Chapter 140

Using the Arc Witch’s teleportation magic, the prince, princess, and the rest of us returned to the Royal City in no time. We appeared in the teleportation room within the royal palace dedicated to such purposes and were greeted by the surprised faces of magic users and knights.

The royal palace had been thrown into panic due to the abduction of the crown prince and the princess. Those who had been waiting for our return welcomed us with cheers, joyous that we had brought their royalty back unscathed. Rare praises applauding the Arc Witch were also offered.

These folks clearly assumed that the Arc Witch, the kingdom’s most formidable trump card, had successfully rescued the princess and the prince. The rest of us faltered a little at this misunderstanding, but we refrained from correcting the crowd. Instead, we watched over Merle as she grew flustered by this slight confusion. Despite being the strongest human in existence, Merle’s timid personality was a huge contrast to her abilities. This clash made her especially enjoyable to watch.

Prince Sperion let out a wry smile at the panicking Merle who was behaving unbefitting of her station, before finally swooping in to save her. He explained the abduction clearly, calming the crowd down. After that, we were told that we had earned great merit for saving the prince and princess. We were also to remain in the royal palace to relate the happenings in detail for official records.

A member of the Magic Academies and an elf such as Diadora would usually be prohibited from staying in the royal palace. Moreover, she was not the only one who might raise doubts. It was problematic for Selina, a Lamia, and Dramina, a vampire, to remain in the palace. Yet, this matter was overlooked due to Prince Sperion vouching for us and the fact that Dramina and I were favored by the five principal gods.

Fumu… I gave offerings at Mairahl’s temple recently, but it’ll be good to make another trip to express my thanks soon.

Paying respects to the gods was a different consideration for now. Since our rewards would not be decided so quickly, we remained in the royal palace and explained the encounter with Abyss Dawn in detail.

While we resided in the royal palace, I was given a private room. My fellow magic users Selina and Dramina also stayed in private rooms, though Diadora shared a room with Christina.

Even though we were allocated respective rooms, everyone gathered in my room after we finished our reports on the abduction. As we enjoyed the tea prepared by the palace maids, we spent our time leisurely.

Selina’s non-human appearance tended to startle people who met her for the first time, but these maids were well-educated enough to leave the room without leaking even a trace of astonishment. Once they left, they waited outside the room for any further requests.

「Christina, I was so sure that Princess Frau would summon you. I’m surprised that you’re joining us.」

The fruit cakes served up were the pride of the palace’s confectioners, though Christina had almost cleared enough to fill three dining halls by now. Hearing that she was spoken to, she licked her lips clean of cream. Such behavior was unbecoming of a noble’s daughter, but there was no need for her to restrain herself with friends like us.

Despite Christina’s massive consumption of sugar and butter, not a single sign of excess fat could be seen on her body. It was really a wonder where she stored all that nutrition.

「It’s probably because of the recent kidnapping. Princess Frau won’t be allowed out of that heavily guarded room anytime soon. It’s not too bad, but I still pity her a little.」

「I’m sure Princess Frau wants to meet you again while you’re still in the Royal City. She’s probably thinking of an excuse to come to you.」

Even though I had only interacted with Princess Frau briefly, Selina, Diadora, Dramina, and I could all tell how charmed she was by Christina. She viewed Christina with a passion akin to that of a young lady in love. There was no doubt that Princess Frau would be worried about Christina’s future, though Christina was sensible enough to soothe such anxieties.

「I’m sure Dramina has many similar experiences. What did you do?」

Christina appealed for help to Dramina, a fine lady who shared equally mesmerizing looks and far more experience in life.

With only friends present right now, Dramina removed her veil and exposed her bare face. She lowered the cup of black tea fused with my blood from her lips and answered Christina.

「I have experienced similar passionate gazes as you are receiving now, but I’m a queen. All my experiences concern marriage for succession. My methods of putting forward demanding requests or rejection with my authority as the queen are probably useless to you. However, I have a word of advice. It would be important to accept Princess Frau’s feelings instead of brushing them off. No matter how displeasing the answer is, Princess Frau will come to terms with it in time, even if she has to bawl her eyes out in the process. Thankfully, Princess Frau’s feelings for you have yet to develop into love. It would be best to handle this while the wound inflicted remains shallow.」

「Yet to develop? Yet…」

Christina’s expression seemed to cloud over faintly as she caressed her face, the likely cause of this problem.

When Christina had interacted with Princess Frau, she had already put on the Agrilia’s Bracelet which made its wearer ugly. Hence, Princess Frau’s adoration clearly did not stem from just Christina’s looks. Though, the only person who could empathize with her right now was Dramina.

「Yes, yet to develop. Without the bracelet you borrowed from the headmaster, she would’ve fallen head over heels to the point of no return. I highly recommend that you keep a mental image of Princess Frau as a prince in fairy tales.」

「Unfortunately, I’ve never been in a romantic relationship with a woman before, so I’m not quite sure how to respond. I’d like to give up, but let’s just ponder over this a little longer.」

It was rare for Christina to express such desperation, and Dramina and I felt sympathy for her swell within us.

No one present had been in a relationship with the same gender before, and it would not do for us to offer slipshod advice. Leaving Christina to deal with Princess Frau’s feelings alone seemed rather unkind, but we had no other choice but to do so. For Christina, keeping Princess Frau’s adoration at bay might as well be harder than slaying Gakra and the evil dragon.

Diadora and Selina had their arms crossed and conflicted expressions on their faces. As they spoke to Christina, they revealed a tone of sympathy and arrogance intermixed.

「Sorry, Christina. I’ve only ever been in a relationship with Dran. I can’t offer any words of advice.」

「Likewise for me. I have no interest in other men other than Dran. Well, I can only wish you all the best. Shall I introduce some folks from Doriad too? Most of them are only interested in men, but there are a couple who are cool with women too.」

Diadora chimed in after Selina spoke. Even though their words came out in an apology, they seemed to be expressing their adoration for me. A bitter look clouded over Christina’s face, one that she would hardly reveal to strangers. Then, resentment filled her eyes as she glanced at Selina and Diadora. That, too, was a rare sight.

「Seems like I can’t find any allies here. Goodness, I confessed my feelings to Dran as well, but I’ve yet to be treated as a lover…」

These words left Christina’s mouth, along with a reproachful look sent my way.

During the time when Alexander had descended to the ground, I had been swept away by the flow of events even after Christina had confessed her affection for me. Back then, I was busy with preventing Alexander from destroying the earth, explaining matters to Leviathan, and appeasing Vaje who had fainted. My relationship with Christina ended up remaining the same as before.

Perhaps my status as a human being might have been a factor in this matter. Yet, even as Christina grumbled endlessly, she did not genuinely mean to vent any anger on me.

At this moment, Selina whispered to me about certain unthinkable behavior of Christina.

「After Christina defeated Gajra, her attitude has been different. She seems more relaxed, or at least she isn’t as reserved around us. Heh heh, she’s a strong rival for your heart, but I like her more like this.」

「Oh, just regard this as Christina’s true nature.」

「That’s what I think too. Though, haven’t you given her a reply?」

「I let the moment pass back then. After that, our attitudes toward each other didn’t change, and our relationship remained the same up to now.」

「Well, the truth about her ancestors can’t be denied. Even though she might not want to harp on that matter, I’m sure she’s somewhat bothered by it. I have no intention of giving up my place as your lawful wife, but is she likely to become your fourth lover?」

It was a question that was hard to answer. The reply seemed direct, yet challenging in a certain way as well. I knew that I was Christina’s closest male counterpart, and I certainly hoped for her happiness. Moreover, I was well aware of Christina’s feelings for me.

「Fumu, I’d better be prepared to be stabbed by the students of the magic academy at this rate.」

Selina chuckled at my roundabout remark, having clearly understood my answer. Even though Selina could not read my mind perfectly, I was starting to feel that she could probably grasp a good 90% of my thoughts.
