Greek Legends Part 2

Asuka: (…Hmm? Is it just me, or did I just heard Kasukabe-san’s voice just now?)

Izayoi: Now, don’t go spacing out on us just yet, Ojou-sama. We’re moving to the next point of discussion now.

Asuka: Of course, I’m sorry. You can go ahead and start now.

Izayoi: Alright, the next thing on our agenda: the definition of a Demigod. As you all probably know, a Demigod is a high-ranking being born as a result of a union between a Divine Spirit and a regular human. However, back in the day when we were participating in the Harvest Festival in the Underwood, I once heard a certain story about a somewhat special birth from old man Garol. It was mainly about the Ojou-sama though.

Asuka: About me?

Alma: Certainly, Master’s origin can be said to be a bit special.

Izayoi: Here is what I heard from him at that time: 「When the Earth’s Mother Goddess bestows her blessing of fertility upon a couple that cannot normally have children, she is added as a third person to the child’s lineage which now consists of a father and mother, but of the Earth’s Mother Goddess as well」. This more or less means that 「Even if you don’t have the blood of a genuine Divine Spirit flowing through your veins, you can still become a demigod if you receive the blessing of a Divine Spirit」or at least I think that is what his words were implying. How about you, Almatea?

Alma: Yes. Even though Master’s origin is a little bit different, then it can generally be classified in the same way. I wondered myself if Master was born with the blood of a God mixed into hers, or was it that by pure chance some circumstances overlapped with one another and awakened the power of a Divine Spirit that was already dwelling inside of her.

Suzuka: (….? Hey, hey, Aya-chan, does Asuka-san have some kind of amazing bloodline, by any chance?)

Ayato: (B-Beats me. Anyway, I am a westerner myself, so I really don’t know. I’m sorry.)

Alma: In any case, it’s not that easy. When choosing to do something like that, the risk is also great for Divine Spirits as well. Ayato-san, do you know what are the risks when a member of one of the strongest races decides to reincarnate as a Human?

Ayato: Ah, y-yes, I think I do, since Scathach-sensei explained that to me. She said that 「When reincarnating as a Human, it is necessary for a Divine Spirit to sharpen its Divine Core」.

Alma: Yes, precisely. As long as a Divine Spirit is going to give life to a Demigod who’s going to be imbued with its power, there will always be some risks involved, because to give birth to a Demigod between a Human and Divine Spirit means transferring a part of that Divine Spirit into the child.

Suzuka: Huh? But in that case, does that not mean that a Divine Spirit with many children risks losing its identity as a Divine Spirit entirely? Them, why did the Greek Gods had so many children with Humans to begin with?

Nanami: …? Is having many children a bad thing?

Asuka: I-It’s not like that. However, it would make your mother have a difficult time.

Alma: Fufu… there here is a question for you. Even if it meant cutting away parts of his own Spiritual Identity each time, how was Zeus able to have so many children with Humans? Do you know the answer to that problem?

Izayoi: Don’t be so quick to underestimate me. That much is the bare minimum that every one of us should know by now. You guys, do you remember the ability possessed by the Giants that appeared during the Second Great War (Gigantomachia)?

Asterios: Divine Authority Nullification… Ah, I see! Since the Gods alone were unable to defeat the Giants, they mingled with Humans in order to create Demigods that would be able to go up against them!

Izayoi: Exactly. And the strongest of all the Demigods who played the most active part in Gigantomachia was none other than the hero Heracles.

Alma: Although he is mainly known for his most famous legends of finishing The Twelve Labors, it would be no exaggeration to say that the biggest achievement that can be attributed to Heracles’ name is the annihilation of the Giants during Gigantomachia. After all, he was the one who lead the Gods to victory in that war.

Asterios: Could it be… could it be that the truth behind Chief God’s Declaration is that Zeus continued to create one Demigod after another in order to win the war against the Giants?

Suzuka: Ueeeeh?!! If that is really the case, then that makes him the most useless father ever! This Suzuka-san absolutely won’t forgive having children simply for the sake of the war!

Alma: While it is true, that is also not the whole story, more like a single aspect of it. But it is true that in order to win against the Giants in Gigantomachia, a half-human Demigod was born.

Suzuka: Eh? Ehhhh? Is… is it really okay for such a thing to be happening!? Shoudn’t it be that Gods are supposed to love all of their children equally, even those who never knew love before…?!

Alma: You are so kind, Suzuka-san. However, this is one of those things that only those who have experienced the horrors of Gigantomachia will be able to understand. If you re curious about it still, then it might be a good idea to ask Heracles himself about it.

Izayoi: I think that pretty much everyone has grasped the general direction and the flow, but this is a story about Gigantomachia, the Second Star God War. However, the thing that we are the most interested in here is the Third Star God War, the one that depicted the battle against Demon Lord Typhon. If just giving birth to Heracles was enough to put an end to all the trouble, then the role of The Chief God’s Declaration would have ended with Gigantomachia. That’s why the mystery of the Chief God’s Declaration should still be hiding an even bigger mystery than that.

Asterios: I-I see.

Izayoi: Also, there is something that I have been wondering about for a long time now. Aside from Perseus, there surely must be other strong candidates for the title of Zeus’s firstborn child… right, Asterios?

Asterios: Right. I heard that my father, king Minos is a son of Zeus as well.

Asuka: Is that really true?!

Izayoi: Yeah. Even though it was at roughly the same time as Perseus, king Minos was born earlier of the two of them. Despite this, I think that the reason for why King Minos was excluded from the position of the firstborn child was because his origin was different than the other two. Perhaps his origin was so special that it can be said that even though he’s a child of Zeus, he’s not really a child of Zeus. So, after so lving all of these elements, the mystery of the Chief God’s Declaration should finally come to light. With that in mind, we will begin the examination of the final issue after a short break.

To be continued.
