Chapter 266: The World You Can See

We returned back to the deeper part of the floor after our lunch break. Adventurers are folks who bravely tread on dangerous paths in search of new discoveries — well, there are truly some like that, but the majority of them were muscle-brained folks who were unable to find other work and thus had to use their own bodies as capital. They’re businessmen who weigh the value of the information they acquire and how much money they’ll earn from it against their own safety.

And so, we briskly did our job until dinner time, and after that, Retze assiduously observed the surroundings in every turn of the road for any opportunities that could bring money in as we move forward.

A new trail, a piece of fabric that seemed like it’s from a robe that was caught and torn, and upturned, differently colored stones that seemed like somebody tripped on them.

「The side of the stones that stayed down all this time has a deeper color, see. 」
Retze explained to me. I could see it now that he pointed it out, but Sensei, it’s hard to notice it in the first place.

「It’d be easier to tell if the stone was sitting on dirt. But that’s quite a huge trace they left here, huh. Seems like whoever it was didn’t care even if it bumps into something, or whatever else happens. 」
Eh, no, Retze is the only one who knew that. Ah, Butler noticed it too.

It’d be nice if I can also recognize many things like those two, but it might be fun because the world is so huge, but the road to getting to their level seems so far!

Two other groups were found separately on different magic silver mining points on the 20th floor.
One of the groups was conscious with no trace of the black spirits’ presence. They’re using tools properly like normal people, see!

It goes without saying that the conscious party should walk themselves back to Glasses. They seemed shaken after learning the situation, but they’re probably gonna be fine since there weren’t any monsters or black spirits along the way back.

They apparently knew that they weren’t strong enough to go to the 20th floor, but they thought that they could try going down for the first time, because the hero already went before them. They dug a bit of magic silver, so they’re very happy they have something to brag about to their other comrades.

Today’s second party was in the same state as the very first one. I got used to it, just a tiny bit, yup, already got used to it but i hate it!!

It’s probably past dinner time when we threw the party possessed by the Black Spirit into the Glasses’ magic circle. The second pair, who had helped Glasses with loading them there, thanked us.

There were also some new faces, and they were in the middle of fixing the ropes that had been dropped down from above. It seems like they’re preparing to lower the iron cage.

「That was very quick of you. 」
「It’s not that we’re quick to deal with them, it’s that we’re quick to find them. We’re an excellent bunch even without counting the ability to See the spirits you know. 」
Dinosso smirked and said.

And we’re also quick to carry them. There are plenty of strong people among our group, you know.

「I’m glad we made it in time. The necessary tools to capture the black spirits have arrived, so please bring it with you. 」
Glasses probably prepared the ropes and talismans that he distributed to each person.

「Is it possible to replenish these items when we return next time? It’d be great if we can also have as much water as we need. 」
「I guarantee it. 」
Dean commented while watching them work. Glasses smiled in reply and he promised to fulfill that request.

We quickly moved to another location, leaving Glasses who was bitten all over again for the finger treatment. I want to enjoy my dinner like usual, and the other folks would be working through the night to lower the iron cage, so it’s going to be too noisy to get a good night’s sleep.

It’s not deliberate negligence, but assimilation, that inflicts damage to the host, apparently. The guy from the forest flashed through my mind — I wonder if he’s alright after I pulled the black spirit from him?

At any rate, the assimilated parts would be really affected by the black spirit, so they had to be brought to the temple for purification.

The supplies inside the iron cage were taken out and the humans were crammed in. Do your best, all of you guys who are pulling an all-nighter tonight.

I feel like Glasses is about to die from magic depletion and exhaustion, but he’ll probably be alright because he’s Glasses.

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve saved anyone from those Glasses wanted us to save. Maybe they’re the folks who went to the 25th level?

Thanks (but not thanks) to Fake-kun gobbling up the spirits there weren’t as many black spirits as I thought. They would have run to the 20th or 40th level, considering Fake-kun’s direction of movement. Especially the 40th floor in particular. The monsters should still be as they were from the 41st level onwards, but I don’t have any idea what’s going on there.

The black spirits that were too slow to escape and hadn’t been eaten yet were possessing adventurers, I think.

「Time to eat!! 」
We arrived at our next destination, so we set our bags down.

「Hey, think about something other than eating, will you. 」
An exasperated Dinosso commented.

「I am thinking, I am thinking. 」
I was just thinking about the black spirits a moment ago.

「Oh, right, why did your attitude toward the Deputy Guild Master suddenly soften? 」
Retze asked.

「Did it change that much? 」
Was it really different? I didn’t speak, though.

「Jean-sama is easy to read, after all. 」
Butler quips.

「The atmosphere changes obviously. When you’re in a good mood, the spirits around you get closer too. 」
Khan revealed something new. So, how far the spirits were from me kinda served as something like a barometer of my mood, huh!? Oy, stop exposing me, you guys!

「…Anyway, Glasses’ spirit had been sucking a lot of mana from him, and I’m not sure if it’s pitiful or funny. The spirit was quite naughty too. 」

「So you can even tell to that extent, huh. I’d like to see what kind of world Jean is looking at, even once. 」
I wanna see the world through Retze’s eyes too, as it seems like he might see more than he lets on.

「Someone said before that they were scared of people who can see spirits, while another said that they find them beautiful. Maybe what one perceives depends on the person looking. As for me, I’d like to take a peek at the world you can see! 」
Chris was doing theatrical gestures dramatically again.

His chin spirit is still alive and well.

「I think the world that Jean sees is a gentle world. 」
Ash said something embarrassing.

「Nah, it’s more like a world where spirit fetishes are on full display. 」
「What’s that supposed to mean? 」
Dean asked while taking his shoes off.

I’m talking about the lizard spirits and humanoid spirits gathering around your feet!
