Volume 10 Chapter 277
B-Rank Adventurer Johann (2/3)
The next day, as I waited in the amphitheatre attached to the Adventurers’ Guild, Haruto and his group arrived for their promotion exam.
Seeing them up close again, they all seemed stronger than me.
After doing this adventurer thing for a while, you can judge instantly whether the person facing you is stronger or not.
I’m a level 92 high-ranking knight, but they all felt stronger to me.
There’s this cute girl named Luna. She seems like the weakest in Haruto’s group, but even if I were to fight her one-on-one, I doubt I could win.
And yet, I’m supposed to oversee their promotion exam. It’s ridiculous.
Well, whatever. The enemies they’ll face in the exam are just slimes. With Haruto’s group, it’ll be over in an instant.
It doesn’t matter who oversees the exam; the result won’t change, so it should be fine.
—-Or so I thought.
Something unbelievable happened right before my eyes.
Haruto and his group lost to the slimes.
All of them.
They were either defeated by the slimes or restrained by them.
I couldn’t believe it.
──***──
First, Yoko’s party, who attacked the slimes at the start, seemed to deliver quite strong blows, but none of them affected the slimes.
Then suddenly, the slimes disappeared.
—-No, they didn’t disappear. They moved at such an incredible speed that they got behind Yoko’s party and immobilised them in an instant.
I was watching the exam from a distance to get a bird’s eye view, so I managed to catch sight of the slimes after they got behind Yoko’s party.
At that speed, it’s understandable to lose sight of them.
Slimes… … can they really move that fast?
At least I’ve never seen slimes move that fast before.
After that, a series of astonishing events unfolded.
When Yoko’s party was restrained, Luke’s party entered combat mode to help them.
Another slime, different from the one restraining Yoko’s party, appeared before Luke’s party.
This slime was dangerous too.
Even after Luke unleashed a class of lightning magic I’ve never seen before—calling it 『Ultimate Thunder』—the slime remained unfazed.
If I remember correctly, Ultimate Thunder is the highest-level lightning magic. It’s questionable why someone who just became an adventurer can use such magic, but more than that, it was absurd how the slime withstood it.
Then, after the one called Ryuushin was beaten up by the slime, he received healing from his comrades and then transformed half of his body into that of a dragon.
He’s probably of the dragonewt.
Despite travelling all over the world, I’ve never encountered a dragonewt. That’s how rare they are.
By the way, dragonewts are supposed to be extremely strong. After all, they’re hybrids of dragons—meaning the strongest monsters which are S-rank.
Ryuushin, now a half-human half-dragon, was boosted with what seemed to be support magic by Luke’s party members.
Ryuushin was covered with crackling lightning, wind, and light.
It was incredible.
He looked incredibly strong.
And then Ryuushin was—-
Easily defeated.
As he charged towards the slime in front of him, another slime extended its tentacles and entangled Ryuushin’s legs.
The high-speed dive from face to floor must have been incredibly painful for Ryuushin.
But with that, the formation where one party faced one slime was broken.
Watching all this unfold, Haruto’s group also joined the fight.
The ensuing battle……
How should I put it?
It was insane.
It was on a different level.
It felt like watching a battle between a Demon Lord and a Hero.
I’ve never seen either a Demon Lord or a Hero, but… … well, it was such an abnormal battle unfolding before my eyes.
As the supervisor of the exam, I have a duty to intervene if the rookies are in serious trouble.
And it was obvious they were in deep trouble.
But… … it was impossible for me.
With only the strength of a B-rank, I couldn’t stop a battle between a Demon Lord and a Hero!
Or rather, it didn’t make sense for me to be here unscathed.
I thought I’d vanish from this world just from the shockwave of the magic Haruto directed at the slimes.
And yet, I was unharmed.
The amphitheatre, except for the floor, was mostly intact.
The cause became apparent.
When the woman named Citri unleashed her explosive magic, a huge transparent dome appeared, centred around the area where Haruto and his group were fighting.
It was a『Magic Barrier』probably activated by several advanced mages working together.
I was outside that dome, so I was safe.
Of course, I didn’t know for sure.
The dome was so transparent that it wasn’t until the smoke cleared that I could see its shape, and it perfectly contained the aftermath of the battle, which was a fight for the fate of this world.
There’s no way the mages in our guild, even the top A-rank adventurers, could pull off such a feat.
Thanks to that magic barrier that appeared out of nowhere, the amphitheatre, the adventurer guild nearby, and the country of Glendale were all protected.
If it weren’t for that—-
Glendale probably would’ve been destroyed.
That’s what I thought as I could only watch, praying for Haruto’s group to win.
As the battle grew more intense, there were several large explosions.
And when the smoke cleared—-
Haruto’s group was lying defeated.
Yoko and Citri’s party members were all restrained by slime tentacles.
