*Clank Clink Bang*
Swords clashed with clubs as Kazuki and the rest battled the goblins. Danny had recovered and had now gone on the offensive. He charged forward at the goblin his guard had just kicked away and swung down atop the goblins head.
*Slash*
*Guroar*
Danny’s blow had been too shallow and left a long gash upon the goblin’s face. The goblin swung his club in defiance and struck Danny’s sword.
*Bam*
Danny though had prepared himself this time and gripped his sword tightly, whilst also firmly planting his feet, allowing no knockbacks to occur. Still, Danny felt a large impact reverberate through the sword and into his body. The strike was a big one and left Danny’s hands slightly tingly.
Danny’s guard yelled into his ear.
“Look for an opening and aim for its weak spots. Just like us, they are vulnerable in the common places. Now don’t back down and finish it before your enemy gets back up.”
Danny took his guard’s words to heart and looked for an opening as he continued to strike down but the goblin was struggling desperately with everything it had to not be hit again. As blood ran down from the wound on the goblin’s face, it was both terrified and enraged and did everything in its power to deflect Danny’s sword with its club. Unfortunately for the goblin though, its club, although made from thick wood, could not resist for long against a metal sword with super strength behind it.
*Crack*
The club was chopped through like a tree and the momentum allowed Danny’s sword to cut diagonally through from the goblin’s shoulder to mid-torso.
The goblin gripped the sword while coughing and choking repeatedly as it gasped for air. Danny was shocked and pulled his sword from the goblin’s body, causing a jet of hot sticky blood to spray his face. The goblin continued to writhe in agony for a few more seconds but to Danny, it seemed like an eternity. Finally, with one last shallow breath, the goblin went still. It was dead.
Danny was frozen in place. The world seemed to grow silent and disappear from him. He had never even killed an insect before, let alone something like this. A swirl of emotions struck him like a hammer, guilt, fear, anger, pleasure. So many different things at once that it was hard for him to comprehend.
*Whack*
Danny felt a large impact on his back and his world returned. His guard had slapped him hard on the back, returning his senses to him.
“Boy, enough with the confusion. Even If your brain turns to shit, you still have enemies to kill.”
Danny looked at the dead goblin on the ground before switching his view to the ones still fighting. Once more he felt a large impact on his back as his guard pushed him forward.
“NO TIME FOR IDLE THOUGHT, GO!”
With the force from the push, Danny raced forward, toward the nearest goblin. Raising his sword, he started attacking without reserve.
A goblin swung his club at Shin with deadly intent but Shin’s excitement pushed out his fear. Shin easily dodged the club and appeared next to the goblin.
*Shick*
Shin stabbed the tip of his sword into the goblin’s side multiple times. With the wind element, Shin’s speed was incredible. He managed to stab the goblin 4 or 5 times before the goblin even swung a second time. Shin took a step back and ran at another goblin whilst laughing maniacally. After just going a few steps the goblin he had stabbed fell face forward, it was dead before it even touched the ground.
Kimi had been sent to the front as well but it was obvious to see that training and real combat were two different things. With a swing of her sword, she repeatedly missed due to fear. With a goblin upon her, she couldn’t help but retreat step by step. Her guard was about to scream at her and force her to fight, but then Sam stepped in front of her.
Without a care in the world, Sam swung his 5-foot two-handed sword lazily. The goblin saw this strike and snickered at its slow movement but when Sam’s blade struck, the goblin’s fate was sealed. Sam’s sword sliced through the club like paper and continued unimpeded.
*Grshuck*
The goblin’s body separated into two equal parts from the right side of its waist to its left. A pile of guts spilled out onto the ground and soaked the dirt with a vile stench. Kimi had to hold her nose or she would vomit, but Sam just looked ahead at the approaching enemies.
Besides Rust who was waiting in the background, Sam was easily the largest amongst their group. Seeing this the goblins found him to be the biggest threat, and after Sam cut a goblin in two they quickly chose to send three more at him at once.
Sam held his sword in place and waited for the goblins to come within his blade’s range when something struck Sam in the side of the head.
*Whack*
A small rock was thrown from a goblin 20 or so feet away. This did little to hurt Sam but it did take his focus away for a split second. A goblin swung with its large ape-like arms, hitting Sam directly in the ribs.
The goblin looked up at Sam and smiled, waiting for the impending scream of pain that would follow, but it never came. Sam looked down at the goblin before him. Standing at 6 foot 2 and glaring down at something not even half his height, Sam simply said one word.
“Oh.”
Sam lifted a fist and brought it down upon the goblin’s skull like a heavy boulder.
*Crunch*
The goblin’s head cracked open and exploded like a ripe melon, sending blood, bone, and brain matter in multiple directions. The other two goblins were sent into fight or flight mode and instinctively attacked Sam with everything they had. However, their timing was off and they had wasted too much time. Kimi had calmed down and lifted her hand high in the air. Her ring glowed and a blinding white light shot forth with extreme accuracy. Like a laser beam, the light went straight into the two attacking goblins’ eyes and began to burn them.
The goblins immediately dropped their clubs and gripped their faces in pain. Sam saw the opportunity and took it. With a large swing, his sword arched in the air performing a half-circle.
*Gerchick*
His blade cut the two goblins in half and they collapsed to the ground dead.
Sam didn’t know why Kimi had helped him. He felt he was in no danger whatsoever but it’s not like he would be mad because of it. With a thumbs-up, he smiled at her.
“Thanks, Kimi.”
Kimi’s cheeks went momentarily red with blush.
“N…No problem.”
Shin dashed in and killed the rock thrower while Kazuki put on a bit of a play and allowed the goblin to get a few close misses in, even allowing a goblin to graze his cheek. After that, when he thought enough time had reasonably passed for a first-timer facing off against a goblin, Kazuki swung his sword in a sharp arc and decapitated his enemy.
Asuna as well didn’t sit idly by. Sidestepping an enemy’s swing she plunged a dagger into its chest. Right as the light left the goblin’s eyes, Asuna felt something behind her.
(Blink!)
She roared that word in her mind and her body teleported a few feet behind her original position. A goblin swung at empty air before it suddenly felt a strange pain in its back. Looking down, the point of a dagger was extruding from its chest.
Asuna had teleported behind it and thrust her dagger into its back. As blood ran down the blade of her dagger and onto her hand, Asuna breathed a sigh of relief. Her guard though yelled at her.
“It ain’t finished just yet, look alive, red!”
Asuna once more grew alert and saw another goblin coming for her. Her eyes flashed with determination and she jumped toward her enemy. With her body in mid-air, the goblin found this perfect and swung with full force, planning to crush her before she landed.
(Blink!)
The goblin struck nothing but empty air as Asuna teleported passed the swing and appeared directly in front of the goblin.
*Shick*
Her dagger plunged into the goblin’s heart and only a moment later she felt the weight of the goblin on her blade as its body went completely limp.
A few minutes later and the rest of the goblins were killed. Danny had managed 2, Sam had gotten 4, Asuna 3, Shin 3, Kazuki 1and Kimi 0. Kazuki had thought it would take the rest longer to kill so he had purposefully slowed his fight, but who would have thought these first-timers would do so well. And even though Kimi didn’t kill any she did blind two, helping Sam somewhat. Even Garn was impressed by how Kimi had used her magic.
“Young Kimi, that was interesting how you used your magic just now. You focused your light and shot your opponents directly in the eyes. You just recently learned how to use one of your elements and you already have this amount of control over your light. Instead of your light going everywhere and being harmful to not only your enemies but your allies as well, you were able to focus it into individual beams. Excellent, excellent work. I’m curious though, how did you come up with this?”
Kimi flashed a bright smile.
“Well, after Kazuki showed off the other day, it made not just me but all of us rethink our powers. Because of him, I started thinking about how to make my attack stronger and it reminded me of something back on earth called a magnifying glass.”
Kimi then went on to explain her ideas and how she practiced focusing her light into a point into it developed into what it was now. Master Garn knew of this method and was just curious as to how she came to this by herself but the other mages hadn’t thought to try that. Of course, none of them had the element of light either so using her method would be too difficult and time consuming for them. Still, they admired Kimi’s earnestness and outside the box thinking.
While Kimi was describing her method joyfully, Kazuki was annoyed as he could see eyes starting to focus on him and evaluate his capabilities.
(Shit, why did she have to mention me. Dammit, Kimi. At least it’s easily explainable with science.)
Garn eyed Kazuki and thought after thought began to flood his head as he thought about Kazuki’s lies and hidden behaviors.
(Is the boy simple, or not. He acts aloof and stupid on the surface and should be easy to see through, but for some reason, something just doesn’t sit well with me. He just arrived in this world and before getting the basics of magic down, he’s already improvising and coming up with ways to improve his power and then giving the others a few clues on it as well. Does he have a real understanding of magic or is it just lucky guesses? No, this boy…)
Garn’s thoughts were interrupted by a firm slap on the back from Rust.
“Hahaha, they did well, Garn. Shall we head to the next nest, there’s another one about a half-mile in that direction.”
Garn swung his staff, nearly striking Rust in the face.
“Dammit, Rust! Must you touch me at any and all opportunity, you damn molester!”
Rust laughed some more before he said.
“Haha, are we going or not?”
Garn grumbled under his breath.
“Hmph, asshole.”
Rust smiled.
“Huh, did you say something?”
Garn started walking ahead before he stopped and turned around.
“Well, are you going to lead the way, or not? The summoned ones have training to do.”
