Chapter 310: Trio’s Tour around the Island

The pier is the first checkpoint on the island. A cheap inn was adjoined to the security station, and folks who were too smelly had to take a thorough bath there. It’d be a problem if people were to bring some weird disease into the island after all.

「Ooh, fishies! So pretty~ 」
A cheerful voice floated as we strolled through the pier. Arina delightedly stared at the sea’s azure color and its clarity ever since she stepped onto the boat.

Although the seas of Nalluahdid aren’t polluted, the color is dark because it’s deep, and the arrival and departure of boats disturb the sand on the sea bed, making the water murky. The two adults were already used to the sight of the seas outside Nalluahdid so they weren’t surprised.

After leaving the pier, the scenery of the original houses that were being repaired or demolished greeted us. Several of those houses were allotted to the folks who wished to live by the sea to make a living and to those who work in the pier.

After passing through this place, only stone pavement and the sea stretched on.

I love gazing at the sea from an open space so the sight excites me but the trio were totally unperturbed! Ahh, people used to the sea sure are different…!!

It’s also the taxman’s job to tour folks around while explaining the things that they had to take note of on the island but I’ll do it for our guests today.

First rule — do not dirty the waterways. Next, unauthorized entry to restricted places is forbidden. Finally, taking things other than goods you purchased and bringing them with you is also prohibited.

These are basically the warnings that have to be reiterated, while the rest would be similar to the rules you follow when visiting any other ordinary town.

「So there really are waterways here. For such an abundant amount of water to have suddenly sprung up… 」
Orlando was muttering, probably thinking about something again.

There’s a short staircase you can descend to go to the waterway along the way and all three of them went down. Ahh we might miss lunch at this rate.

「Cold! Can we drink it? 」
「Yup, you can. The water is used by the homes by the bay, so don’t dirty it, okay. 」
This is Auro’s first checkpoint so it’s under the surveillance of the security officer.

「For it to not be salty… 」
「You mean to say this water is free of charge!? 」
Gramps and Orlando were shocked.

Actually, there had been discussions of purchasing water for maritime voyages apparently. However, Auro and Kiel were against the idea in consideration of the time it would take for small boats to make the round trip, and the potential increase in people who didn’t understand that.

We resumed our stroll through the short pathway.

「Oranges?」
Gramps stopped on his tracks. Yup, the orange trees planted on the sloping ground are still small, but they already have fruits.

「Just a bit more and they’ll be ready for picking. 」
The oranges planted on the slope are the ones originally growing on this island, as well as the crossbred trees from my orchard. I’m looking forward to making squeezed orange juice from the fruits later.

The saplings growing by the wayside are still far from being thick and sturdy; they looked like they could break by grabbing them, but I’m sure they’ll provide shade with their dense canopies later on.

「It’s the first time I saw orange trees!! 」
Oranges are also sold in Nalluahdid, but they don’t have fruit trees despite having the same climate since the entire island is completely covered in stone pavement.

The two adults came from colder places so it’s also a rare sight for them. Ahh, lunch seems even further away now. We haven’t even stepped foot into the town yet…

「You can still see them on the way back, so how about we have lunch first then go sightseeing after? 」
When I urged them a bit, they started walking again, seemingly agreeing to what I said.

We passed through the gate with blue flags hanging down, and into the town —

「Ohh, the stone-paved road is impressive, but just look at this gate! The walls! They definitely don’t look like they’ve been hastily built. 」
「Are those the rumored dyed textiles? And the security seems to be organized too. 」
「So pretty!! 」

— no, we didn’t enter yet.

Yes, it’s true that the construction was fast paced but the craftsmen didn’t cut corners at all. Well, I did secretly work on stuff like soil preparation, and there are still places that aren’t finished yet.

「Yes, yes. Get along now, let’s move. 」
I urged them again, and we finally entered the town.

「The people on the pier and the security officers here are dressed rather uniquely. The light fabrics are beautiful. 」
Orlando commented.
「It’s cool so it’s quite popular. Ah, but you can’t put on weight, though. 」
I want the island kids to grow up well with the security personnel as their role model.

「The buildings are gorgeous, no disarray at all. 」
Gramps said as he surveyed his surroundings.

Many houses in Nalluahdid and other places have slanted walls. Some of them are originally constructed with warped structures to fit the terrain, and some of them often share walls to support each other.

As someone who lived in Japan, the land of many earthquakes, the sight was way too scary! And so, the buildings in this town are designed to stand independently without needing to rely on the adjacent structures. Well, buildings with arcades are connected by shared walls, but they are still straight and well-maintained.

「Lemons? 」
「Are there waterways beneath the buildings? 」
「Do they have pathways over there, on top of those? 」
「Do the residents also grow flowers? 」
「The waterflow is so…impressive! 」

We finally arrived at one of the inns facing the plaza after leading the curious trio around. Ack, it’s already way, way past lunch time, you guys!!
