Over the Infinite Chapter 16 Part 3
「Test?」
「I’m going to say something that you’re probably restricted from knowing. 」
「That’s fine, but why would you know such information? 」
「Just leave that aside. 」
「Okay, go ahead. 」
「Alright, here it goes. ‘The Infinite Corridor is not a dungeon created by the Dungeon Master.’ 」
Yuki shows no reaction.
「…Uh, did you say something? 」
At least it’s confirmed that there’s some kind of inhibition happening. I’ll need to question the Dungeon Master about this.
It seems Yuki couldn’t recognize not just what I said but also the movement of my mouth.
Writing it down didn’t work either. He can’t understand what’s written.
He knows something is written and can read it, but it doesn’t sink into his mind.
「Disturbing… 」
The Dungeon Master told me to forget anything about floors beyond 100, so this information must fall under that category.
Most likely, the 1K space is outside the effect range of this perception inhibition.
Discussing it with Yuki won’t work, so let’s leave the topic of perception inhibition for now.
「Anyway, we’ve figured out the current situation. Just remember that such a rule exists. 」
「Uh, okay. I’m really curious about what you said, but… okay. It’s not some sort of indecent word that’s banned from broadcasting, right? 」
Why would I randomly start spouting erotic words to you?
「So, what are you going to do about your class? 」
「You suddenly went back to a normal conversation. …As for the class, I’ll decide after checking my aptitude. 」
The second part of the class lecture is waiting for us next.
This time it’s to confirm our aptitude and actually join a class.
「Yeah, it makes sense. You know, after our earlier conversation, I’m debating whether or not to remove (Swordsman) with the ((Power Slash)) skill from my options. 」
「It’s hard to decide you’ll pick something else because it reduces the number of skills you can learn, especially after you find out you have the aptitude for it. 」
I wish there was something similar, though.
-3-
To acquire a class, we moved to a room that was far from a typical fantasy setting, looking more like something out of sci-fi. The room was surrounded by unidentifiable computers, and in the center stood a monolithic stone pillar that looked familiar. It was the exact same one we used when we visited the Dungeon Master’s room.
「…What’s this? 」
「This is the device used to acquire a class. By touching this device, a list of classes for which you currently have an aptitude will be displayed. From that list, you can select the class you wish to take on. There’s no need to decide immediately upon touching it, so go ahead whenever you’re ready. 」
Looking at Yuki, he seemed a little scared.
「Alright, I’ll go first. 」
「Please place your hand over this part of the device. 」
Doing as Verner instructed, several system messages appeared in my view.
「Only the user can see those. Given the possibility that you may not want me to know, I’ll step out for now. The room is soundproof, so feel free to discuss. If you have questions or when you’re done, please call out to me. 」
With that, Verner left the room. While the job one takes up can be seen from their card, I suppose some people wouldn’t want to share their aptitude information, making it a matter of manners.
「How’s it looking? 」
「Not as many as I thought. There’s a simple description for each. 」
Displayed were:
(Warrior)
Primarily fights using one-handed weapons. A lightweight frontline class.
When paired with a small shield, they can acquire a wide range of combat techniques.
Main Skills Acquired: ((Warrior’s Condition)) ((Warrior’s Knowledge))
(Swordsman)
Specializes in all categories of swords, from short swords to two-handed broadswords. A lightweight frontline class with a more offensive role than a warrior.
Main Skills Acquired: ((Swordsmanship)) ((Power Slash))
(Gladiator)
A lightweight frontline class that acquires combat skills primarily for single opponents. They acquire many self-enhancement skills and powerful single-target attack skills.
Main Skills Acquired: ((Powerful Strike)) ((Single-Target Combat))
(Fighter)
Uses heavy weapons and armor and supports the front line as a heavyweight frontline class. Specializes more in robust defense and HP than agility.
Main Skills Acquired: ((Full-Power Strike)) ((Life Force Enhancement))
(Axe Warrior)
A fighter specialized in axes among the heavyweight frontline classes. They use hand axes, two-handed axes, and throwing axes and are attackers with powerful attack strength.
Main Skills Acquired: ((Axe Technique)) ((Strike Axe))
(Cargo)
Acquires expansion skills such as increasing the capacity of the ((Item Box)) skill and adding features. A support class that does not acquire combat methods.
Main Skills Acquired: ((Weight Reduction)) ((Item Storage))
(Grappler)
A fighting class specialized in unarmed combat, mainly skilled in choking and joint techniques.
Main Skills Acquired: ((Joint Destruction)) ((Sleeper Hold))
There are seven in total. Honestly, I feel like I’d be fine with either (Warrior), (Swordsman), (Gladiator), (Fighter), or (Axe Warrior).
The (Grappler) class might be influenced by the cat-eared combat, but it’s tough to specialize in person-to-person combat. It’s no joke to use only joint locks and strangulation techniques against monsters.
The ((Item Box)) is attractive, but (Cargo) is also tough. Judging from the description, it’s not that other classes can’t use the ((Item Box)), but this class can make even better use of it.
And honestly, I’m relieved that there’s no (Berserker) class.
「For now, shall I take a look at mine as well?” 」
Without selecting my class yet, Yuki’s classes are displayed.
I can’t see it, but according to Yuki, the (Swordsman) and (Cargo) classes are the same as mine. The rest are:
(Dual Swordsman)
Wields short weapons such as daggers and small swords in both hands and engages in combat. Known for quick attack speed, mainly through their continuous attack skills.
Main Skills: ((Dual Dagger)) ((Fast Blade))
(Scout)
Assists with perimeter surveillance, reconnaissance, trap removal, and unlocking. Though combat abilities are minimal, it can learn both attack and support skills.
Main Skills: ((Unlocking)) ((Trap Disarming))
(Thrower)
A rearguard that specializes in throwing attacks like stones and javelins without using bows. They have skills to improve throwing speed and hit rate.
Main Skills: ((Speed Shoot)) ((Throwing Technique))
(Toolmaster)
A support role skilled in item use. It can strengthen item effects, improve usage speed, increase range, and can also learn basic production skills.
Main Skills: ((Tool Knowledge)) ((Healing Potion Effect Up))
(Surveyor)
A support class skilled at creating maps. In addition to the skill of obtaining accurate map information, they can also acquire low-level skills for crafting items like paper and ink.
Main Skills: ((Terrain Grasp)) ((Map Making))
To be honest, (Dual Swordsman) or (Scout) would be the only options.
But what is this feeling…
「We both seem pretty plain」
「Yeah, I wish there was a class with a bit more of a teenage fantasy flair」
I wanted something unique like a (Sword Saint), (Martial God), or (Sage).
If I had to choose, it would be <Dual Swordsman>, but that class wasn’t so minor since even the cat-eared used dual swords.
Isn’t there a <Ninja> class, Nin Nin?
But there’s no point in just talking, so we call Werner inside to start asking. There’s no need to hide our aptitude classes.
「What can I help you with? 」
「I’ve got a few questions. First, I heard that the class that learns the ((Rapid Rush)) is the (Raider), but it’s not on Yuki’s list of available classes. Can you not have an aptitude for a skill you’ve learned? 」
I’m sure the cat-eared girl said it was (Raider). There’s nothing on Yuki’s list of classes that sounds like a misunderstanding.
「That’s a tricky question. Actually, there’s something called tree classes, which aren’t covered in this training. They’re bigger categories than these classes. For example, (Warrior) and (Swordsman) are part of the (Light Warrior) tree class. The (Raider) is in one of those tree classes. 」
It was beyond the scope of the lecture, so I couldn’t keep up.
「Well, it might be a bit hard to understand based on the information we’ve covered so far, but actually, once you reach an intermediate rank, within this tree class, you can add another class. For instance, if Tsuna acquires the (Swordsman) class, and after further training meets certain conditions, he can also acquire the (Warrior) class simultaneously. 」
「So, if they’re similar classes, you can eventually obtain multiple classes? 」
「Yes. (Raider) includes tree skills like (Scout) and (Trapper). 」
In that case, Yuki originally needed to become a (Scout) to acquire ((Rapid Rush)).
So, it’s structured like a tree, as the name suggests.
「I heard from my trial companion that the acquisition of ((Rapid Rush)) is at (Raider) Lv15, what does that mean? 」
「The level of the tree class is the sum of the encompassed classes. At about Lv15 it doesn’t matter much, but to put it simply, whether it’s (Scout) Lv15 or (Trapper) Lv15, you’ll acquire ((Rapid Rush)). In the system, even if it’s broken down to (Scout) Lv10 and (Trapper) Lv5, you’d acquire it. Though, such a situation is unlikely. 」
I see. It’s a bit hard to understand, but I got the gist.
At present, other than (Scout), there are no (Raider) classes in Yuki’s suitable classes, so all we need to know is that (Raider) = (Scout).
By the way, although it might not matter, I also learned about the tree structure of other classes.
■(Light Warrior)
├(Warrior)
├(Swordsman)
├(Dual Swordsman)
└(Gladiator)
■(Heavy Warrior)
├(Fighter)
└(Axe Warrior)
■(Shooter)
└(Thrower)
■(Martial Artist)
└(Grappler)
■(Adventurer)
├(Porter)
├(Tool User)
└(Surveyor)
Even if you obtain a second class, it seems like it would still fall under a similar category. So, there’s no need to worry about the initial direction.
The more information that’s available, the clearer it becomes. There’s a clear distinction between combat and support roles.
