Chapter 225 — Part 3

As we made our way toward Mores mountains, we approached a landscape of rocks dotted with greenery. This was the dark wilderness, expanding in our vision as an increasing number of living creatures came into sight.

The foot of Mores mountains was a deep forest connected to Ente forest. Numerous rivers and an abundance of underground streams flowed from the mountains, offering a rich terrain for countless lifeforms to thrive.

When Selina had left Jarla, she had headed for the nearest human settlement—Bern village—by traversing the dark wilderness. She had met me when she had been taking a break at the Lizardmen’s swamp. Our current journey was a retracing of her steps. With the possible outbreak of war in mind, it would certainly be ideal to have at least one fort between the swamp and Mores mountains.

Fumun…

In the forested area at the foot of Mores mountains, there were local Wood Elves and Beastmen awaiting our arrival through Ente forest. Once we arrived, they kindly guided us on our way. The authorization of Ente-Yggdrasil clearly had quite a hold over the residents of Ente forest, and I was determined not to disappoint Ente’s expectations and trust.

However, the delegation’s members saw this reception as the perfect chance to have a conversation with others. The fact that there were a number of women among the guides served to be an even greater motivation for chitchat. Neogio ended up yelling and shaking his fists several times, but it was an overall pleasant experience.

The path to Mores mountains through the forest was rough, with little traces of people passing through. The route to the lake where the Lizardmen had moved to was more established. A former delegation had traveled through that path, and the roads were more well-formed to some extent. Lizardmen even maintained the roads, unlike the path to Jarla which was completely untrodden.

After all, Jarla was a hidden village designed to escape the detection of other races. Even the route into the village had been created to deceive the eyes of others, making it hard to tell that the village even existed.

The bare mountain path was more rocks than soil. As the horse golems pulled along the carriages on this treacherous path, the soldiers followed after them while panting heavily. The party slowed down their pace for those who were falling behind and took appropriate breaks. As a result, it was hard for us to move along quickly.

We stopped at a spot close to Jarla and raised a hill on a suitable open area. After that, Neogio and Sumaru were left in charge of the delegation, while Selina and I continued on.

「It would be hard to descend such a perilous mountain path.」

「Well, only a spot like this would be suitable to keep away from others. I grew up here, so it doesn’t bother me.」

「Finding partners would definitely be tough for you folks.」

「The population of the village has been increasing lately, so some ladies find partners within the village. Though, it’s not ideal to find someone too closely related by blood, so there are still many who venture out to seek a partner like me.」

「Was it only a thousand people? When I first met you, their population was about three times that of Bern village. Such an increase is quite a feat for a village like Jarla. I’m sure there are many hidden villages scattered in the world. I’m wondering if you interact with villages in the vicinity.」

「Hm… I’m sure there are other Lamia and Snakemen villages in Ente forest, and representatives communicate once every few years. In any case, these places are likely closed communities. There is quite a bit of information only the queen is allowed to know.」

「It’s less likely for important information to be leaked if fewer people are in the know. Such a decision is only natural as a cautionary measure. Let’s just hope that our visit will proceed smoothly…」

「Don’t worry. I will do my best to relate the many benefits of interacting with the barony of Bern. After all, the people of Bern village and the region of Galois have gotten used to seeing a Lamia in the streets. At most, they’ll just be shocked for the moment. I didn’t live in Galois for close to a year just for show!」

「If Lamias were to strut about without a care, shock wouldn’t be enough to describe the reactions of those in Bern village and Galois. We’ll need time, but we should probably focus on spreading the notion that interaction with Bern village has been established.」

「It can’t be helped. Haste only makes waste. After all, there are Lamias who still practice rather terrifying traditions.」

「There are tons of heinous humans as well. It’s the same. That being said, it’s about time we proceed with the meeting.」

When the delegation arrived at the foot of the mountains, dozens of snakes were already hiding in the rocks. They were not only watching Selina and me, but they had their eyes fixated on the entire party.

I could easily imagine that they had been waiting all day for us to arrive after Selina’s message had reached them. If things went well, there would no longer be any need for Lamia ladies to leave their hidden village and risk their lives to find a partner. In the worst case, there was a possibility of subjugation or persecution of Lamias as magical beasts.

Moreover, it was an assessment of whether Selina had been manipulated to reveal the location of Jarla, or whether she was truly my partner, returning to promote a relationship with Bern village as per her message.

Fumun.

As time passed, I felt the presence of these surveilling snakes vanish. Perhaps it was about time real folks started to appear. I confirmed my suspicions once we walked around a red rock that Selina pointed out to be a landmark.

The entrance to Jarla was hidden behind a number of boulders and protrusions from the mountain path. Before it, several Lamias were waiting to receive us. A few beastmen and humans were part of the group, evidently the partners of Lamias or children of such interracial couples. Daughters were always Lamias, while sons always took on the race of their fathers. Such an occurrence was simply the makeup of Lamias as a race.

There were some bearing swords, but they were all dressed like Selina and me, in clothes meant for hiking rather than combat. The Lamias who stood before us had hair and scales of bright red and dazzling blue, though every single one of them was stunningly beautiful.

Lamias were generally gorgeous in appearance to attract the males of other species, especially humans and demi-humans who made up a majority of the world’s population. Among this group of attractive ladies, the one standing in the middle had the same dark green scales as Selina. Her long blonde hair framed her face, and her blue eyes conveyed a strong confidence. For some reason, she shared many similarities with Selina.

Most of the Lamias waiting for us seeming acquainted with Selina, and I could feel her anxiety radiating from beside me despite her composed demeanor. Perhaps this lady was a relative, or even the queen of Jarla.

「Thank you for traveling the long distance from Bern village to Jarla. I’m Queen Seribea of Jarla, and the mother of Selina, who is with you. I’m pleased to make your acquaintance.」

This mere greeting set her apart from Selina. Her words were conveyed with a full grasp of Lamia charms, and their hold over the opposite sex.

There was not a single trace of motherliness on Queen Seribea’s face as she spoke as a representative of Jarla. Selina, too, held back her desire to speak. In public, Queen Seribea and Selina could not converse as mother and daughter. Clearly, there was a need to get things moving quickly.

「My name is Dran, the aide to Baroness Christina Maxis Almadia of the barony of Bern and a representative of the barony.」

「I know your name and the purpose of your visit from Selina’s message. Let me show you around our village first.」

With a slight rustling of scales and the sound of scraping on the ground, Queen Seribea turned her back to us. The rest of the Lamias present followed suit.

As Selina stared at her mother’s back, she seemed eager to say something. Yet, Queen Seribea did not turn back to face us. Despite the uncertain glances from the rest of the Lamias, both Selina and Queen Seribea played their roles as representatives of their respective parties. Personal feelings had to be suppressed appropriately on such an occasion.
