ch13
To compensate a king, how many fortunes would you need and how many lifetimes to fulfill it. This was already something barely fathomable but to compensate two kings, how many mountains of gold would it take.
With overwhelming evidence, this was the situation he was forced to take. He had knowingly cheated his most powerful allies out of their own heroes and because of that he would have to pay, god knows he would have to pay.
As soon as the two holographic images dispersed and the connection was cut from the other two throne rooms, the king immediately exploded.
“HOW DARE THEY! HOW FUCKING DARE THEY HUMILIATE ME!”
A trembling official, trying to calm King David, gingerly spoke.
“Your majesty, we will rectify this situation as soon as poss…”
The king’s eyes glowed a bright white and he pointed his scepter at the fool who dared speak at this humiliating moment.
“SILENCE”
A white light shot forth like a blinding arrow from the king’s scepter and hit the official directly in the mouth.
*TSSS*
His tongue was burnt away into ash in less than a second. Before he could even utter a cry or a scream of pain. The intensity had sent his entire body into shock and his eyes rolled up into the back of his head. He fell from his chair, unconscious before his body even touched the floor.
The room grew silent as everyone witnessed this and no one dared move to help this poor official for fear that they may just be next. The only sound that could be heard was the heavy breathing from the King. Even after he had injured his subordinate he was still aiming for blood and was simply waiting for the next smartass to make a peep, for that would be the excuse he needed to vent his wrath.
But alas, after the first official had been wounded, the whole group knew not to make the slightest movement or sound and they all simply waited. This silence only angered the king more though. Seeing no other speak out though the king could only vent at inanimate objects. Lifting his fist he slammed it down atop the granite table.
*Bang Crack*
A huge chunk of this solid granite table broke off while a crack snaked its way through the table like a bolt of lightning, causing it to fissure from one end of the table all the way to the opposite side.
The guards outside heard the disturbance and forced the heavy throne doors open but just as the doors opened an inch the King swore at them at the top of his lungs.
“WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU STUPID PIECES OF SHIT THINK YOU”RE DOING! YOU DARE ENTER MY THRONE ROOM UNINVITED!”
The king had filled his voice with magic power causing the air to boom like thunder. The guards were sent flying from his voice alone and their ears began to leak blood.
Just as it looked like the king was about to continue, Garn stood up and shouted.
“MY KING!”
King David was so blinded by anger that he threw another powerful roar at Garn without any hesitation.
“YOU DARE!”
How could Garn allow himself to be harmed though? Without even needing to use a magic tool, Garn willed his magic forth and erected a shield of energy over his left palm. As the energy from the king hit his palm, Garn simply gripped it and dispersed the king’s attack.
The table was shocked. Not because Garn was capable of dispersing his Majesty’s energy. they all knew he could easily do that, instead, it was because he dared to. Was this not an affront to the king’s authority. If Garn was of a lesser status the guards would have been called and Garn would have been labeled a traitor and locked away immediately but instead, the King looked at Garn with suspicion.
“Garn, what is the meaning of this?”
To his king’s question, Garn could only shake his head.
“There is no meaning to it other than I wish to protect your majesty”
The king, as well as everyone else, gazed questioningly at Garn.
“You say this protects me, protects me from what?”
“Your majesty, I’m protecting you from yourself.”
The king took a step forward.
“What the hell are you going on about?”
“Your majesty look around you. Look at the faces of those loyal to you, they’re terrified. We’ve suffered one loss but this is not the end, we can still do this but calmer heads must prevail if the human race is to survive. My King, we have to own up to our mistakes otherwise…”
Before Garn finished, King David barked at him.
“Mistakes and what mistakes? Are you referring to me?”
Garn noticed his fuck up and tried to point the conversation in another direction.
“No, um what I mean is that we all must work together…”
King David’s voice grew an octave as he interrupted Garn once more.
“NO, don’t change the subject. What do you mean by mistakes?”
“My king now isn’t really the time could we do this in private or…”
“No, you tell me right here and now what mistakes do you think I’ve committed.?”
Garn had done his best to be calm and rational up to this point but his King had pushed it a bit too far.
“The 24.”
The surrounding audience began to whisper among themselves out of curiosity.
“The 24, why is he bringing that up I wonder?”
“I don’t know but the king looked a bit rattled when he said it.”
“Shh, let us listen.”
The king was slightly startled by the sudden mention of the 24 and he regained his sense of awareness. Seeing the room filled with people who didn’t need to know what Garn was about to mention, the king quickly order.
“Everyone out, Garn you will stay and after everyone leaves we will discuss this further.”
Garn was so pissed though couldn’t remain silent any longer and spoke without reserve.
“Oh but my king you told me to speak so I shall. After all, it was you who forced me to summon all 24 heroes and it was I who told you that I wasn’t sure if it could be done and that we may have problems but you didn’t care.”
“SIlence.”
The room suddenly grew abuzz with chatter.
“What, it was the king who ordered it.”
“Not only that but it seems, Master Garn had hesitation and told his majesty but his majesty still pushed for it.”
King David yelled once more.
“I said all of you out.”
“Of course I will be silent but in the end, this whole situation was caused by you.”
Rust wanted to do anything he could to shut up his friend but it was already too late with that last sentence.
The King’s eyes widened in disbelief and everyone stood frozen on the spot. A moment later the king slammed his scepter.
*Bang*
King David pointed at Rust and ordered.
“First Commander Rust, I hereby order the immediate arrest of Master Garn.”
The room erupted into confusion. Rust swallowed grimly as he approached his friend.
Garn though was not amused in the slightest.
“On what charges am I to be arrested on, my… KIng.”
The room once more became as quiet as a feather falling before the king’s next words one more sent everyone into terrible turbulence.
“Treason.”
Everyone within the room Garn included couldn’t believe what they had just heard and everyone from the lowest position to the highest protested their king’s decision with everything they had.
“Your majesty this is too much, Garn a traitor?”
“Your majesty please show mercy, there’s no way Master Garn could.”
“My KIng, Master Garn may have spoken out of turn but him a traitor there’s no way, please be lenient.”
“How can we call him a traitor with no evidence your Majesty, please be merciful.”
“Your majesty, Master Garn has weathered many a storm and protected our great country for over 6o years. Why would he betray us now? It makes no sense. Please reconsider.”
King David didn’t expect such resistance from his followers. Yes, he knew Garn was well respected but he knew even more how much people disliked him. Garn was a very prickly type of man and came off cold and arrogant but because of his status of being the most powerful mage in the kingdom as well as all of the times Garn has saved Treia, he was a real hero and a national treasure. So even if people didn’t like his personality they solely respected his power and his heroism.
So for these important figures who were around the age of ’30s to late ’50s, many of them had grown up witnessing his acts of heroism and admired him greatly. To see their hero be labeled a traitor made absolutely no sense. Especially since it was well known that if Garn wanted a country of his own he could establish one easily or even take one by force. What need would he have to betray his home?
The king was infuriated and slammed his scepter once more.
*Bang*
“SILENCE!”
The unruly crowd began to settle but the looks they now gave their king were clearly not ones of love or respect.
(How could this be how could I have dug myself so deep. No, wait, there is a chance I can turn this whole thing around. They all know that this was my screw up but if I can drag their hero down a peg or two then I can act as though this is a teachable moment and say something along the lines of. [You see, we’re all people, we all make mistakes. I may be a king but even I have slip-ups but with hard work and your continued support, we can beat the Azirian’s together.] Yea something like that ought to return the people’s favor back to me. But how do I drag his name through the mud, think, think.)
With this moment of silence, an idea went off inside the King’s head like a flash of brilliance.
(I’ve got it. Hmph watch as I turn your hero into the piece of shit person we all are.)
The king looked at the crowd and spoke.
“I did order for the 24 to be summoned here and Garn did tell me he was hesitant and there could be a problem but I didn’t believe him. How could the most powerful mage in all of Treia not be able to summon them? I believe that Garn is hiding something and with all of you here as my witness, I will prove that he knows more than he’s saying about the incident.”
The crowd looked at one another in confusion until someone couldn’t help but shout out.
“How?”
The king smirked inwardly before saying two words.
“Mind Frey.”
