My Household`s Liliana-san Volume 2 Chapter 9 Part 2

And when he looked at her face, although he did not notice it right away, but the mochi that he was holding in his hand was already coated with a copious amount of yellowish powder.

「Say, Liliana-san? What is this? I don’t actually remember putting that onto my mochi?」

「Oh, this? This is kakinton topping. I originally intended for it to be one of the New Year’s dishes, but I heard that there are people out there who prefer to spread it onto toast in the form of a paste, so I tried it with mochi instead. And I must say, it goes pretty well with the natural elasticity of the mochi. Not to mention that the amount of sweetness to it is just right. I tried it, and I really liked it.」

「Kurikinton, huh? And just when such a thing even becomes a trend?」

Tatsuya mumbled to himself as he took another mochi and placed it inside of his mouth.

「Oh, yeah, which reminds me…… We really should have rented a movie or two when we still had the chance. Instead of having to rely on what’s on the TV now.」

With his stomach now full and while making himself comfortable under the kotatsu, Tatsuya rested his chin on the top of the palm of his hand while he was randomly switching the channels on the TV in search of something interesting to watch. Liliana then tilted her head while looking at him for a moment.

「Well, we can go borrow and try to borrow one or two right now, but it’s really cold out there. So, if you would rather not go out from under the kotatsu, as long as you tell me the title of the movie or write it down for me, I can go and get it for you, Tatsuya-san.」

「No, there’s no way I would ever try to trouble you like that, Liliana-san. Besides, even if we were to go now, the rental shop is bound to be closed for the day.」

「Is it really that late already? I thought that the time was still within the established business hours?」

「Well, it’s not late in the sense of the usual business hours, but it’s rather about the timing itself.」

「…… Huh? What do you mean by that, Tatsuya-san? I don’t really understand.」

「Well, what I mean here is that everyone is probably going to think the same way now. New Year’s specials are something that is mostly the same each year, and there is not all that much variety to them in the first place. There are quite a few people who get bored with them quickly because they also tend to run for a while. And so they opt to rent a movie and watch that, instead. So for various DVD rental shops, the first few days of the new year is the best possible time to rack up a huge profit, and because of that all the popular titles tend to be all rented out before you even know it, leaving nothing good behind.」

Tatsuya let out a sigh after he shared his knowledge with Liliana.

He should have been able to imagine this development like this would occur, since it was an annual event, but he was so busy spending the end of the year and the New Year holidays together with Liliana that he could not think of anything that they would require in order to be able to kill some time.

「Is that so? I was sure that everyone would be relaxing at home on New Year’s Day.」

「In the past it used to be just like that, sure. And with the festive atmosphere and the amount of New Year’s dishes being made in advance, it was a common concept that you would not be required to cook and do household chores for the first two or three days of the new year. But not anymore, I’m afraid.」

「For me, it is actually something that is really hard to imagine.」

「Yeah, I can see why.」

These days, just because it’s the New Year’s, eating out in a lavish manner, children clutching New Year’s gifts and going to the various stores in order to spend their New Year’s money —— This was the way in which the times were slowly changing, and Tatsuya suddenly felt like he was getting really old before he even knew it.

「…… Speaking of which, I have remembered hearing about that one particular custom.」

「Hmm? What is it, Liliana-san?」

「I received a package from my sister alongside the letter saying that I should enjoy traditional Japanese New Year’s games, but there are many things I don’t quite understand from that. So, I thought that maybe we could take a look at it together?」

「Of course. It’s been a while since I last heard about them or played some of those myself, so I’m rather curious as to what they are.」

In a sense, it could be said that Liliana’s timing was more than perfect with that matter.

「Right, then please wait here for a moment, Tatsuya-san. I shall bring it here right away.」

After saying that, Liliana quickly headed for her room and soon returned with a fairly large cardboard box in her hands.

「It’s a pretty big box, why did your sister send so many things, Liliana-san?」

「At first, I think she wanted to send me a select few things, but I imagine that she had trouble deciding and ultimately decided to send me over everything that she could get her hands on. It would be really in-character of a thing for her to do.」

Liliana had a wry smile on her face while saying that, but since her sister had done it for her, she seemed to be really happy with that outcome.

「Right, so for the time being, let’s check the contents of the box. Which one should we get first?」

When they opened the box, it contained a number of New Year’s toys that Tatsuya had not seen in a long time.

「Well? What do you think?」

「Hmm, that’s right. Let’s see……」

The first thing that caught Tatsuya’s eye was an assembly type kite, but he rejected it almost right away because the places where it could be flown were limited around this neighborhood due to a whole lot of electric wires.

The spinners were also put on hold for now because you needed to have a lot of knowledge about in order to play with them the way they were intended, especially when it comes to winding them up to properly control their threads.

Karuta cards were also a no-go for two people because there was no one else who would read the cards to them. Similarly, Sugoroku lacked excitement when there were too few people to participate in the gameplay.

As a result of looking around the box’s contents for a while, the process of elimination brought forth two possible choices for them to pick: hanetsuki and fukuwarai. Those were the games where having a small number of participants would not actually become that much of a problem.

「Oh, I actually happen to know what hanetsuki is all about! It is all about trying to keep the shuttlecock in the air for as long as you possibly can, right? And if you fail to do just that, you get some doodles put on you with ink, right? I actually saw a picture of that in one of the letters that my sister happened to send to me once before.」

「Yes, that actually sums it up really nicely. It was originally meant to be a game the purpose of which was to ward off evil spirits, and demons dislike the black color of the ink, apparently. And from what I can see, it not only comes with a shuttlecock and wooden palettes, but also a small set of writing ink and a brush.」

「Well then, by all means, let’s try it out!」

Liliana seemed to have been interested in this particular game from the very beginning, and so her suggestion came as a rather enthusiastic, if not an overly-enthusiastic one.

「But I must warn you, Liliana-san: I don’t know the detailed rules either, so for now, let’s just make it a sort of penalty game for the one who fails to keep the shuttlecock in the air while we alternately hit it between us.」

「Fufufu, alright. You are on, Tatsuya-san! But I won’t lose!」

「Heh, same here. I’m not going to lose, either!」

Thinking of the highly motivated Liliana with a smile on his face, they decided to play a traditional Japanese New Year’s game right here and right there.

「Hah —!!!」

「Of crap!!」

Tatsuya’s palette cut through the air in response to Liliana’s shuttlecock hitting it with a crisp and loud sound.
