Chapter 264
Magic Control Armors were weapons that easily bridged the gap between pure humans and other species like demi-humans with superior physical abilities. Even though ornaments and armors that enhanced physical abilities had existed since ancient times, Magic Control Armors were developed for mass production. These were made in a manner that anyone who donned them would be guaranteed a boost in abilities to a certain extent.
These armors ensured that their wearers were on par with insectoids with their extraordinary physical might in a head-on fight. Moreover, these were weapons that offered protection superior to the thick fur and carapace of beasts and insectoids. Even if the armor was damaged, as long as the necessary parts and functions were intact, it could still be restored and utilized in battle once more faster than the healing of human flesh.
As a new weapon, there was still much room for improvement. The cost of producing each piece of armor was also considerable. That being so, it was still considered by many nations as a formidable equipment whose functionality outweighed the cost at present.
The knights who were entrusted with such exquisite weapons—the Magic Control Knights—were, without a doubt, elite individuals selected through a rigorous assessment. The ones selected to don Magic Control Armor were certainly on par with those knights chosen to ride highly-valued wyverns and griffons.
The knights of the Romal Empire had dedicated themselves to mastering their Magic Control Armors as if these beloved tools were their limbs and extensions of their bodies. However, they were facing a rather unreasonable state of intimidation right now.
The source of this overwhelming intimidation was none other than Gwandan. He had easily crushed Count Verginten’s armored unit of 100 Magic Control Armor troops with sheer force; no tricks had been pulled in this show of might.
The magic gun of the Magic Control Armor could easily reduce a living human to bits. Bullets of these destructive guns rained down on Gwandan, hitting him in fatal spots. Even so, these bullets could not even rip his clothes, let alone leave a scratch on his scales or skin.
The invincibility of the man standing there right now was sufficient to make one wonder if he was a real dragon disguised as a dragonian. That was not particularly true, but the Magic Control knights were pretty spot-on with their intuition.
Gwandan broke through the barrage head-on without mustering a single breath or dragon language magic. He then swung up the poleaxe in his right hand.
The Magic Control Knights were clueless that this poleaxe transformed from Gwandan’s dragon scales could crush Orichalcum to bits, though this ignorance was exactly what saved them from plunging into greater despair—albeit by very little.
The four units closest to Gwandan switched their magic guns into great axes and launched an attack. Count Veginten’s Magic Control Knights were made up of a platoon of four units, and they had always trained in a four-man formation.
The matrices fanning out around Gwandan was like a swarm of black beetles flocking around a white flower. However, Gwandan was in no way as lovely as a white flower. The swinging great axe of the matrices had the power to break down the gates and defenses of a reinforced fortress. Any living human who suffered such a battering would not be able to survive unscathed.
Despite being struck with the full force of the axe on both shoulders, neck, and forehead, Gwandan’s feet did not stop for a moment. His left arm moved at the same time that the great axe of the matrix formation creaked in recoil from the recent blow it executed.
It was a casual swing, as though brushing away an insect pestering him. Shattered armor, the great axe, and countless metal wires and frames were hurled into the air. The four matrices that had lost their arm and head were sent flying. They hurtled into the other matrices behind them, stopping the march forward with a head-on collision.
A loud echo resounded like the ringing of a great bell. Gwandan took another step forward. Even in the face of Gwandan’s overwhelming blow, the Magic Control Knights stood firm in their fighting spirits. This was only because of Verginten’s bloodlust that had overtaken them and their anticipation of this situation from reports of the 4th Battalion.
The remaining magic users gathered around the matrices and their raised magic guns. Further behind them were the artillerymen surrounding Verginten. This unit of troops was hurriedly preparing to fire cannons and magic guns mounted on carts.
Of the remaining ninety-six matrices, sixty or so were marching forward in a bid to stop Gwandan. Gwandan was physically smaller than these matrices, but the Magic Control Knights were slowed down by his intimidating presence and his nonchalance.
On the other hand, Gwandan was determined to disable all 10,000 of Verginten’s troops in this very spot. Verginten was not the only one to be taken down, but all the soldiers under Verginten’s command were to be defeated.
Gundeus and the others had caught up with Gwandan by this point. The sound of shells fired by Gundeus rang out, while Kyrlinne’s laughter was mixed with the shrill slicing. Crushing and grinding could also be heard from Lynette at the other end of the troops.
Gwandan moved to shred and hurl the approaching matrices flocking to him like moths to a lamp, as though not wanting to lose out to his companions. He crushed and tossed his opponents about, turning the high-end weapons into broken pieces of junk at high speed.
With the capabilities of Gwandan and his comrades, this battle with Verginten’s troops was reduced to nothing but a simple work operation for the former.
As Gwandan and his companions weaved their way through the flocks of matrices and sent these weapons flying through waves of wind magic, magic and artillery shells shot toward Gwandan endlessly. These shots punctured holes in the ground around the white dragonian, engulfing him in flames and smoke.
The firepower would destroy any Magic Control Armor currently used in battle, but the shockwave emitted from the epicenter of the blasts sent the flood of shells and magic attacks hurtling away. Gwandan swung his poleaxe up in the center of the fight as he came into sight completely unharmed.
A single swing of the poleaxe was all it took to repel an attack that concentrated the entire firepower of a single army. Verginten’s troops was forced to recognize the reality they were facing, no matter how unwilling they were to believe their eyes.
They had steeled themselves to fight an unprecedented monster after witnessing the destruction of Adelaide’s 4th Battalion. However, they were still horrified by this unimaginable monstrosity standing before them.
「Are they baffled? I’m sure our troops have been trained to overcome this. That being said, I have no experience in leading or training an army either.」
It barely mattered whether Verginten was done speaking. Gwandan swung done the poleaxe with more force than before. This blow of the poleaxe formed from the scales of an Ancient-Celestial Dragon was completely different from all previous attacks.
As soon as the curved blade sliced through the air, countless tornadoes stretching high into the sky engulfed the soldiers and Magic Control Knights of Verginten’s army. Screams terrorized this world torn apart by the poleaxe as tornadoes raged across the battlefield. It took all the might of Verginten’s troops to keep themselves from being swallowed up by the tornadoes. There was nothing hey could do to even approach Gwandan in this plight.
The magic users desperately called on the spirits of the wind to protect themselves, and the military priests prayed to the gods to conjure wards around their allies.
Gwandan was impressed by their swift response rather than flailing around helplessly. Enemies or not, this was a skilled army. However, this admiration was no reason for Gwandan to go easy on his enemies. He swung his poleaxe once more, conjuring more tornadoes on the battlefield and casting the winds into a greater frenzy.
The magic users, priests, and Magic Control Armor that had held out so far were swallowed up by the new tornadoes. Gwandan made sure of this before turning his eyes to the remaining focus of Verginten as his tornadoes scraped away at the ground with each collision.
Moans of pain filled the air as the soldiers released from the tornadoes fell one after another on the ground with heavy thuds. There was one remaining unit of men left as they looked over at Gwandan fearfully.
The majority of soldiers facing Gwandan had been eliminated with a single blow. The only exception was a handful of knights under Verginten’s direct command.
The three manmade girls had already defeated most of the cavalry deployed on the left and right flanks. The horses were treated gently, while their riders had been beaten into a stupor. The sight of dozens of people taken down in mere seconds was nothing short of a nightmare for these adversaries.
