Volume 1 Chapter 1 Part 4
Then a small ring of light began to shine in the air, and several rays drew a simple pattern.
「A Crest….. 」
Siluca turned to the front and stared at the Crest that the young man invoked.
No matter how you look at it, it doesn’t seem to look like something that would have much power to it.
Still, no matter how small or weak it was, a Crest was still a Crest. It has the power to suppress chaos, and it bestows its owner with divine protection and blessings. As long as he has a Crest, his status is that of a Lord
「Are you a part of the Alliance? 」
Looking at the young man’s Crest, the soldier with the spear asked him that, even though he was still slightly overwhelmed.
「No, I do not belong to any Union or Alliance. 」
The young man answered with dignity, which only confirmed that he was a Lord with no actual power behind him.
「What are we going to do, Commander? 」
With a pale expression, one of the soldiers called out to the man with a spear.
Other soldiers were carrying nothing more but crude-looking swords.
「What do you mean what are we going to do? We have 10 of us here, and there is only three of them there! 」
「But they also have a Lord and a Mage on their side! 」
「I heard they can deal with 10 or even 100 people by themselves! 」

Another soldier called out.
「So what if they have a Lord and a Mage among them?! It is just a brat, a little girl and a servant! 」
The soldier that was apparently in command of the others yelled at his subordinates.
「If I perform my duty here well enough, the Lord promised to grant me my own Crest! As long as I have that, I will finally have my own title and be given a territory! In the great war that is about to begin, becoming a Lord myself will no longer be just a dream that is out of my reach as long as I continue to accumulate military achievements! 」
「So you are going to attack innocent people if it means that you will be given a Crest for it and your other achievements? A Crest is something that is supposed to protect the people from Chaos, not something to be used for personal gain, is it not? It is precisely because of the foolish people like you who have no will and drive to obtain their Crests through legitimate means that the needless fighting still continues! 」
Listening to the men’s conversation, the youth let out a roar of anger at the foolishness that he could not stand any longer and drew the sword from his waist.
Siluca snorted involuntarily and looked back at the young man.
His tone was needlessly theatrical, and the words that he spoke were beyond naïve.
However, in her opinion, that was the true form of what a Lord should be: someone who uses his Crest to protect the world from Chaos and saves the lives of innocent people.
That was the original reason why the Mages of old were making contracts with the Lords and spared no efforts in helping them in the first place.
However, the current Lords have all but forgotten their mission and only care about competing with each other for honor and power, territory and status. Siluca wanted to stay at the Magic University precisely because she didn’t want to be stuck serving such a Lord for the rest of her life.
The young man before her was not very tall, nor did he had a particularly strong physique. His weapon also looked like it has definitely seen better days. When she looked closer at the white horse that the man rode on, she saw that it was quite old and had bad coat.
But even so, Siluca thought that this young man might just have the most important qualities needed from a Lord.
「Retreat now! If you don’t retreat, I will show you no mercy! 」
A young man brandished his sword forward as he stared at the soldiers menacingly.
「What the hell is wrong with that kid!? 」
However, it seemed to have the opposite effect to what the young man intended, and the men did not retreat in the slightest.
「Lady Siluca. 」
Irvin whispered into Siluca’s ear.
「If the situation grows too dangerous, I am going to help him. But until then, it would be best to leave it entirely up to him. 」
「Are you sure about that? 」
「Yes. 」
Siluca nodded quietly.
「I want to see how strong that person is as well. 」
Then she turned her gaze back to the young man while Irvin stood beside Siluca while assuming a relaxed posture. However, even though he might have seem relaxed, he could still immediately jump into action if only the situation would demand that of him.
And if he does need to get serious, he could kill all of these 10 soldiers in an instant if he wanted. But as far as the soldiers were concerned, he was no ne they needed to afraid of. In their eyes, he was not a Lord and not a Mage, but just an ordinary servant.
In the meantime, the young man raised his sword and once again raised the hand with his Crest on it into the air. It gave off a bright light and then endowed the weapon that he was holding in his other hand with its power. This was one of the manifestations of the Crest’s powers called the Divine Grace.
As the young man was still holding his hand with the Crest held high, and it began to emit a pure white glow for the second time. When the Crest shined again, this time it created its mirror pattern on the young man’s chest before sinking into it.
This time, he used his Crest in order to strengthen his own physical abilities.
And then, the young man set out forward on his own without any hesitation.
As he charged into his opponent’s midst and he swung his sword at his opponent’s weapon, shattering it and causing the one holding it to let go of the remains.
「Shit! 」
The commander of the soldiers turned red in the face, threw down his spear, and drew his sword own sword. Meanwhile, the young man is smashing the swords of another two soldiers into little pieces.
It was only natural that the blunt blade would break if the sword imbued with the power of the Crest would come into contact with it. It looked like rather than killing the soldiers before him, the young man’s intention was to break their weapons in order to render them completely unable to fight.
Seeing that, Siluca snorted once again.
Young man was doing his best ti fight hard, but he was still outnumbered by his opponents, so it was a given that he was going to be surrounded.
Two of the soldiers slashed at him from behind. The young man sensed it at the last minute and turned around to block one of the slashes with his shield and the other with his right gauntlet.
But on the right side, the sharpened blade slipped right past his defenses, and the young man was cut shallowly on his arm. Gritting his teeth in pain, the young man slams one of the soldiers on the head with his shield, while the other received the hilt of his sword right into his jaw.
After receiving such strong blows, the two soldiers fell unconscious with their eyes rolling all the way to the back of their heads, leaving only the whites of their eyeballs visible.
Seeing that, the other soldiers were clearly shaken.
The soldiers whose swords had been broken into pieces threw them away and began to run away. The soldier who was acting as their commander yelled at them to stop this foolishness at once and detain the young man already, but they were no longer willing to comply with his orders.
Getting even redder at the face, the commander glared at the young man.
「Keep in mind what will happen to those who oppose our Lord! All the neighboring Lords will start moving to get you! 」
When the soldier said so, he ordered the remaining soldiers carry their fallen comrades on their shoulders and led them towards the narrow forest road.
「What do you think about him? 」
Siluca whispered to Irvin.
「He is a far cry from what I would call a good swordsman, but he has some good muscles on him, so if he trains them, he will definitely grow stronger. 」
「I see… 」
Siluca smiled with satisfaction.
