Chapter 250 — Part 1

Romaldia, the imperial capital of the Romal Empire.

This was one of the largest cities on the continent, built with the labor, blood, and sacrifices of many non-Romal citizens of varying races. It has been under the rule of its first regent, Grand Duke Linosart, since the outbreak of the competition for the throne between Princess Asteria and Grand Duke Linosart.

The Romal Empire was presently in a constant state of turmoil, especially due to the conflicts with the non-ruling class in the South. Under these circumstances, a stone had been thrown that would drastically change the trajectory of this existing storm.

Hausen, the first of the Twelve Wing Generals, had finally pledged himself to the military command of Grand Duke Linosart. This was the very change that affected the lives of the empire’s citizens immensely.

This man had sworn allegiance only to generations of emperors, and the individual he acknowledged was recognized by nobles and commoners alike to be the true emperor of Romal. There were even rumors that Hausen was the true ruler of the empire.

Since the founding of the Romal Empire, Hausen had been a selfless protector of the imperial family and the nation. He was recognized as a special figure due to his long service to the first emperor until this day. He had been acknowledged as the greatest guardian of the empire since the first emperor to the recently deceased Emperor Guispar.

There was a great deal of speculation that Hausen was an immortal who had lived for centuries, that he had been replaced by clones, or that he was using special methods to prolong his life. However, the truth was only known to Hausen and the empire’s rulers.

Presently, Linosart was gazing up at the emperor’s throne—the most valuable seat in the empire—from ten steps below. His trusted aide, the clairvoyant Aiza, was by his side and facing Hausen.

There were no other people in the audience chamber except for this trio. Outside the room, the imperial guards commanded by Hausen and Linosart’s knights were waiting.

Hausen was a burly man whose face was covered by a red helmet. A horn extended from his forehead, and his entire body was covered by an armor of the same red color. An ankle-length cloak of deep indigo covered his suit of armor. A single glance by this man would no doubt send one trembling with the thought of impending doom.

No matter who Hausen was facing, he never removed his helmet and armor. Even the emperor was no exception, and none of the emperors knew the true face under this ominous red appearance.

Hausen did not kneel before Linosart, whom he should respect as his lord. Instead, he continued to behave in the same manner as when Linosart had first saw him as a child. Aiza did not reprimand Hausen for his attitude. Rather, under the white cloth covering Aiza’s face, she had a curious expression as she wondered what face he was making.

「Hausen, are you sure… you aren’t bothered… by the conflict between the grand duke and the princess?」

Aiza’s question was characterized by short word breaks. In response, Hausen directed his golden eyes toward Aiza. There was neither hostility nor fondness in his cold gaze.

「I only recognize the emperor of the Romal Empire as my master. If one is not the emperor, then they must prove themselves worthy of being my master in accordance with the regulations. The grand duke has attained the title of my master through the latter means. Princess Asteria is not yet the emperor and has not proven herself to be my master. Hence, I recognize the grand duke as my master.」

Hauser’s muffled voice resonated from beneath his helmet, but all semblance of emotion had been erased from his gruff and deep masculine voice.

Aiza did not seem particularly offended and replied in a manner that sounded terribly faltering for someone unfamiliar with her manner of speech.

「I… see. You aren’t… someone who lies. That’s why… I believe you.」

「I’m faithful to the reason for my existence. Beyond this that has been given to me, I have nothing else. Trust isn’t something to expect from me.」

「This warning… itself… has earned my trust.」

「…」

Linosart was amused to see Hausen at a loss for words after hearing Aiza’s reply. After all, Hausen was considered the greatest authority figure in the empire. Linosart reckoned that a rather interesting combination of people had fallen unexpectedly into his hands, and these two were too capable to be treated as mere jesters.

「Aiza, Hausen has no regard for my abilities or my character. He makes his judgment based on the emperor’s title and the fulfillment of specific procedures. As he mentioned, it’ll be difficult for him to develop any trust.」

「I see.」

「Hm, well, you’re good as you are. Hausen, I’ll be taking possession of the other niece left by your elder brother, so make sure you stay put.」

「Understood. Princess Amria is qualified to be the emperor, but she isn’t the emperor. There isn’t enough reason for me to take action.」

「In that case, if I give orders to capture Amria, will you and your men make a move?」

「We won’t. I will not interfere in the struggle between the imperial families. Even though my duty is to protect the revered emperor, the imperial capital, and the empire, I will not intervene in the dispute between the grand duke and Princess Asteria and Amria. The only exceptions are emergencies such as the invasion by foreign enemies. Currently, I will only receive orders from the grand duke related to the elimination of invaders. There are some orders I will refuse, even if they come from my master.」

「Goodness, what a rigid fellow. That’s why you’re so easy to deal with. If that’s how it is, do as I’ve said. The instability we’ve caused is an opportunity for you to focus on eliminating the fools who seek to devour the empire.」

「Understood, my newest master.」

Hausen’s deep, muffled reply were satisfactory to elicit a nod from Linosart. With that, Linosart turned his predatory eyes to Aiza beside him.

「Aiza, where are the whereabouts of Amria? Can you see past the shielding magic of the Arc Witch and the magic users of Arkrest Kingdom?」

「There… aren’t any problems. I can’t see as clearly as though… I’m right next to her, but… I know where she… and those girls guarding her are. The prince and the princess… seem to be leaving the royal city… together. Maybe they are… planning to take her somewhere… to help them escape.」

In the eyes hidden by the white cloth, a reflection of Amria and her companions appeared. They were presently leaving the royal castle of Arkrest Kingdom, a place strongly fortified by magic. Aiza was proudly known for those clairvoyant eyes that could reach thousand of miles away. When it came to reconnaissance, Aiza alone could match the efforts of hundreds, thousand, or even more people.

「I guess the Twelve Wing Generals can’t be put into action carelessly. Mobilize all spies in the kingdom and try to take custody of Amria. Aiza, keep me informed of Amria’s movements.」

「Understood. What about… Princess Asteria?」

「Now that Hausen is with us, she will have no choice but to make a move. The reports from the spies are enough. We don’t need your eyes for this, so save your efforts. Amria should be well guarded. Be careful not to overexert those eyes of yours.」

Aiza nodded her head like a child. Linosart acknowledged her response and pondered over the new storm he was about to unleash on the empire.

Compared to Asteria and Amria, Linosart was probably far superior when it came to his arrogance and conviction that he would be the one to steer the empire’s future.

Dran and his companions had already been informed of the visit by Sperion and his party, along with Amria.

The Romal Empire was known for their scheming ways, with a long history of conspiracies and plotting. Dran and his friends were certain that spies had already infiltrated the barony of Bern, and were working to reap the fruits of their reconnaissance efforts. They even expected more agents to sneak into Bern in the future.

The route from the royal capital to Galois was beyond the responsibility of Dran and the rest of Bern. However, once Sperion’s party entered the barony of Bern from Galois, Dran and his folks were responsible for the safety of Amria and her companions. As a result, Lynette was particularly excited, driven by her desire to do something useful for Dran.

The proof of Lynette’s eagerness was her pivotal role in capturing suspicious people trying to enter Bern through illegal means via the forest between Galois and Bern. With Lynette were her current subordinates, Kyrlinne and Gundeus.

It was obvious to all of Bern’s leaders that things were about to get rowdy in and around the territory. Lynette merely took the initiative to weed out, or rather exterminate, those who were acting suspiciously as part of her duties as a member of Bern’s Raider Knights.
