Chapter 5. Fomorians. Part 5.
– Who to hell is that? – asked Kragor question on everyone’s mind.
– One of thirteen fomorian gods, who led them into battle in the past, – answered Adamus: -According to legends seven archangels killed half of them, Lucifer personally cut down three. But seven of their general-gods survived. Their power surpass even power of archangels. In the past they were defeated, but not before killing thousands of demons, who were sacrificed to weaken them. No wonder Abaddon is running, he probably pissed his angel pants.
– Can you stop him? – asked Lilith.
Adamus looked around. Some of mercenaries were looking back. It was only matter of time before they would run.
– Got to try. If we do not stop that guy, my men will run. It will be a massacre, and not the one caused by us.
Lilith looked at a god and felt chills running down her spine.
– I might be able to do something about him, but I will need time to cast.
Adamus looked at her and after a moment nodded.
– Fine.
He extended his arm and concentrated. Then dozens of fomorians and land itself got covered in ice. Lilith recognized a spell. It was called Frozen Land. Only master magician could cast a fifth level Water magic spell.
– Have enough mana to cast it once, – said Adamus: – But we will need space. What’s your plan.
– I will use Primordial magic, – answered Lilith: – Time stasis spell could work, but first I need time to cast spells, which will render his artifacts and resistance skills useless, to increase our chances. You will need to keep him off me.
– Will do, – nodded Adamus. He stepped forward and concentrated. In front of fomorian god, mercenaries started to run, but for now, thanks to Adamus Frozen Land spell, they did not needed to worry about other fomorians. One of the mages saw what Asmund was doing and casted a spell which created a stone wall between them and fomorian forces, buying mercenary leader time to face the god one on one.
– Let’s get to work, – grinned Adamus and extended his hand towards fomorian general. Adamus grinned. Most mages would not be able to fight a god, who was resilient towards most spells, but Adamus was different. An old memory surfaced – vague but insistent, like a half-remembered dream. Images flickered through Adamus’ mind: a life lived in another world entirely, filled with strange technology and endless virtual realms. Unlike his men, he had memories of his previous life. Life in a world where magic did not existed. A world where he played a game called Heroes, Magic and Monsters. Most of his memories were gone, he lost them as an infant, because a mind of a human child could not contain all the memories of a grown man. But he remembered enough, to have an advantage, even against a god. Unlike ordinary mages he knew about physics and its laws. He thought about his current abilities and spells which he could use.
As the fomorian general loomed before them, his godly presence radiating an aura of power, which seemed to warp reality itself around him. Adamus felt a sudden flash of memory surface from the depths of his mind – an ancient raid against a dragon in his old gaming life.
The mercenary captain’s eyes widened with realization, as he remembered how spells had bounced off the beast’s impenetrable scales. But they hadn’t attacked directly at all; instead, they’d collapsed the very cave around it, burying their foe under tons of rock.
With grim determination, Adamus raised his hands and began weaving a spell, not aimed at the god himself, but rather focused intently on the ground beneath them. The earth rumbled ominously as Adamus’ magic took hold, turning once solid stone into quicksand that rippled outwards in a circle, centered directly under the fomorian general. The monster let out an enraged roar, as he suddenly found himself sinking into the treacherous morass with each step, his massive form slowing considerably.
– I’ll keep him occupied! – Adamus called out to Lilith, voice strained from exertion: – But I can’t hold this long!
The fomorian general snarled and clawed futilely at the ground, sinking ever deeper into Adamus’ magical quicksand. But even quicksand, which could sink dozen mercenaries could not contain a god.
Adamus used the same spell again and grinned, when fomorian again sunk into the ground. God roared in rage and in a flash, he lunged forward, moving his left arm and hurling his spear with all his mighty strength.
Lilith’s eyes widened in horror as she saw Adamus’ body impaled by the god’s thrown weapon; even at this distance she could tell from the angle that no mortal man could survive such a grievous wound. The mercenary captain staggered backward, clutching at the spear protruding from his chest with trembling hands.
– Adamus, no! – Lilith cried out, voice cracking with emotion even as she redoubled her magical assault upon their foe.
But it was too late; Adamus’ legs buckled beneath him and he crumpled to the ground, eyes fluttering close, as his blood pooled around him on ash-strewn earth. In those final moments, a faint smile played across the fallen warrior’s lips – proud of having bought Lilith enough time to finish what they had begun together, here amidst rising howls echoing through the battlefield.
Lilith grimaced. She was almost done. She already casted two spells. One to render gods resistance skills useless and other to temporary scatter artifact power. But she needed to finish her last spell.
Fomorian general went towards them, to retrieve his weapon. Kragor stood before Lilith and squeezed his axe. Giant minotaur looked like an ant, in front of a god. But he did not abandoned his master.
General-god grinned and laughed, seeing the minotaur. He raised his sword above his head and went towards two figures. Everyone else were already running away, after Adamus’ death. Mercenaries moral was broken, and they were running.
Lilith stood still, still casting her spells. God slowly approached, ten meters, eight, five.
– Too late, – said Lilith. Light sparks surrounded the god and then, in a flash, he disappeared. Lilith exhaled and looked at Adamus. She approached his figure and pulled out a spear, which pierced fearless mercenary leader. She showed spear inside her magic purse, and looked at Kragor.
– Let’s join our running brethren.
Minotaur nodded, and they run from fomorians. Lilith casted Haste spell on the run, first on herself and then on Kragor. Their speed increased and they soon caught up to running mercenaries and even outrun them. Behind them, demon and mercenary army was retreating. Fomorians were running after then, cutting down dozens of soldiers.
Lilith glanced back, and kept running. Men around Lilith managed to outrun fomorian’s, who stopped the chase, when they got far away from battlefield. First battle was taken by fomorians, even if they lost their general.
