Chapter 473: Pondering about the Mysteries of the World

It’s a perfectly clear day in Canum. The weather around here is usually more of a ‘partly cloudy’ kind than sunny, but we usually have a lot of nice, clear days like this from onset to end of summer.

I had been going around since early today, handing out the loaves I baked this morning using the freshly milled flour from last night. ー Sure, I have some in 【Storage】 but I’m in the mood to bake them.

I had some too. The baguette has a rich, wheat aroma, and it’s delicious.

I also made another type, a dark rye bread, by using a traditional recipe from this place. It calls for fermented yeast, but I dunno if it’s because of fermentation but it tastes slightly sour. If you let it rest, it’s gonna turn rock hard ー Dean’s an avid fan of that kind of bread, even insisting that hardness is the best.

Speaking of Dean, he’s still asleep; in the rental house, only Retze and Khan are up. I left the basket in the living room ーthat’s their shared space ー so they’re probably gonna eat the bread together when the other three wakes up.

The weather is nice and all, but I’m currently lounging on the bed in the attic room. Daifuku was in his box earlier and he let me squish and pet him. He’s gonna move out of the box and into the basket next to it once it’s warmer, but for now, it’s still chilly for him.

Alright, time to mull things over.

I requested some spirits to put up a spirit-repelling spell on the Canum house. Only specific spirits I’ve named are allowed near it. There’s a chance that stronger or faster spirits might slip through, but the odds of running into spirits here are way lower than outside.

I adopted the Meyr folks’ habit creating a thin film of air around myself. It makes me feel okay with the『Particles』around, though it’s not like those tiny ones have any way to communicate their thoughts.

Although I’m happy with my life as it is and have no intention of changing anything, since I’m already aware of this stuff then might as well think about it.

Just saying this first ー based on the Meyr folks’ reaction, the spirits I’ve named so far seemed to be fine, but I figure it’s better to be cautious just in case word gets out.

Spirits don’t just listen to what I say, they can also read my thoughts after all. Oh well, it’s questionable whether they understand correctly, though.

Anyway, I had a hunch about it before, but it seems there’s someone out there using the spirits to do all sorts of things, and they’re making other people build this world only to destroy it.

It seems like they’re aiming for a world where physical matter and spirits coexist in a balanced way, which is probably what the deities want from me too, but I have no idea what exactly that world would look like. Well, we can’t really say for sure that what they want from me and what they want from the heroes are the same.

Whoever it is, maybe they don’t even know what they’re aiming for either. Are they a spirit with tons of kin and followers? Or perhaps it’s someone like Ruf with tons of spirit contracts?

Since things aren’t going entirely their way, I doubt they have full control over all spirits. Even the ones I’ve named seem to slip through their grasp.

The deities watching over me are also probably contracted with that entity. When I made a contract with the seabird spirit, I tried experimenting by keeping his connection with Lady Rose intact. Perhaps my relationship with the deities is similar, like, maybe they’re allowed to have a contract with me while still being bound to someone even more powerful.

I already named Riche, so I chose his follower spirits to create the film of air surrounding me. I wanna name the deities too, but it would probably be best to do that when they’re all together. Besides, naming them all at once would definitely need a lot of mana, and I’m not confident that mine would be enough to do that.

Plus, the deities have also gotten stronger somehow. Maybe their contractor has been giving them mana? I’ve been going out of my way lately to name spirits in areas outside the deities’ domain ー places that don’t even appear on the map ー just to keep them from becoming part of the deities’ kin. Did I get caught?

Oh well, spirits read my mind, so through the deities, my thoughts are probably an open book to that entity. I must have been totally exposed already. Ah, but I don’t really mind getting caught. I’m just doing whatever I want in this world, after all.

Back when I first arrived here, the deities mentioned how it’s not good for them to interfere too much with the affairs of those who had been summoned ー like me and the heroes ー or to make requests of us, so I guess they’re basically letting me do my own thing.

It’s kind of creepy how Namina seems to have been swapped out with a completely different person, I mean spirit. It’s obviously a different entity, even the domain she oversees has changed, yet none of the spirits or priests have noticed the switch.

That said, the ones who admired the previous Namina—like Zabuton, the spirits that used to be around the temple, and even Paulor—have all left. The new spirit’s mind control doesn’t seem to be that powerful.
I can’t tell if this change is good or bad. Riche might know something —our kid is so smart, after all.

As for me, I’m grateful to have the power to live the way I want and do what I want. As long as no one tries to tie me down, I don’t see a reason to be hostile. Coexisting seems fine.

It’s my hobby to explore places that don’t show up on maps, plus it’s a necessity for me to name the spirits over there. A lot of them even come flying straight to me. It’s only natural that Riche and Spirit Noth are the ones who keep getting stronger and not the deities, can’t help it.

I mean, yeah, I use 【Teleport】, 【Storage】, and even『Pantry』 so I’m sure the other deities are getting stronger too. It’s not like I’m doing it on purpose—it just happens, okay?

Besides, the reason I want to get stronger is in case I ever bump into the heroes by accident! Gotta be prepared, right?
