「No. I only know the rules because my grandpa taught me them a long time ago.」

「Really. I’m pretty good at it. I have a sempai who likes this kind of game. I used to play with him a lot.」

「Is that perhaps Ikusaba you are talking about?」

Isshin’s face twitches in response.

「Are you and Ikusaba-san close?」

「Well, in a way. But surely Ikusaba would like this kind of thing.」

Taisei sat down in the seat across from Isshin and began arranging his pieces as well.

「Training?」

Taisei quickly reached for the carved pieces on the board, but then put his hand down.

「It’s my Nanana collection.」

With that, Isshin’s red eyes widened for a moment, and then his expression tightened again.

「Okay, I guess I had bad scouting on this one.」

「It looks like you misunderstood the ability of my Nanana collection.」

Taisei suddenly raised his right hand.

Isshin shows a surprised expression on his face because a girl wearing black clothes suddenly appears next to Taisei.

「The girl’s name is 《Intoku》 (TN: concealment), and she can make herself and others disappear. And this one is 《Dok》 . 」(TN: Angry Demon)

Taisei points to his right shoulder. Sitting there is a palm-sized yankee delinquent girl. 「She is wearing tattered armor and carries a metal rod on her shoulder. Her small size makes it obvious that she isn’t human. As if to prove this, a horn grows from her forehead.

The girl who was introduced by Taisei suddenly reached out to the pieces on the board. With a practiced hand she picked up the pawn that was on the upper right diagonally from the corner, and moved it forward one space.

The gorokuma who was watching this pressed the timer’s button with a ‘Kishaa’ to signal the start. Then the number 30 which was visible to both players began to decrease.

From here, a 30-second game of quick shogi began.

Isshin, who was surprised by Saiou’s appearance, quickly makes the second move. Gorokuma sees this and presses the timer’s button. The number on the timer resets to 30 and begins to decrease again.

Taisei (who is an amateur at shogi) doesn’t really understand, but there seems to be a somewhat fixed strategy for the beginning of the game. They both move at a good pace making ‘pachin, pachin’ sounds as they play without hesitation.

Isshin stopped for a moment as Saiou moved her silver, and looked up from the board.

「She’s strong. What is she, or rather, what is it?」

「It’s a demon. I don’t know what else to call it.」

「I didn’t know there was a Nanana collection that can summon a demon.」

With a forced smile on his face, Isshin reaches out for his knight piece.

Seeing this expression, Taisei smiles.

「This is my Nanana collection, 《the harem》.」

Isshin’s movements suddenly stop.

「H…harem?」

Isshin looked up and gave him a confused look, it made Taisei feel self conscious suddenly.

「Ugh, it’s so annoying. Complain to Nanana-san who gave it that name! I’m ashamed of that name too! For some reason though, all the demons that can be summoned from this gate are women, so it can’t be helped!」

「Why?」

「I don’t care! Tell that to the people who made this!」, yells Taisei desperate to cover up his embarrassment.

「The pendant on your chest looked like it was glowing. Is that the main body?」

「Yeah, this is it」, says Taisei as he unbuttons his shirt to show it to Isshin.

「It’s really just molded from a pattern. It’s said to be a pattern that indicates a door to seal away demons, but since it’s not convenient to carry around, I hang it from my neck like this. By the way, the official name is 《the gate of twin heavens and a thousand flowers》.」
