Chapter 137

The bodies of Selina and Dramina, who were closely related to Dran, reacted in response. As for Christina, Dreadnought and the genes of the Ancient-Celestial Dragon slayer within her stirred. There were two possible reasons for this. Either the presence of the ancient and nameless evil dragon that Abyss Dawn worshipped was present, or the past life of their friend Lenia had triggered such a response.

In Lenia’s past life, she had been created with elements of the Ancient-Celestial Dragon and slayed by the Seven Heroes. When that had happened, she had dissipated into molecules that birthed the evil dragon. Selina and her companions were reacting to this very evil dragon.

Turning her back against the soulless and heartless mass of flesh that was the evil dragon, one of the highest-ranking members of Abyss Dawn, Gajra, had a doubtful look on his dragonesque face.

Despite being a lump of flesh, the evil dragon was a great evil god whose name many feared to even utter. The power wielded by this dragon was said to be too formidable to control or even restrain. However, the truth was different. This dragon was the world’s most wicked and most powerful divine beast created by the gods.

The Devas had preserved the remains of the evil dragon poorly, leading to Abyss Dawn uncovering it in a rather degraded state. Even after attempts to nurture it back to its original state, its powers were could not compare to its former self. This was a fact that Gajra was well aware of.

Nevertheless, all living creatures would shudder in utter fear before the evil dragon. Even worse, their mental states would be crushed. Yet, every single one of the women and children standing before Gajra and the evil dragon did not seem terrified. Rather, they revealed expressions of astonishment and exhaustion.

Even after doing a double take, there were no changes in the looks on these women’s faces. It was as though fear of the evil dragon simply did not exist to them, though Gajra did not seem keen on pursuing this matter. He had probably summoned the evil dragon from the cistern for the sole purpose of capturing Prince Sperion and Princess Frau.

「Hand over Prince Sperion and Princess Frau without resistance. If you do so, your lives will be secured during the negotiations. Perhaps you’ll even be able to return alive.」

Such promises were rare for these heretics, and Gajra’s statements made it clear that he was being rather lenient. As he absorbed Lenia’s deteriorated cells and gradually transformed into a dragon, ordinary humans seemed unimaginably insignificant to him. The lives of such folks meant nothing to him.

Hence, the survival or deaths of such trifling people no longer mattered, and his words were neither born from kindness nor benevolence. Rather, it would be a waste of energy to kill these dedicated knights and maids, as well as Dran and his companions. As long as they did not interfere in the kidnapping of the prince and princess as hostages for negotiations with Arkrest Kingdom, there was no need to spare any effort on them.

The loss of numerous comrades and the high-ranking Lababa were of little concern to Gajra. After all, these people were simply sacrifices meant to feed the evil dragon. Upon hearing Gajra’s declaration, the faces of Dran and his companions were slowly colored with disbelief.

Even though Lenia’s legacy had caught their attention, Gajra was an internationally wanted felon just like Lababa and the rest of her comrades. Dran and his companions shared a single thought—they had to resolve this problem at its roots.

Christina spoke up on behalf of their party. She, who was comparable to Dran in terms of her fate, uttered words that exuded her fury.

「Don’t make us repeat ourselves. We will not hand His Highness and Her Highness over to you. Besides, the sight of that evil dragon means that we can’t let you go. I will destroy that evil dragon at all costs.」

An excessive amount of energy flowed into Christina’s hand that was gripping Dreadnought. The dragon-slaying genes within her had responded to her outburst of emotions. More importantly, Dreadnought retrieved information about Lenia’s downfall and conveyed it to Christina. As a result, Christina was fully prepared to slay the evil dragon.

If their current opponent was Lenia in her past life, Dreadnought would have to unleash a rather large output of energy. However, this evil dragon was worse than simply being in a deteriorated state. Christina could manage even with a small energy output within her control.

Christina’s intent had nothing to do with finding closure after the death of her ancestor, Semto of the Seven Heroes. Rather, a sudden desire to destroy the evil dragon with her own hands burned within her.

「It’s nothing but folly to seek a quick end to your life.」

There was no disappointment in Gajra’s voice. Rather, it seemed as though the answer barely mattered. The answer given would simply seal his decision as to whether to make these folks fodder for the evil dragon.

Christina took a step forward. Her fighting spirits and magic gushed out from her. As for Dran, Selina, Diodora, and Dramina, they tried to communicate with their gazes.

In Dran’s eyes, Gajra and his companions were unbelievably perverse in toying with the remains of his daughter. This very act made him sick to the point of lurching, and anger burned within him. However, he kept these feelings to himself before Christina, who seemed possessed by her dragon-slaying genes and fate.

The overpowering madness exuding from Christina’s entire body could only be dissipated by slaying the evil dragon with her own hands. As for Dran’s fury, that could be quelled by the destruction of the remaining genes under the care of Abyss Dawn and similar heretics.

Dran’s thoughts were conveyed to his lovers in an instant, and they devoted themselves to assisting Christina in destroying the evil dragon just as her ancestors had done.

The power of the evil dragon and Christina’s might combined was sufficient to blow up the mine above the ruins of the Devas. Though, that would probably be a deed worth honouring in the end.

The spiritual connection between Gajra and the evil dragon behind him was activated once more. The evil dragon opened its eyes and mouth for the second time, from which a frightening grey mist poured out.

Just as all parties were prepared to fight, a loud commotion stirred behind Dran and his companions. After which, Sperion and the rest could be seen. A short while after Sperion’s appearance, more heretics who had morphed into dragons and others stepped into the hall.

「Sorry, they ambushed us from the back!」

Shald was gripping a bloody long sword in his hand as he apologized. Even as he spoke. Diodora and Selina, who were close to Sperion, were already on the move.

Selina’s rich blonde hair rippled and stood up threateningly like snakes. Once again, a swirling vision of a giant snake had been conjured, making this Lamia girl exceed the boundaries of what a Lamia was. If Selina’s parents were to be present right now, they would have been appalled at the change in their beloved daughter after just one year.

「Your Highnesses, into the center of the room quickly!」

「A dragon’s power is fatal to us, though the sheer ignorance is rather pathetic.」

「However, they don’t deserve our pity, Diodora-san.」

「That’s true, and I don’t plan on sparing any pity. These guys are tainted with the resentment of the dead. If we let them live, who knows how many more people will die at their hands?」

As these two had their apathetic conversation about the heretics, those pursuing Sperion and the rest were slowly closing in. The ones who had morphed into dragons were breathing fire that was soon to reach the two ladies.

Black thorns and a giant seven-headed demon snake grew out of Diodora’s hair, easily stopping the magical Spartoi soldiers born from the claws and teeth of divine beasts, as well as the heretics sprinting along with golems.

「It wouldn’t be satisfying to just capture mere humans, though it seems like the chick was driven into the cage. Prince Sperion, Princess Frau, would you please aid me in obtaining the Rainbow Egg, a treasure possessed by Arkrest Kingdom?」

There was no trace of disappointment in Gajra’s voice despite his utter shock at the incompetence of his subjects. On the other hand, Sperion and his companions stopped mere steps behind Dran and Dramina. Sperion seemed aware of the Rainbow Egg that Gajra had mentioned, and he swiftly shielded his younger sister behind him as he halted in his steps. His eyebrows were raised in suspicion.

「The Rainbow Egg? It’s something that is as its name suggests, an egg with a rainbow shell. It has no magic, and it’s unable to inflict any harm. It’s something that’s just been stored away. Thougj, I seem to have a rough idea of what’s going on after finding out about the birth of that dragon behind you. The Rainbow Egg probably serves as the blood of the evil dragon and has part of its flesh sealed within it. It’s an important item for the resurrection.」

「You’re pretty smart. That’s right. This is a special item obtained by the Devas to seal the evil dragon’s cells. We call it the Rainbow Egg. It severs all links to the surroundings and isolates the space within. Within this egg created with the science and magic of the Devas, the cells of the evil dragon sleep. Without the knowledge of the Devas, it’s just a useless relic to you. You can only let it collect dust. However, we can resurrect the evil dragon to a form near its former self if we have it.」

「Are you going that far for such inhuman power? What’s the use of obtaining such might? Are you planning to rule the world?」

「There’s no way someone as ignorant as you would understand. Right now, the tides are changing in the world of darkness. After the death of the abominable sorcerer Bastrell, his society, Overgene, has collapsed. Moreover, the cult which worships the goddess of destruction and oblivion has ceased to exist for some reason. This is the perfect time to paint this world a different color. If I am able to fight with the power of the evil dragon, an existence older than the age of the Devas and belonging to a time where individuals could transcend dimensions, it would not be hard for me to preside over this world!」

The eyebrows of Christina, Dran, Selina, and Dramina twitched at the unexpected name that had left Gajra’s mouth. Bastrell was a great sorcerer that surpassed even the Arc Witch. However, the one who had killed him was none other than Dran. The dragon-slaying sword Bastrell had once possessed now belonged to Christina.

It was precisely because Dran had been the one fighting Bastrell that Bastrell had been defeated without a hitch. There was certainly no individual from the world of darkness who could have been a match for Bastrell—a sword-wielding man who had also been named the Dragon Slayer. Yet, at the hands of Dran and his companions, Bastrell and his leading disciples had fallen.

The intense fight between those who sought to replace Bastrell and those who saw this incident as a good opportunity was only natural. Sperion grimaced silently at Gajra’s grand ambitions, while Christina gradually entered the radius of magic and evil power of Gajra and the summoned evil dragon.

If Gajra’s wicked intentions had manifested, a single step into this realm would’ve destroyed Christina’s cells. However, Christina’s pristine fighting spirits and dual magic swords kept these malicious attacks at bay.

「There is nothing left to be said about your goals. This is just your wilful resurrection of a dragon that died eons ago to fulfill your desires. Besides, you’re presumptuous to think that you’ll be able to achieve anything after your cowardly behavior of striking only after your neck is out of the noose.」
