Chapter 223

Quinn, who had fallen asleep on top of the blanket she’d laid out on the ground, was left there alone, while Dreissen stood shoulder to shoulder with Luskrow, deciding to watch over the Harvest Festival from a high vantage point.

As always, Beginala kept a close eye on the adventurers on the frontlines, the team of medics, temple officials, and doctors in the rear, the merchants ready to buy materials immediately, and the city knights who had set themselves up in the perimeter just in case of an emergency.

There are a few things here and there that can’t be put to use from the labyrinth that Dreissen and the others plan to utilize, but there’s still more than enough time to learn more.

As the cloud of dust grew ever clearer, and the sound of footsteps and buzzing wind spirits from the earth shaking with the presence of countless fire spirits grew louder, the many adventurers became increasingly nervous.

Even from the eyes of an outsider, the difference between those who were experienced with the Harvest Festival, and those who weren’t, was obvious.

Luskrow took a telescope out of the tool bag hanging from his waist, and looked out at the crowd of labyrinth monsters that were creating that cloud of dust, as he casually opened his mouth to speak.

「Hey, hey, they’re almost here. The monsters from Vasharkan’s Mercy have cores of spiritual fire power, so of the three labyrinths, it’s the one where the power of water has the biggest advantage.

The natures of the other two are more substantial than spiritual, so even without the power of water, physical attacks will do just fine. But, in a case like this, there are other things that need to be kept in mind. Do you understand?」

「So Jambordai and Lu Volta are enemies then. Of course that would have an effect on the monsters that come from their labyrinths. I can see them fighting each other as they make their way here」

Just as Dreissen said, the monsters from Jambordai and Lu Vota were attacking each other on their way here, steadily reducing their own numbers.

「As expected of your sharp eyes. Well, those monsters from Jambordai will probably make their way here, but in the meantime, their fighting will end up weakening them.

When the Harvest Festival includes multiple labyrinths like it does now, you need to consider the compatibility and relationships between each of the labyrinths.

For example, if there were two monsters of around the same stature, the follower of Jambordai would be targeted more often by the Lu Volta ones, and likewise, they would be less likely to be targeted by the Jambordai monsters」

「So that’s how it is. It was kind of the same back in my hometown too, but it wasn’t quite as serious as it is here」

The labyrinths at Dreissen’s hometown are a patchwork of labyrinths, facilities, and natural environments created by a large number of gods under a Great Evil God, so the complex relationships and affinities between those gods must be even more complicated than the ones here in Mazelinth.

That is why they have been reorganizing the interior, and they entrusted the management of the labyrinths to the Drag-Succubi.

As Dreissen and Luskrow spoke about their thoughts of the Harvest Festival and kept on talking, the battle began on the frontlines, where the defensive line created by the adventurers was.

Hanma and Dowben had moved to be over there, but Dreissen and even Luskrow as well were not worried about the two of them.

The ones in charge at the frontlines were the intermediate adventurers who were just about starting to break past novice level, as well as the actual intermediate and advanced adventurers who were there for assistance in case there was trouble.

The one thing that the beginners learn from their seniors here is that the monsters outside of the labyrinths act differently from the ones inside the labyrinth.

There are plenty of examples of adventurers who decided it would be fine to treat all of the monsters the same way, but they traded major injuries, one of their limbs, or even their own lives in exchange for their carelessness.

That’s why most of the beginners, even against labyrinth monsters that they’ve already fought many times before, were nervous and tense as they gripped their weapons in their hands tightly.

A song sung by a mix of male and female singers resounded from slightly behind them.

It was a song that brought the listeners’ spirits to a state of calmness, allowing them to demonstrate their full abilities without getting caught up in the excitement or madness of the battlefield, or getting swallowed up by their fear or anxiety.

It was a holy magic possessed by the gods of many factions, but bards can also play magical songs and music that have similar effects. Spirit users can also create the same effect by using spirits on their minds, providing multiple layers of support to themselves.

Those who have fought inside the labyrinth many times, but were excessively nervous about fighting outside of it for the first time, had their minds turned into those of historical warriors as they used spirits and holy magic and songs to become completely calm.

At the rear of the defensive line, the city knights had deployed many cannons, but their destructive power was too strong and would blast away the labyrinth monsters without leaving a trace, so raw materials couldn’t be obtained if they were used. That’s why they were only there as an insurance policy, in case the defensive line was about to be breached.

Therefore, the first moves were made by the defensive lines, as individual adventurers fired their magic, arrows, and some bullets as well.

By now, the figures of the monsters that were single-mindedly aiming to take the lives of the adventurers and the inhabitants of Mazelinth behind them could be seen clearly. Except for the spirit-type labyrinth monsters called Elementalia, the rest of the monsters possessed tremendous power.

If it weren’t for the morale boosting holy magic used beforehand, several of the adventurers would have run away on the spot, and a considerable number of them probably would have been too scared to use their abilities to the fullest.

Whether the monsters were hit by the long-distance attacks and died, or if they were trampled mercilessly by the fast follow-up attacks, their bodies turned into lumps of crushed flesh.

As the distance between them and the adventurers grew smaller, the labyrinth monsters gradually spread out to the sides, and they shifted the focus of their killing intent toward the prey each of them had set their sights on.

The long-distance attacks, consisting of magic, arrows, and some bullets, still continued, but finally, the first of the labyrinth monsters collided with the large shields and fortifications at the frontlines, and plunged into the long spears lined up and waiting for them in trenches and behind earthen walls made with earth magic, as if unafraid of dying.

「They’re here, hold the line!!」

Who was the one who gave out that first order? That is not important. What was important was that the order cut the thread of restraint that was holding the adventurers back from fighting to the edges of their limits.

They raised their weapons protected by the magic and blessings of water gods and spirits, and as one, all the adventurers swarmed across the land toward the fire labyrinth monsters that were shooting out flames of high heat.

They were the Fire Elementalia, taking the form of fist-sized red spheres with blazing flames burning in their centers.

The ones with bright red burning fur, and claws and fangs like rubies were the Red Hot Wolves.

With bodies like polished stone covered in swirling patterns of flame, and longswords and axes in each of its four arms was a deformed humanoid being, known as the Guardians of the Flaming Blade.

In addition to these, there were numerous types of labyrinth monsters, such as bats, hawks, giant lizards, bears, various other kinds of giant creatures, and full-scale battle with the adventurers finally began.

The labyrinth monsters, possessing the attribute of fire, released scorching fire breaths and flaming bullets, and their sharp claws and tails like blunt weapons slammed into the adventurers one after another.

Thanks to the tens of hundreds of support magic spells and the carefully prepared equipment and knowledge, the adventurers were not intimidated by the thousands of labyrinth monsters, and instead challenged them bravely, jumping on them, cleaving their bodies, and piercing their hearts one after another.

Even though the monster had magic power that was more extravagant than that which would belong to a small country, the adventurers fought like heroes from a fairy tale — although their individual abilities aren’t good enough to call them heroes — and in response, Dreissen let out a sigh of admiration.

「As expected, the effects of mental strengthening are immense. Even someone who’s never held a weapon before could become a warrior with their mental state strengthened.

As you said, Mr. Luskrow, the labyrinth monsters are prioritizing fighting human enemies instead of fighting each other, but it looks like there’s no end to them」

「Wow, the scale’s a lot bigger than I remember ever seeing in recent years」

Glancing sideways at Luskrow stroking his chin in thought, Dreissen swallowed the words that he could never let anyone else hear, that he’s already beaten Jambordai and Lu Volta before, so they aren’t anything special.

This means that in this area without the interference of the creators of the labyrinths, the functionality of each of the labyrinths was disrupted, or they just simply happened to be present during the period of mass outbreaks.

「I hope that it isn’t our fault, though」

「Now then, there are more of them than we expected, but their strength itself is still within our expectations, but… Hmm, Dreissen, Quinn, Beginala, what do you think? Want to try fighting on the frontlines? Well, there’s no hurry either, if anything, I like to take it easy」

The one who responded to Luskrow’s words was Beginala, who was checking the positioning of the city knights in the rearguard. As she put away her set of papers and writing tools into her bag, she reached her left hand to grip the sword at her waist firmly.

「You want to take it easy even though we’re going to the frontlines? That does not sound like we would be much help, does it?」

「In terms of your track record of achievements, you guys are still beginners, but in terms of actual ability and money, you’re in the advanced or special class, no matter what anyone else thinks.

And if you step in while everyone’s harvesting materials, or try to force yourself into the battle, then the others won’t be happy. So I’m suggesting we read the atmosphere in the frontlines, and just take it easy until something a little more dangerous shows up. What do you think?」

「There is nothing better than being able to feel the fresh air of the frontlines on your skin, even if it’s just from within visible distance. I do not mind. But I was thinking we should ask Miss Quinn for her opinion as well」

Upon hearing the name of the most dangerous person of the group who was the most likely to go on a rampage, Luskrow agreed and turned his gaze toward Quinn, who was lying on top of the blanket.

Perhaps because she was now the topic of the conversation, Quinn rose from the blanket, and returned to her usual attitude of seeing everything else in this world as beneath her.

By the way, this attitude did not particularly contain any contempt or anything. She simply classified everything as above or below, and since she judges herself as above, the rest are just below her, but it wasn’t like she thought those below her had zero value.

「I don’t think I would willingly join in a fight with those people. At best, I would only watch them as they fight desperately for their next meal. Besides, Hanma is there hanging around on the frontlines, so there won’t be any deaths, let alone injuries」

「No deaths, you say, that’s an amazing statement, but if it’s Hanma, somehow it’s convincing. She’s super popular with the churches of the Mairahl Order.

It can’t be denied there’s a rumor going around that everyone from ordinary believers to high priests at the top like talking with her」

Dreissen and the others, who knew Hanma’s true nature, agreed wholeheartedly that this was true, but if they were to say it aloud here where other people could hear them, it could cause a problem big enough to make them forget about the Harvest Festival, even if their authenticity was in doubt.

「Our priest is a big deal. Her compassion is a little too deep, so she ends up being really popular」

「Is it an unnecessary burden for you all, who will be leaving Mazelinth soon?」

「I can’t say something like that for sure, but it will certainly make leaving this place harder for us. Now then, let’s go, and take it easy」

Finally, the strongest adventurer party in Mazelinth, or in the world, was ready to go.
