Last Embryo Volume 4 Chapter 6 Part 8
「Yes, but only on the condition that the peculiarities of the Albino people really will have such an effect of Star Particle Bodies as a whole and it was not something that was patient-specific. . . . . but still, this is something that should have been investigated openly with the official help of governments and research institutes, not cannibal organizations from the dark side of society. Seriously, I cannot even comprehend how did such an organization managed to stay afloat for so long? Even if they were operating from behind the scenes to avoid exposure as much as possible, what they managed to pull off required enormous amounts of authority and funding, so how did they managed to do it? Did they have someone else supporting them from the shadows?」
Despite Homura’s clear disgust and indignation towards the cannibals who experimented on Albinos from Izayoi’s past, his thoughts remained as calm and rational as ever, so Izayoi simple kept quiet and listened to his musings and thought processes.
「I think we can safely assume that monetary gain was not their main motive, because if they wanted to make money on those experiments, they would have taken them in an entirely different direction. That, and also the series of recent incidents involving Star Particle Bodies was too unorthodox, but their results should speak for themselves.」
『Bull of Heaven’s』 rampage throughout the world and the pseudo-smallpox virus that it was spreading have clearly shown that when placed in the wrong hands, Star Particle Bodies had the potential to be incredibly dangerous if anyone ever decided to use them as a sentient biological weapon again. And to add more fuel to the fire, if the information that the cultivation of the Star Particle Bodies in the hosts afflicted with albinism were to be leaked to the public and spread around. . .
「But, to be honest, I do not know what I should be thinking about their actions. No matter how you would look at it, currently the only people who would benefit from the shortening of the research time of Star Particle Bodies would be myself and the research team from 「Everything Company」. I highly doubt those who decided to experiment on Black Albinos did not know about that, and yet, their actions and attempts at shortening the research process clearly contradict that assumption. . . it really does not make a lick of sense to me.」
Just like Homura was saying, their enemy’s actions, which were clearly aimed towards improving the process of manufacturing Star Particle Bodies and putting them on the lips of the general public made no sense to him. The way everything was proceeding, the only ones who would benefit from that turn of events would be Homura and his research team at 「Everything Company」, so it was no surprise that the enemy’s plans and philosophy in regards to Star Particle Bodies could not be comprehended by him. Even now, after he tried to make several different deductions from several different approaches from several different angles, he could not have figured out what would their reasons for doing so be.
「Unless. . . yeah, that just might be reason enough. . . 」
「Eh? You managed to figure something out?」
「They probably did that precisely because they hoped that their actions will help to convince the world to recognize the importance of your research, causing it to accelerate. That is what their purpose was.」
「That is supposed to be their purpose? Come on, Big Bro Iza, I know that you like to joke around regardless of the situation around you, but do you not see that it does not make any sense whatsoever? Is is impossible for their action to have been done with the purpose of promoting Star Particle Bodies in mind, because that would not benefit them in any plausible way!」
「No, it is not just about Star Particle Bodies. It is about something even beyond that!」
Izayoi uttered in a most serious of voices, which caused Homura to be taken aback.
「You do not mean. . . it is about pushing the plan for the construction of the Enviornmental Control Tower forward?!」
「Yeah, I am afraid so. Have there been any movements on that front?」
「If you really thought that there was going to be some real progress with it then please, do not be stupid. Lady Ayato’s father is awfully enthusiastic about the whole project, but he has not even decided where he ultimately wants to build the damn thing, and the matter of him obtaining an actual permission to build it in the first place is still pretty much in the air, so for the time being the project remains more of a dream than an actual undertaking. And even if he were to hurry and got all of the necessary preparations and permissions, then the process of building the tower itself would still take at least one hundred more years.」
Homura then laughed at a grown-up man still having such ambitious dreams that were borderlining on childish delusions.
Preparations for the construction of the Enviornmental Control Tower that would then be used to spread the Star Particle Bodies around the world will be even more complicated then the process of creating Star Particle Bodies themselves. In order to turn that dream into reality, the research team at Everything Company has to come up with and develop a reliable method of mass-producing Star Particle Bodies themselves, obtain the approval from literally every country that they would be reaching, and take care of informing the general public around the world that despite many concerns that will eventually rise, Star Particle Bodies are harmless to human bodies. And let us not forget that the religious and ideological issues around them will be a whole different can of worms that will also have to be dealt with at some point in time. But these are all what-ifs and future scenarios for the time being, because right now, Homura’s research team has not even come up with a reliable method of mass-production despite all their funding and resources. If he were to examine the Albino girl who was now sleeping just a hand’s reach away from him, but if at all possible, he preferred not to put any more strain on her than it was absolutely necessary. Now that he managed to save her life, she should be living it out however she herself saw fit, removed from research and dangerous experiments that were carried out on her against her will.
From a purely scientific standpoint this is not an ideal thing to do, but if making progress on the research of Star Particle Bodies would entail destroying the lives of innocent people in order to make that happen, then it would be infinitely better to take a more roundabout but safer approach. Yes, that is how it is supposed to be. Results obtained by dirtying your hands are no results at all. Therefore, the research of Star Particle bodies should proceed slowly, at its own pace.
「For the time being, I think it would be best if we send her to Canaria Family Home, where the bad guys will not be able to lay their hands on her anymore. And since we helped that bastard Tokuteru deal with the matter of his colossal debt, then he should have no qualms about helping us by acting as the orphanage’s bodyguard for a while – absolutely for free of course – and even if he did, then we will just force him to go along with it. . . . but you know what, since I refuse to let go of the matter of my money getting embezzeled, then maybe I should actually make him pay me for guarding the orphanage? Yeah, that might just work pretty nicely. . . . . . 」
「Homura.」
Izayoi cut off Homura’s stream of words halfway with a single word, spoken in such a tone that clearly conveyed that he should stay quiet to hear what he wanted to say to him. It was but a single word, and Homura’s name at that, but it bore with it a certain heaviness.
「I understand what you are trying to say. With that in mind, allow me to ask you a question.」
「? ? ? ? ?」
「Now that you know what the reasons and motivations behind the actions of our enemies are. . . . . .should we really be proceeding with the plan to build the Enviornmental Control Tower?」
「Well, I. . . e-even if you say that. . . 」
Homura made a troubled face as he scratched his head. Come to think of it, Scathach made exactly the same kind of assumptions before.
