Chapter 34 Part 1
New Students Orienteering (1) ~Romance is Unstoppable~
Orienteering was a type of outdoor sport in which participants used a map and compass to pass through points set up in the mountains and fields in a specified order and compete in the time required to go from start to finish.
It seemed to originally start as part of military training, and the basic concept was to run, not walk.
Nonetheless, the orienteering event that Yuu participated in once during his student days was a lukewarm one, with no running involved, and it was very congenial.
Before the school became a co-educational school, orienteering at Sairyou Academy was held in groups divided vertically by grade level and started on foot from the school.
It was closer to the original competitive orienteering, in which participants went around points set up in an unduly wide forest park located in the northern part of Saiou City.
That all changed when the school became co-ed.
The reason was that if they were to allow boys to participate, it was considered unfeasible to carry out the orienteering as it was.
After several years of trial and error, it was now carried out as follows.
The first-year boys would be divided and assigned to the seven girls’ classes, in which groups of two or three boys would be placed in groups of girls selected by lot drawing.
The course would go along the Saitama Natural Zoological Park as well as the area around Kosaka Station in the southern part of Saiou City.
First of all, they would depart from the school on buses divided by class.
There were two types of courses arranged, but they would go around various places in the city, temples and shrines included, either by bus or on foot.
Ultimately, the goal was to make it to a point set up in the Saitama Natural Zoological Park.
Therefore, there was no specific course order.
Second and third year students would participate as executive committee members and on site staff.
Forming security teams centered around members who were especially athletic, their main duty was to protect the first-year groups that had boys in them while they were moving on foot in the vicinity of the points.
Ultimately, it was an arrangement to ensure that the first-year boys and girls could enjoy the orienteering.
◇ ◇ ◇
As such, May 9 was the day of the New Students Orienteering.
Under a clear blue May sky, all the students dressed in their school jerseys – light purple with dark purple lines, with the school emblem and name embroidered on the chest – and gathered in the school yard.
Three student council officers, the executive committee chairperson, and several others, as well as second- and third-year boys who had volunteered to help, were filling up the headquarters. It was said that they were to keep in touch with the executive committee members and security officers (mainly sport club presidents) dispatched to each checkpoint via walkie-talkies and pagers.
In principle, this was a student-led event, but in case of emergency, the teachers were also ready to cooperate, in which not only did they have a dozen teachers, including a public health doctor, stationed in a first-aid tent at the Saitama Natural Zoological Park, they had also arranged cars for transportation.
The lots drawing to decide on the grouping of the first-year girls and boys was announced on the morning of the day of the event, so voices of joy and sorrow were echoing among the girls.
Among them, the one who raised the loudest voice of joy was the group 4 of class 1-5, to which Hiyama Youko and Aki Kazumi belonged.
「Y, you’re in our group, Hirose-kun? Yay! Given things, it’s safe to assume that we have fate with each other, right?! Kazumi!」
「Ah… Hirose-kun… I, I’m so happy. Yes. I’m so happy….」
Seeing Yuu and Rei join class 1-5 with cards marked 4 in their hands, the six members of group 4 exploded with joy and struck a gut-punch.
Three other boys were to join group 6, and the girls from the losing groups were looking at the members of the winning groups with resentful eyes.
It had been decided that five boys, including Yuu and Rei, would join class 1-5, but it was thanks to the machinations of Yuu, who belonged to the student council, that Youko’s group ended up being chosen as the one they would be joining.
The unfairness of this world was clearly depicted in the fact that although injustice by girls was not tolerated, the boys’ wills were allowed to prevail.
The members of group 4 were as follows.
Leader: Hiyama Youko
As her name suggested, she was a bright and energetic athletic girl. Her smile was so cute that it improved the mood of those who saw it as well.
She was a little taller than Yuu, in the low 170 cm range. Sporting a short bob haircut and a slender figure, she had cool air around her. She got acquainted with Yuu when they came to observe the basketball club.
Aki Kazumi
With her hair neatly braided into one, she gave off a timid impression, but upon closer inspection, she was a beautiful girl with kind, droopy eyes. Her reservedness was so liberal arts students-like, but she seemed to have been a member of a sports club in middle school as well, and she sported a well-toned, stylish figure.
She was about the same height as Yuu. She got acquainted with Yuu when they came to observe the basketball club and ever since she ended up being pushed down by him during the mini-game, it was obvious that she had been strongly attracted to him.
Satou Risa
Ukawa Miyoko
Both of them seemed to be in the volleyball clubs at both middle and high schools, and were over 180 cm tall.
Furthermore, looking at the fact that they were the first to rush to Rei at the social event held in April, it was to assume that they were big fans of Rei.
The two, whom Yuu secretly called the left-right duo, both had very short hair, so short that they could be mistaken for boys, and their faces were also somewhat similar.
Contrary to Rei’s expectation, in which he thought they would be scary due to their height difference of over 20 cm, their personality was unexpectedly gentle, and their ladylike attitude, such as when they kept in check their classmates who were trying to force their way toward him during the social event, had left a good impression on him.
Even now, they were kneeling down on one knee in front of Rei and bowing their heads, saying, 「Higashino-kun, the two of us will escort you, so please treat us favorably.」
They looked like female knights pledging their loyalty to the prince.
Maegashira Yuma
Gotou Mashiro
Yuu remembered exchanging some words with them during the social event held in April, but his impression of them was faint.
When they joined their group, both of them were so surprised that they couldn’t let out even a single word.
Most likely, they had no immunity toward boys.
In terms of appearance, Yuma had long hair that reached halfway down her back, simply tied into one, and a short stature. She was probably 150 cm tall, give or take. Sporting a childish face, she didn’t look like a high school student, a loli school student, which was rare in this world, so to speak.
Mashiro was about the same height as Rei, so she was about 160 cm tall and chubby (on a level Yuu deemed acceptable as a man). Her hair was shoulder-length and tied up on the left side with a hair elastic, which was adorable as it looked as if it was jumping about.
Her skin, which was as fair as her name suggested, and large breasts left a strong impression on Yuu.
「Hiyama-san, Aki-san, Satou-san, Ukawa-san, Maegashira-san, and Gotou-san. Please take care of me today.」
「P, please take care… of me.」
Yuu greeted them, properly looking at them in the face and calling out their names one by one.
Although he was a bit intimidated, perhaps the girls had left a better impression than he expected, Rei continued to show a smile on his face.
「Yes! Let’s enjoy ourselves today!」
「Y, yes… I will be, in your care…」
For some reason, the left-right duo was moved by Rei’s smile and made a deep 90 degrees bow from an upright position.
Yuma and Mashiro also tried to return the greeting, but fumbled on their words, saying something like 「I, I, all be in your care」.
It has only just begun, so all we need to do is to get to know each other better from now on; so Yuu thought.
Thanks For The Chapter!!!
