Chapter 40
Near the Magic Academy, Lute and Lilith were left speechless at the Royal Guild in the capital.
「This is an illustrious guild, you know? After all, it used to have an A-Rank adventurer as its guild master!」
The elf receptionist continued to speak with a mocking smile directed at Lute and Lilith.
「It’s not a place for students like you, you know?」
「And what are you trying to say?」
At this point, the elf receptionist chuckled.
「Just two days ago, you know?」
Lilith furrowed her brow and glared at the elf.
「…Status measurement?」
The receptionist laughed through her nose.
「Did you hear what I just said? I told you to get lost, didn’t I?」
Feeling irritated now, I also questioned the receptionist.
「What’s the meaning of this?」
「What do you mean by that? Just moments ago, a bunch of teenagers from the magic academy, struggling with their tuition fees, barged into the guild. And now, I’m stuck with the task of cleaning up their dead bodies! Do you have any idea how troublesome this is during the summer?」
Her tone had become quite harsh midway through.
It seemed she had strong feelings about handling corpses.
Lute and Lilith fell silent.
Lilith, however, fixed a stern gaze on the receptionist.
「…If we were treated like this, shouldn’t you get fired? Aren’t status measurements part of the guild regulations, at the very least?」
The receptionist chuckled at Lilith’s words.
「Fired? Why would I get fired? I’d be thanked for saving the lives of clueless students.」
Lilith then whispered to me.
「…Let’s go. It seems the guild master is not here today.」
With a smile that made her spine shiver, she continued speaking.
「And if you really want to, you can fire her.」
I shook my head.
「No, Lilith. We can’t do that.」
I lowered my head and earnestly pleaded with the receptionist.
「We won’t cause any trouble. Could you at least measure our status?」
「Measure your status, you say… Well, you should be grateful. I usually don’t even bother with small fry like you, but right now, I’m not busy since there are no real adventurers here. I’ll measure your data thoroughly, and I won’t stop until I break your spirits, just like the small fry you are.」
Even I had some issues with her choice of words.
If she measured our status data, there was no doubt she would lose her job.
My status was beyond A-Rank, and Lilith was at an A-Rank level as well, likely stronger than the guild master here.
「So, is it fine to proceed with the status measurement?」
The receptionist pulled out two crystal orbs from a corner of the guild reception, holding them under her chin, and took out a plate.
「Yes. The measurement values will be transmitted to this plate. Haha… It’s really amusing, isn’t it? You two are better suited for the Laborers’ Guild, not the Adventurers’ Guild. Do you have any idea how many inexperienced students like you have died here?」
With that, Lilith approached one of the crystal orbs without saying a word.
The receptionist continued to smile as she sipped her coffee, then glanced down at the plate she held.
「Is this okay?」
Lilith said so, still glaring at the receptionist.
Then, Lilith’s status information flowed into the receptionist’s plate.
As a result, the receptionist trembled slightly, and then…
…She spewed the coffee she had been drinking all over the place.
