Chapter 16 Part 3

「As the two suddenly dropped out, it was us, the student council, that was troubled. Article 9-2 of the Student Council Regulations states, 『In the event a vacancy occurs in an officer’s position due to unavoidable circumstances, the remaining officers may fill the vacancy with a replacement by consensus』. In the remaining half a year, well, we have summer break in between, so in effect, just a little less than five months, we have to try to see if there are any new second or third year boys who are interested in joining the student council, but as of right now, we have not gotten any good answer yet, you see. As what the treasurer girl did seemed to have spread as a rumor. And while we were in such a bind, we happened to come across you during yesterday’s incident.」

「That was a surprise, wasn’t it?」

The figure of Yuu participating in the mini-game seemed to have attracted more attention than expected, not only from the basketball club, but also from the neighboring volleyball club, and even girls from other clubs who had hurried over to join them.

Now that he heard about it, Yuu felt even more embarrassed.

「Boys and girls live while being strictly separated from each other until middle school. As they are entering the age of puberty, I believe this is an inevitable measure to keep problems from occurring, but the boys and girls who have just entered our school are still in a state of unfamiliarity with each other. So, I believe you have already heard that we plan to get them used to each other little by little through events during the first year. Putting that into consideration, I think someone like you, who can comfortably mix with the girls at this stage, is extremely special, Hirose-kun.」

「Is, is that so? Hmm, I think I was not really aware of it.」

Unable to say that the person inside had been replaced, Yuu had no choice but to laugh it off.

「As I explained earlier, the student council has to negotiate with various people, be it the school or the various clubs. And most of them are women. That is to say, a boy who can speak normally without cowering, even if the other party is a number of women, is preferable. And the fact that you have already cleared this point is our greatest reason for recruiting you, Hirose-kun.」

Boys, who were few in number, precious and protected, were afraid of girls, who were overwhelmingly more numerous than them.

This was obvious even when Yuu looked at his classmates.

As one would expect, through enrolling at a co-ed school, they would probably get used to it over the months and years, but even so, boys who would actively involve themselves with girls were probably few in number.

Back in his former world, Yuu was not necessarily good at treating women, but now that he had been reborn with excellent appearance and was receiving courteous treatments from girls, he had gained some confidence.

Besides, it was not that he lived for 40 years, and even managed to get married, for nothing. Even if it took only three years for it to fall apart.

Even if he was very ordinary on the inside, his looks and environment more than made up for it.

Sayaka continued with her story.

「I am changing the topic, but I would like to tell you about the club activities of the sports clubs, the main clubs of our school. It is related to the fact that we have PE department, but it is safe to say that each sports club, be it baseball club, softball club, football club, and so on, has reached powerhouse level in the prefecture.」

Now that she mentioned it, Yuu recalled hearing that the basketball team had also made it all the way to the top four or the top eight.

「It is common with other co-ed schools in the prefecture, but we rarely make it to the national tournament, and always come one or two steps short of making it. Do you know why?」

「Huh?」

Yuu tilted his head.

Based on the knowledge from his former world, even in the world of high school sports, there was a tendency where private schools, into which they could dump money, were stronger.

As expected, I guess that’s just how it is; or so Yuu thought, but….

「Those girls’ school bunch, they bear constant enmity against co-ed school like ours, and when we play against them, they would go at us without thinking of the consequences, that is why!」

「It’s no-brainer that they’d come at us with their ace players, but they’d even do dangerous play that is borderline foul play. Just watching it made me angry.」

Riko and Eimi said in a chagrin-filled tone.

「Girls’ school, was it?」

「They are envious and jealous of us for being related to men. In fact, the more zealous the girls are in their club activities, the more alienated they are from boys. Even so, they are still doing their best. And yet, just because we have boys in the same school as us, girls’ schools bear constant enmity toward co-ed schools. And then, in terms of percentage, girls’ schools are by far more numerous than co-ed schools. So even if the co-ed schools, including our school, boast excellent abilities, they tend to be at a disadvantage because the further they advance, the more severe their exhaustion becomes.」

The resentment involving men is that strong, huh.

Even back in his former world, Yuu had heard stories of guys from boys’ schools being envious of those from co-ed schools, but he did not think he had heard a part where they would do things like coming at them in a club match because of it.

No, perhaps this is a situation unique to this world; Yuu could only think of it as such.

「In order to bounce back from that, effective coaching and very intense training… No, that is not all. I think the best way to motivate the players is by cheering them on. Especially by the boys, you see. In fact, there was a precedent in which, three years ago, when a co-ed school in the southern part of the prefecture took the trouble to mobilize a male cheerleading squad – so I say, but it seems that there were only about a dozen of them, though – during the softball club’s prefectural preliminary round finals, they triumphed over the top-seeded girls’ school in an upset and won the championship. Since then, upon realizing the great significance of sending boys to cheer at the matches of sports clubs, where there are only girls, as opposed to cultural clubs that boys sometimes join from the start, co-ed schools have been striving to implement this system. But this is quite a challenging endeavor.」

「Leaving the first or second round aside, the more we advance, they more crowded the venue becomes, and when hundreds or thousands of girls gather, looking for boys who would take the trouble to go there is a bit, you see….」

Seeing it from the opposite perspective and comparing it to the composition where a dozen or so girls were surrounded by thousands of men in the audience seats at a game where the entrance to the Koshien was at stake, it made sense.

Not to mention amidst the crowds that were heating up as they cheered them on, those who could stay calm in such a situation were probably the strange ones.

As expected, it was unheard of in the student world, but brawl between cheering squads outside the stadium was a common occurrence in the pro world, so he could relate to their feeling of not wanting to get involved in such a thing.

「In other words, you are wondering what you should do to get the boys to cheer?」

「Considering yesterday’s occurrence, I thought you would be perfect for the task, though, Hirose-kun.」

Nah, I’m just special, and no normal boys would go that far; these words got stuck on his throat.

However, it had only been a week since he entered the school.

He needed to know more about the extent to which normal boys wanted to keep their distance from women.

Above all, the thought of not wanting to betray the feelings of Sayaka, who was staring at him with a sincere look on her face, triumphed over all other thoughts inside.

Suddenly, strength was drained from Sayaka’s expression and her mouth loosened up.

「It seems I have pushed the matter too hastily. Feel free to give me your reply at a later date. Simply being able to talk to you like this today is already making me happy, Hirose-kun.」

「Me too!」

「She is right.」

「Likewise, as I could learn various things about school, it was very beneficial for me.」

That was his completely honest feeling.

As far as Yuu was concerned, he felt as if his heart was beating faster just by looking at Sayaka’s smile, in other words, he was aware that his heart was attracted to her.

It was said that encounters were life’s treasure hunt.

If so, Yuu felt that meeting Sayaka and the others like this would become a treasure for him in his high school life from here on.
