Volume 8 Chapter 216
Demon Lord Citri
I am Citri.
A daemon under the direct command of the Evil God.
I’m twelfth rank.
I am almost as powerful as Gusion, the eleventh ranked, who had infiltrated the Holy City Sanctum.
Though my rank is twelfth, among the current daemons, I am the strongest.
After all, I am the daemon destined to become the next Demon Lord.
In order to become the next Demon Lord, I received powerful blessings from the Evil God, so now I am significantly stronger than Gusion. Of course, that means I am also stronger than any other daemons.
I already possessed power equal to that of past Demon Lords, but I had not yet ruled over the human world as a Demon Lord.
The reason for this was because the Evil God held me back.
It seemed that the Evil God still had plenty of negative energy in supply, so there was no rush to make me the Demon Lord.
Therefore, I waited.
After a hundred years, the Demon Lord Beleth was defeated by the hero.
Finally, my turn had come.
At last, it’s my debut as a Demon Lord!
—Or so I thought, but I was stopped once again.
It seems that the Evil God is concerned about the existence of heroes.
Demon Lord Beleth was originally a daemon ranked thirteenth. Despite being one rank lower than me, there wasn’t much difference in power between us.
However, despite receiving blessings from the Evil God just like me, Beleth was swiftly slain by the hero transferred to this world by the Creator God.
Heroes are cheats by nature.
From the moment they arrive in this world, they possess the power to easily defeat high-ranking monsters, and their rate of leveling up is exceedingly higher.
In no time, they acquire the power to slaughter us daemons.
Whenever a Demon Lord reigned over this world, a hero always appeared within a few years, at most within ten years.
The moment a hero arrives in this world, the defeat of the Demon Lord is inevitable.
So, what to do?
Until the hero defeats them, the Demon Lord desperately spreads fear throughout the world and gathers negative energy.
It’s all for the sake of the Evil God.
Though the daemons who become Demon Lords are defeated by heroes, the negative energy collected until their defeat serves as nourishment to sustain the existence of the Evil God and becomes a source to prepare the next Demon Lord.
Not to say that the Evil God presumes that we daemons will be defeated.
Each time, the Evil God devises strategies for us Demon Lords to confront heroes.
However, heroes are cheats.
No matter what measures we take, they can easily overcome everything with their overwhelming stats and incomprehensible skills.
All daemons who have the potential to become Demon Lords understood this fact. They resigned themselves to it.
They couldn’t win against heroes—no matter what.
Nevertheless, for the sake of the Evil God who cared for us, the potential Demon Lords did their utmost, using all their power and cunning to spread fear and despair in the world of humans.
Demon Lord Beleth fought with numbers.
He created numerous monsters and spread them throughout the world. Individually, they were weak, but their numbers were staggering.
It was a pretty good idea.
No matter how strong the hero was, they couldn’t stop the Stampedes happening simultaneously worldwide.
Beleth was however defeated by the hero.
Because he sent monsters all over the world, he couldn’t afford to keep strong subordinates around him.
He was prepared for this though.
However, the biggest problem was that most of the monsters he sent all over the world were defeated by heroes who were not really heroes.
During Beleth’s time, not one, but two heroes appeared.
Up until this point there had always been only one hero who came to this world.
The Holy Knights and Holy Maidens who came with the heroes were quite troublesome, but the fact that two heroes came, at least as far as I know, was unprecedented.
The power of the original heroes was overwhelming.
You can tell by how fast they level up that they are real heroes.
But the man known as the Guardian Hero was the one who single-handedly crushed Beleth’s plans.
Because the speed at which he grew stronger was slower than that of a regular hero, I thought he might be the sub-hero.
The Guardian Hero flew around the world at high speed and kept stopping the Stampedes.
The half-elf woman who was with the Guardian Hero, Tina Haribel, was also troublesome.
Tina, who inherited the blood of the hero, possessed an unbelievable amount of power as well.
As a result, although the energy needed to make me the next Demon Lord had been accumulated, it seemed that the Evil God was not in a position to spare any resources.
The Evil God then came up with a new idea, to reincarnate the hero himself.
At first, I didn’t understand it, but after receiving an explanation from the Evil God, I was convinced.
Before I could reign as the Demon Lord, the Evil God would reincarnate someone from another world as a hero and curse their soul.
I thought it was a brilliant idea.
If their soul was cursed, no matter what kind of curse it was, they wouldn’t be able to become genuinely strong.
And it was a curse from the Evil God, the incarnation of unimaginable malice.
It must have been an extraordinary curse.
Presumably, the person who was reincarnated as the hero has already died, since they were under the curse of the Evil God.
It seems that the Evil God used a considerable amount of power for the hero’s reincarnation and is currently resting.
When the Evil God awoke, I was going to reign over this world as the Demon Lord and spread fear and despair.
No hero will appear for a while.
The Evil God said,『I’ve spent quite a bit of divine energy on this』.
So at least for a hundred years, this would be my world!
I was excited.
I could picture the face of the Creator God in my mind, frustrated at not being able to transfer a hero and having this beloved world ruled by me.
Finally, I can be of use to the Evil God.
—That’s what I thought.
Until that monster appeared before me.
