That was the moment when things got a bit awkward. None of the two knew what to say to keep the conversation going, and without the topic to talk about, the discussion couldn’t be continued.

Ignoring Tokuteru, Izayoi stood from his seat, went to the counter in front of the entrance, grabbed the newspaper Don Bruno was reading just a moment ago, spreading it on the table and flipping the page while supporting his head by resting his cheek against his fist. After flipping through enough pages to finally reach the report on the damages done by the typhoon, he tapped one part of the article with his finger.

「See this here? Two million people and counting fell victim to the typhoon incident. Good grief, I knew the number of casualties would be high, but to this extent? That’s something that even I didn’t expect, and that alone should tell you how serious of a matter it is. So excuse me for my selfishness, but if at all possible, I would like to settle this matter with my own hands.」

「I get why you’re so angry, but please do not forget that our main priority for now is finding a way for you to return to Little Garden. Do not worry, we will handle the problems caused here in the outside world. Now that the Celestial Beast has been returned to Little Garden, it is our duty to deal with the aftermath of its…」

Tokuteru wanted to continue, but he got interrupted by the clunky sound of the restaurant’s sliding door being opened, revealing the face of a beautiful tanned woman who was carefully peaking inside.

「Forgive me for barging in before the opening hours, but may I know if Tokuteru Mikado is here?」

「Hmm? Is that you, Pritt? I’m right here.」

Seeing the woman at the door, who was apparently called Pritt, Tokuteru called out to her. When he heard that name, something in Izayoi’s mind made him ponder if perhaps he heard it wrong.

「Pritt, as in Prithvi Mata? Oi oi oi, so you’re telling me that not only I have to deal with you (Taishakuten) now, but with the Great Mother Goddess of Hinduism as well?! If it was just you alone I could have let it slide, but now this whole matter looks a lot fishier, so out with it: what is it that you assholes are plotting?」

Although he was rather offensive in his way of addressing literal Gods, Pritt simply laughed it off with a giggle as she placed her hand on her cheek.

「It’s rude of you to assume that we are, to put it with your own words, “plotting” anything, Sakamaki Izayoi. All we are doing is giving it our best to live just like the other denizens of the mortal world.」

「That’s right. She is nothing special or exceptional in any way at all. Right now, she is nothing more than just your average member of my mercenary company, nothing more, nothing less.」

「Okay, all right, see, I’m going to need you to stop this bullshittery right now. There are limits to how big of a shameless liar someone can be, and you just went waaay past that limit. No matter how hard you will try to sugarcoat it, I am not going to believe that something big is not going on when the two members of the infamous 12 Deva Guardians formation to gather in one place at a time.」

Hearing Izayoi’s comment, the two of them really had to give it their utmost not to burst out with laughter. But for all intents and purposes, Izayoi was essentially right, because both Tokuteru and Pritt were the Divine Spirits belonging to one of the most prominent and powerful Communities across the entire Little Garden: 『Twelve Devas』, a Community formed first and foremost of the strongest Gods of War inhabiting the lands belonging to the Asian region. Prithvi Mata for example, was one of the oldest and most powerful Gods belonging to the Indian pantheon, referred to as its Mother Goddess. Although she is most famously known as the Goddess of Fertility, she only became known as such after the Earth and the Heavens were separated from one another. The true nature of her being lies in another field entirely. Her true purpose, and the sole reason for her existence, was to spread the agriculture across every human civilization since the dawn of time, and, by extension, create those civilizations as well. As one of the 12 Asian guardian deities dealing with such abnormalities as the one they had on their hands now was probably one of her missions as well, since it concerned agriculture as well.

「I have heard a lot of stories about you, Sakamaki Izayoi, both the ones praising you for your heroism and the ones scorning you for being the most problematic problem children. Hailed as a Hero who was summoned to Little Garden 3 years ago and defeated 5 Demon Lords, including the infamous Evil God of Zoroastrianism, Azi-Dahaka.」

「I want to say that I appreciate the flattery, but I was not the one who kicked Dahaka’s ass into oblivion.」

「I am well aware of that. All that I’m saying is that your name as a representative of the 『No-Name』 Community has become well known all across Little Garden.」

「Once again, some of the info you seem to have if heavily outdated, but forget about that for now.」

Feeling that clarifying all the misconceptions about him would be a fool’s errand, Izayoi decided to drop the subject entirely while Pritt laughed while covering her mouth with her hand, obviously satisfied with the results of their little discussion. Sitting next to them, she pointed at the article in the newspaper.

「How about we finish the friendly gossip already? I just confirmed that the traces left by the beast that rampaged through the city yesterday belonged to the 『Bull of Heaven』 indeed.」

「Great, I’m glad to see that there is actually a God who is not totally incompetent here. So, what else did you learn? What’s the situation?」

「It first appeared in the sea near the coast of South America, from where it travelled to the north along the coastline until it eventually reached the island of Crete. But instead of stopping there like it was expected to do, it continued its travel further, hitting the regions of West and Southeast Asia on its way to Japan.」

「Uh-huh, so far everything you’ve said checks up with the things written in here. Now, what about the viral outbreak and the crop damage?」

「Generally speaking, the virus possesses an unusually high infection rate. Going by the symptoms displayed by the infected, it was classified as a type of smallpox that was also able to infect plants.」

「Smallpox? I thought that particular disease was supposed to be extinct since long ago.」

「Is it now?」

Pritt wandered about what Izayoi told her. Looks like she was also not up to date with the history of the modern world, which was strange, since India, the country she was put in charge of, had a long and nasty history of smallpox ripping it a several new ones, which made his astonishment all the bigger. Scratching his head and sighing heavily, he proceeded to explain it to her.

Smallpox, one of the viral diseases that rivaled the Black Death and the Spanish Flu when it came to the amount of deaths it caused. It was a deadly airborne virus with a mortality rate of over 40%, able to spread further even through the physical contact with open wounds or pus. Even if those infected by it managed to make a complete recovery, they would still bear the ugly-looking scars mainly on their faces, damaging the afflicted both in the physical and mental sense. Even Japan had an anecdote related to it, the one in which none other than the famous Masamune Date had the sight in one of his eyes robbed from it by smallpox.

「In order to get rid of the smallpox, humanity used a similar virus called cowpox. The patients were being injected with it before the could contact smallpox, which made them immune to it as a result. I heard rumors that the remnants of it have been collected and are now being kept under strict supervision in the research facilities scattered across the entire world.」

「I see. So to summarize, smallpox was a type of disease similar to cowpox, which only occurred in cows before humans began to inject themselves with it to make themselves immune to smallpox. It’s quite complicated, but I think I finally understand. Thank you very much for clearing that up for me, Mr. Izayoi.」

「………..」

「……………………」

「What is it? Have I said something wrong?」

「No, no, it’s nothing, it’s just that…. You know, maybe we should proceed to the next matter at hand, don’t you think?」

The matter Izayoi was talking about was related to The Sun Authorities, or to put it in simpler terms, the Twelve Zodiac Constellations.
