Chapter 251 — Part 2

While the barony of Bern was tidying up its own territory, the entourage from the royal city—Sperion, Frau, Amria, Yachiyo, and Fuuko—enjoyed their journey via air in an aircraft. They had disembarked at the port town of Wargrail near Galois and continued on land.

The group was led by knights holding a banner with the royal coat of arms on it. Sperion and his companions were in an opulent and gigantic carriage pulled by eight horses, and this carriage was positioned slightly to the rear of the party. From the knights on horseback and foot soldiers to the maids and servants, there were a total of close to a hundred people.

The royal family’s inspections—or so-called excursions—in other territories were a great honor for the hosting lands, but the latter often had to bore the heavy responsibility of any potential mishaps befalling the royalty in their territory. Moreover, there was also the fear of being criticized for inadequate governance, and these host territories could not simply be delighted by such arrivals.

The route to the barony of Bern included passage through the Governor-General’s office of Galois. They, too, were under the direct governance of the royal family, and even the short stay by Sperion and his party there was a hefty burden for the office’s personnel.

After the Governor-General of Galois and the other rulers in Galois had their audience with Sperion, the carriage with the crown prince headed down the road leading to the barony of Bern. Only then did a sudden thought pop into Sperion’s mind about the reactions of Dran and his companions, which led him to speak up.

「I wonder what Dran and his friends would think when they see us. Will they find us a hassle just like when we first met, or will they welcome us with open arms?」

The carriage was adorned with luxurious furnishings fit for royalty. Within this lavish environment sat Sperion who had just spoken, Frau, Amria, Yachiyo, and Fuuko. Shald and Radia, knights dedicated to the service of this party, were on horseback on either side of the carriage.

Yachiyo was the one who responded to Sperion’s mutterings.

Frau was usually the one who answered any attempts by Sperion to initiate conversation since she was his younger sister and part of the royal family as well. However, she had little interaction with Dran despite her close ties with Christina, and it was hard for her to reply so quickly.

「I’m sure that Dran will offer you due respect, along with a subtle but sharp rebuke. But I’m sure that Lady Christina and the rest will welcome Your Highnesses enthusiastically. They are gracious folks, and they sure hold rather interesting opinions!」

Yachiyo was in a pair of trousers made of a much finer fabric than the piece she wore when she had first met Sperion and the rest. Her deep indigo trousers were paired with a white fabric of scattered cherry blossom petals, while her favorite pair of long and short swords were at her waist.

Fuuko sat on the other side of Amria, who was between her and Yachiyo, and donned the same military uniform as the female knights of Arkrest Kingdom likely for ease of movement. The only difference was the kuina, steel spikes, and dagger at her waist.

Ever since their meeting with Dran and his friends, both of them had become rather capable, or perhaps not that capable but certainly polished enough to—hopefully—stand their own grounds. They had remained in Arkrest Kingdom in the name of escorting Amria, but they were more like friends rather than defenders and escorts to Amria.

「The royal city was fun, but I heard that Dran’s hometown is now ruled by Christina, and Bern is a place still surrounded by nature despite its rapid development. It’s a great place to take a breather. Don’t you agree, Amria?」

「Yes, you’re right, Yachiyo. I’m sure  Your Highess and Princess Frau, as well as everyone else from Arkrest Kingdom, have taken great care of us. We even caused quite a lot of trouble fro Dran, Selina, and their companions when we left the empire. Now that we get to meet again, we have to offer them our thanks.」

Amria had become far more adept at expressing her emotions as opposed to her days when she had been confined in the mountain castle. Her laughter and smiles were heard and seen more often with the bubbly natures of Yachiyo and Fuuko. Despite this change, Amria still maintained a rather reserved attitude that had been ingrained in her through her upbringing; it was a demeanor that would certainly be hard to alter for the better.

「Amria certainly is very considerate and polite, Fuu.」

「She really is, Hachi. He’ll just laugh it off and say that thanking them once is enough. If we harp on such pleasantries too much, they’ll start being conscious of how they behave around us too. As long as we tell them sincerely that we’d like to be friends, apologize for mistakes, thank them for favors, and never forget their kindness, that would suffice. Nin, nin.」

「Is that how it is? But if you say so, then it must be true. I’ll do my very best then.」

「Yes, that’s the spirit. Keep with it. You don’t have to change anything about yourself, but just keep this in mind and you’ll be fine, oh, fine. After all, we’re bound to have a lasting acquaintanceship with Dran and his friends from here on out.」

「Fuuko is right, Amria. You have to leave behind this solemn nature of yours somewhere and somehow.」

This rather relaxed nature of Yachiyo and Fuuko was working well for Amria so far, and a wide smile spread on her face. Sperion and Frau were not the only ones who acknowledged the unbeatable nature of the two ladies in this regard, but everyone else who had interacted with the trio in the royal city shared the same opinion.

Enveloped by the uplifting and carefree natures of these dog-girls, Amria offered a smile as gentle as the sun’s rays in spring as she uttered a question to Sperion and Frau. It concerned a situation that had been on her mind for quite some time, but she had just been waiting for an opportunity to speak with the two in private, away from listening ears.

This pair of siblings were intelligent and kind-hearted, but they were also members of the royal family who would be prepared to put the interests of the kingdom first. Facing these two, Amria inquired with the trust that they would offer her an answer.

「Yachiyo and Fuuko have chided me, but I have to ask Your Highness about a matter concerning my own duties.」

Yachiyo and Fuuko sensed the change in atmosphere, and they watched with their lips pursed tightly. Sperion and Frau silently waited for the hidden princess to continue from where they were sitting side by side.

「I’ve heard that my uncle has finally been crowned emperor in the Romal Empire, and the conflict within the empire is escalating drastically, spurring more violence than before. As a result, many powerless and vulnerable people will lose their lives.」

Amria related the latest developments in the Romal Empire, news which had been kept from her ears as much as possible.

It would be a lie to say that the king and ministers did not raise the idea of deliberately informing Amria of the empire’s future and the devastation that would bring so that she would urge for the kingdom’s intervention in her position as a member of the imperial family. However, this suggestion had been rejected by the king and his subjects for fear of Sperion’s strong opposition and the volatile nature of the empire.

This could only mean that Amria’s knowledge of the Romal Empire must have been gathered by herself in the castle.

「Who in the world told you that?」

Sperion did not dismiss Amria’s words as mere nonsense or ramblings because he understood from the look in her eyes and her expression that she had already recognized this as a fact. If he were to attempt to weave a poor lie about this, he would only undermine Amria’s trust in him, and no good would come out of such a reaction.

「I have legs to walk on, as well as eyes, ears, and a mouth. If I can make my way around the castle, talk to people, and gather new information, I can figure out the rest with some thought.」

「I see, that makes sense. I heard that you often have fun when you’re with Fuuko or Yachiyo, but study hard when you’re alone. Seems like you’re an unexpectedly driven woman.」

「Unlike that castle, I’ve been able to do so much more in this kingdom, so I just can’t contain my curiosity.」

Amria’s blushing cheeks and downcast eyes were endlessly lovely even in the eyes of Frau, who was of the same age and sex as Amria. Asteria, Amria’s older twin sister, gave the impression of someone possessing far more ethereal beauty, but Amria clearly shared her sister’s intelligence.

「I’m not reproaching you in any way. Rather, I’m rather sorry that you can only remain in the castle, and even your movements within the castle are restricted.」

「I can go on long rides and excursions beyond the castle walls if I make a request in advance, so I’ve been very grateful thus far. Prince Sperion, Princess Frau, I’m someone who has lived without knowledge about my own identity and my parents. But even if I’m clueless about my own identity, I’m well aware that I have some apparent value. I might’ve been locked up in that castle, but I was never deprived of food or clothes. I had a warm bed, a study full of books to read, and a governess to teach me.」

The four continued to listen, curious about why Amria was relating her blessed life to them.

「Before Prince Sperion, Yachiyo, and the rest helped me leave, the people of the empire provided me with food, clothing, shelter, and everything I needed. Now, I owe Arkrest Kingdom my thanks for being able to live. Your Highness, I’m ignorant about the citizens of the empire, and I’m equally ignorant about the citizens of Arkrest Kingdom. Despite this, I still feel indebted to them for keeping me alive to this day. Prince Sperion, Princess Frau, this is just a question from a foolish woman who knows nothing about the world and its people. Is there any way that I can repay the people of the Romal Empire and Arkrest Kingdom? For that, I’m willing to be used in any way.」

Somehow, the princess of the Romal Empire was unexpectedly seeking help from Arkrest Kingdom.

Arkrest Kingdom could set the stage to intervene in the war in the Romal Empire using Amria’s presence as a pretext, but neither Sperion nor Frau could entertain such a thought under Amria’s sincere gaze.

Unaware of the feelings of the two royalty, Amria desperately repeated her request. She had yet to grasp her own value at present, the ties between the empire and the kingdom, or the situation in other nations, but she was aware that this was something that only she could do.

「You may find the distressed plea of a woman ignorant of the faces of her people laughable, but this is just how I am. I’m a Romal citizen who cannot stand by and watch when I have come to know about the hardships that would befall my homeland and her people. Please, I beg you to help me in whatever way you can.」

The sight of Amria bowing deeply after her speech made Sperion realize that this woman before him was not just a naive girl. She knew what it meant to ask for help and decided to do so in private.

Amria was well aware that the name and concept of the Romal Empire might be erased, as well as the fact that Arkrest Kingdom might not move in accordance with her wishes. Yet, she also had faith that Sperion and Frau would do whatever possible to grant her wishes.

Sperion found himself thinking that she was a rather shrewd woman.

「If possible, please cause as little trouble for the citizens of both nations.」

Sperion almost burst out laughing at Amria’s sincerely troubled tone. She was truly a selfless yet greedy princess. Sperion chuckled, musing about how it was no wonder Dran and Christina were so fond of this woman.
