Chapter 468: In Town

The Meyr folks who had been staring at me ー no, at the green manastone took a step back, then they started squirming.

The five people circling me swayed their bodies and waved their arms ー Oh, okay, 『One boatload of wheat for the small one, ten boatloads for the medium one. What about the big one? How much wheat for that? 』

Aha, they’re communicating through gestures! Gestures! And 【Language】-san is doing great, too amazing, in fact….!

『Do you get it? No? Should we get the trade tablet? 』
They still wore poker faces, but I could sense a bit of worry and confusion among them. They’re a bit childish, with a certain pure vibe to them too.

『We can do that for the small and medium ones, but can I trade the big one for a tour of the town instead? 』

That’s what I tried to say, but here I am, doing my own version of their weird dance. Hey, 【Language】-san…!!!!!

『Oh, we got through him. Can you understand us? Your words don’t sound like you have bad intentions. Okay, we’ll tour you. Give us the green ones, okay? 』

Ahh, so you can’t lie using this language, huh. Does it also relay feelings? Once we started talking, all that initial fear completely faded away.

『Sure, I’ll give you the big one now. 』
Ack, but twisting my body like this feels so embarrassing! Is there a telepathy option or something? Eh, no? Uh, okay.

I followed the Meyr folks while trying to suppress my questions. Their hands and arms are a bit flatter than humans. Their robes look like a dress that flares out from the chest, and they were also wearing sleeveless vests and their heads were covered in fabric. One of the five Meyr folks was wearing a different-shaped cap, but other than that there was nothing that could distinguish them from each other. I can’t even tell their gender apart.

They still glided along smoothly, but their feet were hidden by the robes so long the hems were nearly brushing the ground. I’m curious, but asking to see their feet would definitely come off as harassment, so I won’t mention it. Well, different race, different culture—if they cover their feet, it probably means something important to them.

If I insist on asking them to show me, the whole affair might turn into a marriage proposal ー cultural differences can be terrifying, you know.

『This is the plaza. We have lots of water around so that our eyes don’t dry out. 』
『Well, you do have eyes that are bigger than ours. The fountain is amazing.』
I’ve seen a few fountains with nice sculptures that spout water jets, but theirs go all out.

The large central fountain sends water up in sync with the smaller ones surrounding it, sprinkling water all over the place. The smaller fountains shoot water straight up, but the main one forms a dome of water with its spray.

There’s an ornate, upturned bowl floating in midair, catching the water as it falls in arcs along the bowl’s curves. The water pressure changes too, making the bowl dip and rise like a flying saucer. It looks pretty fun.

By the way, it turns out the Meyr folks also blink, but it’s very rare. Moreover, although they can move individually, they seem to share information and also opinions as a group. They dance ー I mean talk ーin perfect synchronization, even if it’s impromptu.

The plaza has a very beautiful pattern of flowers, water and sun-dried bricks. This place and the other spots where people hang out are meticulously decorated, and the outskirts of the town seemed well-maintained too. The buildings are arranged in an orderly way.

The Meyr folks usually seem to move around in groups of five. There are plenty of people around, but the only sounds that can be heard are that of water splashes and the soft rustling of wind through the trees. It gives the whole place an unusual, kind of magical vibe.

You can gauge the area based on the spirits around it. There are light spirits of white sunlight and bright sun rays, as well as those of water spirits such as water sprays and overflowing streams, and even flower spirits everywhere. There’s also lots of calm and orderly spirits?

Sounds like they’re calm, steady folks who don’t experience major changes in their lives, I guess? Seems like it’s not a good idea to bring in big crowds or introduce too much of my own culture.

Most of the spirits here have humanoid forms but with elongated heads, kinda resembling the Meyr folks. They seem quiet too, probably because they also communicate through gestures. The water spirits also speak alongside their gestures, though.

『What kinds of food do you guys eat? 』
I tried asking the Meyr folks.

『Water, wheat and flower nectar. 』
『I see. 』
It made sense. Looking around, it’s a town filled with flowers and overflowing with water, and fields of wheat stretched outside, but there’s no other crops planted here.

One of the Meyr folks glided away and returned to the place they showed me earlier.

『We eat this a lot. It’s the nectar of shakarada flowers. 』
The Meyr folk handed me a square piece of baked wheat bread.

Shakarada referred to the tall trees with purple blooms growing in the town. Seems like they picked flower varieties that yield a lot of nectar.

『Thanks for the food. 』

Unleavened bread? It’s crispy and a bit hard. As I chew, the taste of wheat spreads first in my mouth, followed by the floral scent of nectar, bringing a gentle sweetness with it. It’s simple but really good.

I munched on it then took a sip of water. The bread felt a bit dehydrating in my mouth, so I really appreciate the water. It’s soft and easy on the palate ー it’s probably soft water, huh? That’s rare.

The last place they took me to was the biggest building, and possibly the central area of the town. The sundried brick wall was thicker compared to the other buildings, and it’s also heavily decorated.

Maybe it’s something similar to a 『Fae’s Bough』 or temple? Or maybe it’s a palace of their ruler, if they have one?
