Chapter 168

When Emperor Guispar of the Romal Empire died, the mourning team of the Arkrest Kingdom departed earlier than was customary, and set out along one of the main roads of the empire.

The people of the empire who we passed along the way would see us and then make way for us to pass with startled looks on their faces, but when they noticed our flag hanging at half-mast in condolences, their faces all suddenly turned into ones of concern.

We can only guess about the speed of information transmission and the degree to which information is controlled within the empire, but perhaps news of the emperor’s death has not reached everyone in the empire yet.

Just as we had discussed with His Highness, the mourning team traveled through the southern part of the empire, and headed for the imperial capital in the center of the empire, called Romaldia.

In the southern part of the empire, there were many former demi-human nations that were annexed to the empire by military force, and so the purpose of us passing through here is to show them, who are constantly dissatisfied with the empire, that the emperor’s death was a fact, and that the empire may break apart soon.

Although this is what politics is all about, I feel a certain reluctance and intimidation in my heart about the fact that I must get used to things like this.

I wore the Imperial Guard knight’s clothes that were loaned to me, and as I rode forward while mounted on my horse, I talked mostly through telekinesis with Dramina about the future of the empire, and the involvement of the Kingdom.

After I graduate from the Magic Academy, I will return to Bern Village in the northern part of the kingdom, so I will not have to get much involved with the Romal Empire which lies at the western border of the kingdom, but depending on what happens during this condolence call, there is a high chance that I will be recruited.

When I told Dramina about that through telepathy, she answered with the softness of a teacher talking to a student who had just given the correct answer to a problem.

(Dran, first, there will undoubtedly be a struggle between the four major powers: the Princess Asteria faction, the Grand Duke Linosart faction, the Anti-Empire faction, and the Arkrest Kingdom.

Bern Village will not be expected to play an active role in the front lines, nor to provide support from the rear, but there is a good chance that you, along with me and Selina, will be requested because of our power as individuals. But I don’t think they would expect us to be as strong as Merle, though.)

(The Arc Witch’s name is famous as the strongest Grand Mage in all the surrounding countries, but as a human being, I’ve always acted as if I am nowhere near her level.

It’s just that I’m worried that if Merle lets slip the results of our duel where she tested my skills, I’ll start losing my own freedom to act as I wish.

At the time, I thought it would be a good idea to defeat Merle, but I didn’t expect things to come to this. I don’t know whether to call this a strange coincidence, or an unfortunate one.)

I don’t regret it, but I hope I will be forgiven for laughing bitterly a little at my troubles. It’s Dramina who I’m talking to, so maybe she’ll be kind? Dramina likely knows exactly what I’m going through.

(At any rate, you sure are a strange one. You would face an evil god without feeling nervous or intimidated, but as soon as you find yourself dealing with a human, then you start frowning. Even though normally, it’s the opposite)

(The time I’ve spent as a human is overwhelmingly short compared to the time I lived as an Ancient Celestial Dragon, so I’ve analyzed that the reason is because of that lack of experience as a human.

But there was no problem during the time that I spent at the village. After all, I always relied on Selina and you)

When I said that I relied on her so frankly, it was clear, even through telepathy, that Dramina was happy.

(Fufu, there are very few opportunities where I can be relied on by you. I will do my best to be of use to you.

But returning back to the topic at hand, whether or not you are called upon, it will probably happen some time after war has broken, after the kingdom sends the military to intervene with the empire’s civil war)

(Fumu, from the kingdom’s point of view, since their biggest potential enemy nation is weakening their power due to fighting amongst their own people, it’s only natural that the kingdom would want to leave it alone for as long as they can, and then swoop in to snatch the best parts at the right timing)

As the old saying goes, the one who lies in wait shall catch the fish. I hope we don’t get too greedy and hurt ourselves, but it has been a long time since the kingdom was last in a national-scale war.

I’m sure they have been preparing for this ever since the emperor’s health began to deteriorate, but I wonder how far things will proceed as planned.

I put myself in the kingdom’s shoes, and tell Dramina what I think about the strategy against the empire. I wonder how Dramina, a former queen of a nation, would evaluate my ideas, which came from a human brain.

(The kingdom is not yet thinking about conquering the entire empire. They still have the demi-humans in the south to worry about, and if they do conquer the whole empire, then they will have to worry about the relations with the countries west of the empire as well.

Whether it’s the princess or the Grand Duke, I think they’ll let one of them live in the western part of the empire, with just enough military power so as not to be a threat, or they could make their current goal be to set up a puppet government in the meantime, perhaps?

In particular, the Anti-Empire demi-humans in the southern part of the empire are all lumped together as “demi-humans,” but they consist of many different beast races, giants, and other species, each with different values, ethics, and histories. Their goals for uprising and rebelling are definitely not all the same)

(So, Dran, you think that it would be too much of a disadvantage if those people are included as part of the kingdom.

If they, who were forced unwillingly under the rule of the empire, were to be freed from it, only to find themselves once again subject to a new ruler, albeit a peaceful and friendly one, that would be unacceptable.

Most likely, no, undoubtedly, there will be further disagreements among them, and even after they gain independence from the empire, there will be another internal struggle. Unless there is one or more people who could take command as a good leader, and be the glue between all the different groups)

Fumu, so Dramina was also thinking that the kingdom is not targeting the entire empire in this conflict.

Considering the emotions of the empire’s people, it would probably be a little easier to govern them if they invade after the war, when their hearts are still in disarray from the conflict, and their patriotism and loyalty to the empire is waning.

Depending on the circumstances, the divided parts of the nation might even temporarily fight together, in the name of being Anti-Arkrest Kingdom, and there is a possibility their positions and stances may even change.

With this in mind, the kingdom’s strategy for now is to fan the flames a bit, and then leave it alone and watch to see how things proceed from there.

As I was starting to fully realize that the world of politics is not as clearly black and white as it seems, Selina and Diadora, who had been silently listening to Dramina and I talk, interrupted.

It seems I got so absorbed in my conversation with Dramina, I ended up ignoring the two of them for too long. I just got a little too heated.

(Dran, Dramina, I understand you’re absorbed in your conversation, but don’t leave us out of it please.

I know it’s an important conversation about the future, but we’ll be sad if you leave us alone.)

I could imagine Selina inside the carriage, with her brows furrowed in sadness, and I had to resist the urge to change my facial expression, since I was in the middle of working as a guard.

(Ah, Selina, please excuse me. Due to my past experiences, I ended up speaking too much. Also, it’s not often that Dran comes to me for advice, so I got carried away.)

(It’s true that talk of politics is a little too difficult for me, but there is no need to get that engrossed in conversation.

But the Romal Empire, it’s a place that is the opposite of what Dran and Christina are trying to create in Bern Village)

It can certainly be said that the current Romal Empire is the exact opposite of Bern Village, where multiple races coexist and prosper together, just as Christina and I envisioned.

Selina’s hometown was made up of lamia and men of many different races, so this must be her first time going to a place like the Romal empire, where racist ideologies between the different races are prevalent.

Based on my experiences from my past life, I understood that discrimination is a common thing, but will this be a trip that will make Selina see things that are not good for her?

While I was pondering whether I should once again tell Selina to prepare herself now for what she might see, Diadora opened her mouth to tease Selina, as if she were her younger sister.

(That’s right, we’ll surely be troubled, especially if Dran doesn’t get those marriage laws fixed soon. As things are now, we can only be unofficially married.

Also, there’s no reason to hurry with Dramina or I, but that won’t do with Selina’s circumstances.

It will be more convincing to explain to her parents if you can tell them you have a proper marriage relationship)

When Diadora pointed that out, I heard Selina giving out a small huff of shame, and it was easy to imagine her wiggling her tail in agony.

Right, in the beginning Selina was on a mission to find a spouse and take me back to her hometown, but since she met me, she has chosen to stay in Bern Village instead.

She could also stay in Bern Village without saying anything to her parents, but in order to have positive exchanges with Bern Village, we want to become legally married, and become the first example of coexistence in order to convince her parents and friends back in her hometown.

In order for me to visit Selina’s parents as soon as possible, I have to progress the talks about the legislation system with Christina when she is newly appointed to Bern Village.

Even leaving out my marriage, in terms of how the current law stands, the safety of Selina and Dramina is not yet guaranteed.

Lamias, and harpies, of which my brother Marco’s lover is one, are not even considered as demi-humans, but as monsters, so in the most extreme case, I wouldn’t be able to even complain if they are suddenly slashed down.

If there was an incident where some adventurer or mercenary were to attack a lamia simply because she is a monster, the residents and soldiers of Bern Village would have to first create legal grounds to be able to either persuade the adventurer, or beat him up and restrain him.

(It is as you say, Diadora, but that isn’t something we can make happen here even if we talk about it. You only said that because you want to tease me, didn’t you?)

(Fufu, well, although it is a necessary conversation, perhaps it may still be too early, as Selina says. But it’s okay to dream.

I know I said I don’t really care about titles such as wife or lover, but it’ll be nice to be able to proudly say that I am Dran’s wife someday.)

(Fumu, the conversation’s taken an embarrassing turn, but if I can also proudly say that you all are my wives, then there will be nothing better than that.)

Thanks for the meagerness that our Alphapolis overlords allow us to read.

I talked mostly through telekinesis with Dramina about the future of the empire <- telepathy; weird that this is the only instance of it being wrong.
    tele: distant
    pathos: feeling
    kinetos: movement
telepathy: transmission of feelings, thoughts or sensations at a distance
telekinesis: movement of something from a distance, without direct contact
