Chapter 248

Several days after Lenia and her schoolmates returned to Galois Magic Academy after completing their training in Bern, they found themselves in the royal city of Aleklaftia. This was the land that the adventurer who founded Arkrest Kingdom centuries ago had designated as the heart of the kingdom.

The royal castle, the symbol of the kingdom, was built in this city, and the appearance of the castle had altered with the times through repeated expansion and reconstruction. This very place was the residence of successive kings.

The royal family of the noblest lineage in Arkest Kingdom resided in a small segment of the castle. A luscious garden was tended to daily by gardeners of the most exquisite skill and upbringing without fail. A group of girls happened to be in this garden filled with greenery.

Stone pathways and narrow waterways intersected like a labyrinth, while the garden was delicately landscaped with green trees and seasonal flowers; it was a sight that could be called a work of art. Presently, three individuals could be seen in this garden.

In an elegant pavilion erected beside a small artificial pond formed by drawing water from an underground stream, a female Caninein in a dark green dress and a Fox-tribe woman dressed in a male attire could be seen. The latter was donning a shimmering silk shirt with a red jacket over it. With them was a human woman in a pale yellow dress that embodied the very concept of fragility. She looked as if she would wither away at any moment without someone else’s protection.

There was a strange tension in the air between the three of them, as though they were in the midst of an argument. The Fox-tribe woman was defending the Caninein with the most dignified expression she could muster. When she spoke to the human lady, her words were barbed and bold.

The Caninein that was being shielded by the Fox-tribe woman did not seem to notice the latter’s impertinence. Perhaps she was just doing her best to play the part of a timid woman hiding behind her dependable lover. Despite her efforts in this farce, she appeared to be pulling off her role clumsily.

「Amria, I’m calling off my marriage engagement with you today!」

Amria, who had just been denounced by the Fox-tribe woman, flicked open the fan in her hand to cover her mouth. She swiftly narrowed her eyes and tried her best to make herself sound like a vicious shrew.

「Goodness, am I hearing things now? Fuuko-sama, there’s a time and place for your antics…」

「This isn’t a joke. Amria, our marriage has been arranged by our families since childhood. I have put up with you for the sake of my parents’ dignity and my family’s reputation, but your past behavior is beyond reproach. Your arrogance puts your family to shame. Servants aren’t the only people you treat inhumanly. You don’t even think of your fellow schoolmates as human beings. Moreover, you’ve made numerous false accusations against me, your fiancé.」

Clearly, this was a scene set in the garden of an academy meant for aristocratic descendants. These three were probably not the only ones present in this scene. Other students and teachers were likely meant to be with them.

「I’m aware of the weight of the family name I bear as an aristocrat, and I was trying to behave accordingly. It is truly unfortunate that you see my demeanor as arrogance. Besides, when have I treated you as less than human? Fuuko-sama, I would like to add that this is not just a place of learning, but a place for young aristocrats who will be responsible for the future of the kingdom’s governance. It is necessary to forge relationships with each other, taking into consideration the other party’s lineage, territorial relationships, factions, and many other factors. Unfortunately, there are certain people who fail to grasp this, and I’ve already offered a clear warning. If you think that I’m not treating them humanely, I will take offense at that. I’ve tried to explain to them in all sincerity that their behavior is unbecoming of an aristocrat, and they need to consider their actions more seriously.」

Fuuko’s acting might be sloppy and unpolished, but Amria was extremely convincing in her role. She had immersed herself in the world of books during her house arrest, and this may have been the result of her emotional projection onto those fictional characters.

Yachiyo and Fuuko were so taken by Amria’s brilliant acting that they even whimpered pitifully from time to time. They had not changed a single bit ever since Dran’s first meeting with them.

「Y-You just have a smart mouth, Amria. All you have are these petty tricks. If you honestly admit your wrongs and declare that you’d spend the rest of your life atoning for them, I would’ve been more inclined to extend my kindness to you. Your outrageous and unjust treatment of Yachiyo makes you even more unforgivable. Is it because she’s the daughter of a mere baron? Did it bother you that her innocence makes her likable by many? Or are you displeased that I’m attracted to her?! Your insidious harassment of Yachiyo, and your cruel words and deeds have made you despicable and unworthy of being my fiancée! Hence, I will be breaking off my engagement to you!」

「Amria-sama, please break off the engagement and admit your mistakes. Fuuko-sama, if she does so, please extend your benevolence to her and make sure nothing terrible befalls her.」

Yachiyo admonished Amria in a tone that sounded more appropriate than Fuuko’s earlier speech. As she spoke, Fuuko turned to face her and wrapped her in a gentle embrace. In a sense, these two had chosen true love after rejecting the heartless fiancée who was consumed by the flames of jealousy.

「Oh, Yachiyo, you are too kind to Amria even after her behavior toward you. Your kindness has saved me. Please continue to stay by my side, as lovely as a blooming flower in the fields and as beautiful as the bright moon in the night sky!」

「Fuuko-sama!」

「Yachiyo!」

Sperion, the crown prince of Arkrest Kingdom gazed at the two calling out each other’s names and holding each other tightly. From the table he was at a short distance away, he let out a comment as he recalled fond memories of the past.

「Isn’t that the “true love game” that was popular when we were young? Well, that brings back memories. Though, Fuuko is a little… Hm, well, a little stiff, but Amria and Yachiyo are pretty good with their roles.」
