Look, it’s not like I’m following Moegi just because she’s a graceful, beautiful fox-eared woman. I’m just trying to get things done quickly, that’s all. You should learn a little from Elma, look how composed she is.

Correction. She isn’t composed, she is trying to act composed. The angle of her ears is the same as when she is a little angry, her ears always point slightly backward like that. Konoha stopped us at the entrance of what I guess you could call the Shrine’s foyer or dirt floor and instructed us to remove our shoes. I obediently took off my shoes and stepped onto the wooden floor. Hmm, this place has a distinct atmosphere that reminds me of traditional Japanese homes or shrines. Kugi, Elma, and Mimi had no trouble removing their shoes and stepping up onto the floor, but the others seemed to fumble a bit. I suppose they aren’t accustomed to a culture of removing shoes before entering a space like this. Now that I think about it, the elves also had a certain vibe that felt vaguely Asian, or at least reminiscent of Japanese culture in some way.
But why is Mimi so used to this?
「Oh! I visit Kugi’s room quite often!」
「That explains it.」
Now that she mentioned it, Kugi’s room has a tatami-like layout, and she enforces a strict no-shoes policy beyond the entryway. Mimi must be accustomed to it since she regularly hangs out there.

We continued talking as we were guided by the three guards toward the inner part of the Shrine. Hmm, this place really reminds me of a shrine or temple. There is also something else. It feels like psionic power is coursing through the entire building—these aren’t just remnants, there is an active circuit of energy here. I might be imagining things, but the various decorations on the walls seem to be glowing faintly in a blue-violet hue.
「…Are you interested in it?」
Once again, Moegi had quietly sidled up next to me. She must have noticed me absentmindedly glancing around as we walked. But before I could respond, Kugi intercepted her—literally, by slipping between us and clinging to my arm.
「My Lord, this Shrine has a system that absorbs the surplus Spiritual Power generated by the people inside and stores it in the accumulator you saw earlier. Additionally, it provides protective functions for the building. The protective barrier created by this is integrated into the Shrine structure itself, which is why you feel its presence throughout the entire place.」
「I see. So psionic technology is embedded into the building itself. Wait a second, though—won’t that be a problem? If it starts drawing from me, won’t it cause an overflow or something?」
「I’d like to say it’s fine, but… it seems a bit challenging. I apologize, Commander. I’ll go help with the control systems.」
「Please do. We’ll be fine on our own.」
Ranshin acknowledged Moegi’s suggestion, and she hurried off. Moegi had lost a little of her composure after a brief telepathic exchange. At the sound of the voice from inside, Ranshin slid open a door that resembled a traditional Japanese fusuma. Inside, a man was waiting for us. He was dressed in something that reminded me of a Shinto priest’s attire. The ears on his head were round, like Konoha’s. Is he a bear? A tanuki? Maybe a weasel? I can’t tell.
「It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Fushin, the head priest of this Shrine.」
「Thank you for the kind introduction. I’m Captain Hiro, a mercenary. You might already know, but this is Kugi, a priestess, and these are my crew.」
I introduced each of my crew members as I took a seat on the prepared cushion. I sat cross-legged, while Kugi, in a formal seiza posture. The rest of the crew, who weren’t used to sitting on the floor, assumed the position that was easier for them. Huh? why is Mimi sitting in seiza too? Maybe Kugi taught her?
「I’ve heard that preparations in the homeland are nearly complete, and the fleet to escort you is already on standby. The only thing left is to reach an agreement with the Grakkan Empire so they allow us the use of the Gateway, which shouldn’t take much time.」
「Already on standby, huh? That’s pretty fast.」
「That’s because you already informed us through Seijou-dono about your intention to visit us through our embassy in the Grakkan Empire Capital, Hiro-dono. We had plenty of time to prepare.」

Fushin nodded with that same calm smile. That makes sense. If that’s their reasoning, then I suppose I could go along with it. I don’t sense any malicious intent behind it.
Of course, that doesn’t mean I can completely drop my guard. I trust Kugi, but the Holy Vuelzarus Empire might have other motives. In the worst-case scenario, they might try to capture me and use me as a massive psionic energy source.
Yeah, I’m probably being overly suspicious, but better safe than sorry. It’s wiser to stay cautious and avoid any irreversible situations than to regret it later.

I can understand perfectly what is saying Hiro, although the Elma’s words has meaning, in this particular case is most probably that nothing happen… the problem is that is Hiro, everything could happen but what about If due the kind of place his is going the already get ready to that kind of “destiny atraction” and we avoid the problems this time? Now that I think about it, this is new to me. By this I mean a fantasy story where beastmen have a much more advanced and special empire compared to the other races, be it human dwarf or elf. I think at some points in the story Hiro mentions seeing other races, though I think beastmen with only ears and tails as animal traits are only in the Vuelzarus Empire.

Yep, called it. The moment I read “the building can store power”, immediately thought it gonna get overflow. Not enough info to bite, but much better than other chapter. Ignoring the japan in another world, cultural exchange is good way to add more lore.

Doubt the empire would try to forcibly make him a battery. They sent Kugi to prevent boomies, trying to force him get them the boomies. Doesn’t seem like they have the capability of handling a full power reaction from him unless this whole thing with “oh noes our energy handling architecture is nearly insufficient to handle your leakage!” is just to lull him into a false sense of confidence.

Sigh. It gets kinda old with many of these authors…. Oh! It’s just like the Japanese homes I remember… And this is the 2nd time hes done it. The elves were the 1st. Come on light novel writers. Crack a book and learn about some different cultures. Japanese and old middle ages English stuff is all there is I guess. Pulls me out of the story every time… OTHER than that, pretty interesting. Need more Kugi backstory.
Old and overused indeed. But at least it might not be without a reason. I remember at some points in the story Kugi mentions that their nation/empire did something terrible in the past, so now they are repenting by helping and protecting all isekai individuals. Maybe in the past they got involved with Japan from some world (not necessarily Hiro’s previous world), and now they adopted that culture. Other stories also use similar world building elements, with past isekai heroes leaving a strong influence on the fantasy world’s culture.
Again, it’s heavily overused and I would also prefer less of it but at least the author left himself/herself some room to not make a swiss cheese like plot.
I really shouldn’t complain about him I guess. At least his MCs aren’t total idiots that could never conceive of touching a woman. And he comes up with a metric ton of good characters. It’s just a pet peeve that’s developed over the years.
We probably got mistranslation. Not “power of law” but “power of order” or “power of harmony” as position to chaos/entropy. Don’t go DND terminology here as law is opposite to chaos. I rly suggest “power of harmony” as position to entropy. But “power of order” would be fine
It’s not a mistranslation, the power of law is how the Holy Empire natives call the psionic power, and is called like that because it interferes with the laws of the universe. Still, it was SFBaka who decided to use this term, I simply kept using it for consistency. I don’t like the term too much either, but I don’t plan to change it. The Japanese term is 法力 in romanji houriki
Since it’s a power that bends the laws, changes the natural order (for a short time), I don’t think there’s a good equivalent in the English language. The term closest to what it is might be “supernatural power” but that’s too basic. I also think other translations would have been better, but I can’t find a good enough alternative.
