powers into a single forceful blow. She had neither analyzed the Lethargy Ring to come up with a countermeasure nor attempted to overwrite it. Rather, this battle of brute strength was a rather fitting tactic for a student of Galois Magic Academy.

Christina was an individual who had reached a higher order of existence than humans. Hence, analyzing and nullifying the Lethargy Ring was not beyond her abilities. Using brute strength was simply the fastest method available.

Along with Christina’s yell, silver flames engulfed her entire body and illuminated the area. This was a light formed through magic and fighting spirit, though only those possessing a special sight could see it.

Merle was not the only one startled by the intensity and quality of magic and fighting spirit. Alarm bells were ringing in the heads of the elf and the heretics with her. However, their wariness had kicked in too late.

「Hrk!」

Christina let out a sharp breath, and she zipped out of the Lethargy Ring like a gust of wind.

The elf was wide-eyed with shock as she watched Christina break free from the Lethargy Ring. It was as though Christina had possessed some kind of magic nullifying magic item. After all, it was supposed to be impossible to even walk within the Lethargy Ring unless one had already activated magic to counter it ahead of time.

「Come, Elsparda, Dreadnought!」

After Christina broke through the Lethargy Ring by sheer force, she called out to her beloved swords she had left with the Royal Guards and closed the distance between herself and the elf. She was not using a port that could attract items over long distances. Rather, Dreadnought was an ancient weapon built to defeat Ancient-Celestial Dragons, and its wielder could easily overcome the limitations of time and space.

Dreadnought, who had sensed Christina’s thoughts, was accompanied by its senior, Elsparda. Space and distance barely mattered to these two swords as they appeared in the hands of their master. Christina detected the weight and feel of her beloved swords upon her summon. With a sprint, she drew her swords and slashed at the elf without any hesitation.

Seconds before Elsparda’s mithril blade touched the elf, she raised multiple defense barriers before her. Christina could easily penetrate every single layer, and with her beloved swords in hand, the elf’s defense was rendered as useless as a thin sheet of paper.

Before the unconscious and frothing elf could even fall to the cold ground, Christina attacked the other heretics of Abyss Dawn present. With the elf down, there were only nine other heretics left, though they seemed unaware of the elf’s defeat at Christina’s hands.

Unlike the Magic Tournament, Christina did not need to restrain herself. With the swiftness of the wind and lightning, Christina struck.

A Tigerperson, two humans, a Reptilian, a Dark Elf, a Dwarf, and a Frogin—all seven of them—were slayed in an instant. The remaining two were poised to strike. One of them was a female Bearman three heads larger than Christina. Her bulging muscles, animal odor, and copper fur swelled under her ritual gowns as she prepared for battle. The other enemy was a Locusti with large compound eyes and a brown exoskeleton.

As Christina charged over, the Bearman slashed down with her large and sharp claws, while the Locusti’s leg swelled up for a kick and lashed forward like a whip. The Bearman’s arm strength was enough to render a thick armor useless, while the Locusti’s legs could easily turn boulders to dust.

These worshippers of the evil dragon were born with a physical physique approximate to that of dragons themselves. Hence, they could easily emerge from a fight with their own species unharmed while rendering their opponents into a bloody mess.

However, there was no way such powers from worshipping a dragon would work against Christina. The only way to defeat a superhuman with silver hair and red eyes was to pit them against a real dragon or someone with rather impressive powers. There was no hope for folks who barely had a taste of dragon powers to defeat a superhuman.

The Bearman’s claws and the Locusti’s kick both missed their mark, but an attack that only appeared as a flash of silver light struck them instantly. A burning pain seared their minds and they plummeted into unconsciousness.

Once the other eight fell to the ground like the Bearman and the Locusti after failed attacks, Christina shifted her glance away to pick up the sheaths and sword belt she had dropped on the floor and wrapped them around her waist.

Even after Dreadnought and Elsparda had been sheathed, Christina kept them held in her hands. She was still alert, without any thought of letting her guard down as she confirmed that the heretics were no longer moving. Only then did she call out to Frau and the rest who were dumbfounded. Only five seconds had passed since Christina broke free of the Lethargy Ring and took out all ten of the heretics; truly working as swiftly as lightning.

「Your Highness, Princess Frau. I’ve eliminated the thieving villains here. Even though the Lethargy Ring has been destroyed, are you feeling unwell in any way?」

Frau took a few seconds to answer Christina, who had voiced her concern as though she had not just accomplished an unbelievably speedy feat of defeating those ten heretics.

「Y-Yes, I’m perfectly fine. Rashi, Hebel, Radia, are you all right?」

Frau was well aware that she was the frailest out of all of them, yet she expressed her concern without any hesitation. Rashi was a Dark Elf maid in her early twenties with black hair that went down to her shoulders and eyes that turned up at the corners. As for Hebel, she was a Fox-tribe girl, with her brown hair in a braid, pearly copper eyes, and looks of a late teen.

「Your Highness, are you hurt? Radia, Hebel, what about you two?」

The intelligent-looking Dark Elf nodded slightly to Radia’s question and looked toward her companion as she spoke.

「No, I’m fine. Hebel?」

「Yes, I’m as fit as I was!」

Hebel leaped on the spot and swished her tail from side to side to demonstrate how energetic she was. In her hands, she gripped a short sword—a curved dagger that was rather rare in Arkrest Kingdom.

As Frau watched Hebel’s braid, fox ears, and tail bouncing away, a smile spread on her face. If Hebel had intended to cheer her master up with such buffoonery, she had clearly succeeded.

「Princess Frau, Laddy Christina, how should we proceed?」

While Hebel was comforting Frau, the Dark Elf maid turned to their appointed knight who had just demonstrated impressive powers for advice on their next step. Despite the question, Radia was well aware that their options were limited right now. After all, they had just been teleported from the heavily guarded royal palace to an unknown place.

They were equipped to the bare minimum, and a search for them would soon be in motion. However, they did not have any food or medicinal supplies with them even as they were stuck in enemy territory. Despite Christina’s unimaginable combat powers, their escape from the crisis right after the teleportation was certainly due to a miraculous stroke of luck. Hence, it was hard to determine whether they would even escape from this place unscathed.

「At any rate, that Dark Elf already revealed that those scum definitely want Her Highness. However, that doesn’t guarantee that she’ll be unharmed. There have been precedents of criminals killing hostages and making them look alive while they make endless demands. Since these are heretics, Her Highness’s body and soul will be in danger. Information is crucial before taking the next step. It’ll be great if we could get something out of those who’ve been defeated…」
