Volume 6 Chapter 137
Haruto and the Four Heroes (2/7)
I asked the god of another world to transfer me to the girl who called 『me』 – Tina.
The divine transference felt like hurtling through a pitch-black tunnel at an astonishing speed. After a few seconds, the darkness gave way to a bright environment.
Standing before me was a wolf-like creature with numerous openings—a monstrous being known as a Warwolf.
It was feasting on the entrails of a fallen man on the ground. I recognized this wolf to be undeniably an enemy of humans.
With the sword bestowed to me by the god as a token of divine favor, I swung it down on its neck with all my might.
With a dull thud, the wolf’s head rolled to the ground.
For the first time in my life, 『I』 felt perturbed by having taken the life of an animal.
However, I heard the girl’s anguished cry, and it immediately spurred me into action. The Warwolf was a level 60 creature, and even though it was an ambush, defeating it raised 『my』 level to 35.
As levels increased, some injuries were healed, and even abnormal conditions were cured. This effect helped ease my unease and fear, allowing 『me』 to move with greater composure.
A short distance away, a carriage could be seen with several mercenaries fiercely battling the Warwolves to protect their cargo.
「She’s a half-elf I bought for a hundred gold coins! Protect her at all costs!」
A burly man, donning the attire of a merchant, was fervently cheering on the surrounding mercenaries. However, the monsters encircling them were overwhelmingly formidable.
「Gyaaaah!」
「T-These creatures are too fast!」
「My arm! It’s gone!」
Seven wolf-like creatures in total. I had dispatched one, and it appeared that the mercenaries had taken down two, but there were still four wolves left.
One of the wolves attacked a mercenary who tried to fend it off with his sword, but another wolf managed to bite into his neck, dragging him down to the ground. The mercenary’s carotid artery was torn, and he immediately ceased to move. Presumably, he was the leader. The remaining mercenaries lost their cohesion and their numbers dwindled.
Eventually, only the merchant remained.
「S-Stop! Stay away!」
His desperate plea fell on deaf ears, and he was set upon by three wolves. At that moment, 『I』concealed my presence and silently disposed of one of the wolves.
Thanks to the god-given sword, I could decapitate the monster without making a sound.
The remaining three wolves were busy devouring the merchant’s body. Capitalizing on this opportunity, 『I』climbed into the cargo area of the carriage.
Inside, Tina was trembling, tears streaming down her face.
「It’s alright, I will definitely protect you」
I gently caressed Tina’s head and used the sword to cut through the chain that bound her hands. As expected, the sword granted by the god sliced through the iron chain effortlessly.
「Who, who are you?」
「I am Haruto, the one called. Now, let’s get out of here!」
I held Tina’s hand and guided her towards the entrance of the cargo area. Peering outside from there, I saw that the three wolves were still surrounding the merchant’s lifeless body.
First, I climbed down from the carriage, and then I gently assisted Tina in getting down to escape—-
The wolves, with their keen sense of smell and hearing, weren’t about to let us slip away.
With the carriage as our backdrop, Tina and I found ourselves encircled by the wolves. I positioned Tina behind me and wielded the sword to fend them off.
Tina was trembling.
I must protect this young girl at all costs.
—- At that moment, a surge of power overwhelmed me.
The one and only skill granted by the god, the 『Guardian』had been triggered. This skill doubled all my attributes whenever I had someone I needed to protect standing behind me.
Having defeated two Warwolves, my level had reached 38, and with the activation of the Guardian, my stats were now equivalent to that of a level 76.
Unaware of this boost, one of the wolves lunged at me. Thanks to my heightened stats, their attack seemed slow.
I deflected its claws with the sword and sliced through its torso as it passed by. Spilling its entrails, the wolf collapsed to the ground, never to rise again.
Only two remained—-
That’s when I let my guard down.
The pack leader, the boss, had been hiding. It shot a fireball at me, injuring my right arm and causing me to drop my sword.
Some high-level Warwolves could use magic, and 『I』had no way of knowing this mere moments after being transported to this world.
Sacrificing its comrades, the boss aimed a fireball at a timing where I couldn’t dodge. Although only one enemy remained, I couldn’t wield my sword in my current condition.
With my right arm charred black and immobile, the boss approached me slowly.
Its allies may have been gone, but dealing with a wounded prey was no challenge—it seemed to convey that message.
Compared to the other wolves, its body was much larger. Its mouth wide open, it lunged at me, sinking its teeth into『me』.
「Guah!?」
The boss’s eyes widened.
A sword was jutting out from the back of its head. 『I』had taken out the sword from my left hand and thrust it into the boss’s neck. The sword given to me by the god was exclusive to me, and 『I』could draw it from anywhere on my body.
Having realized that the boss had hidden itself initially, I understood that it possessed considerable intelligence. So, 『I』devised a desperate plan, making it believe that I could no longer fight after losing my sword.
Somehow, all the monsters were defeated.
However, 『I』 also suffered considerable injuries. My right hand was severely burned and completely immobile, and the wound from the boss’s bite wouldn’t stop bleeding.
Tina was crying.
She holds my head in her arms, desperately chanting healing spells to ease my breathing.
However, the magic-sealing collar around her neck prevented the healing spell from activating.
「Why, why is this happening……」
Her tears won’t stop.
—It’s okay.
Tina, don’t cry.
Look, I’m here now.
Everything will be fine.
In the edge of fading consciousness, 『I』 could perceive Sarion running towards us.
